While it may be true that there are far worse things he could've said instead, it still doesn't mean he HAD to use that word, either. Now that that's out of the way, let's get back on topic.

Well, there wasn't any other word that could sum the whole thing up accurately, ignorant had to be used.
This thread is pointless, we don't need any change with Irealand and the U.K, it's good as it is.

What do you call someone whose knowledge seems to be fully based on watching Braveheart? The word ignorant is the most precise word that could be found. Offensive truth is still truth and it was Coltess own fault of not informing himself or really coming up with good idea on the subject.
Bringing up William Wallace is funny in that it was a Scottish King, James VI, King of Scots (that'd be the Scottish) was the one who became king of England also and unified the crown. So it's not like the English took Scotland from them, but rather the reverse. The countries still remained rather separate till the Act of the union in 1707, but its because of James VI that the union exists. So yeah.

Saying "Coltess, you know very little about this subject" may be the same as saying "Coltess, you are ignorant", but it's a less offensive way of saying it. It's like choosing to say "Leave me alone" instead of (and I apologize for expressing myself this way) "Fuck off". Again, please, back on topic.

I must disagree with you, "Leave me alone" to "fuck off" is much worse and a huge jump compared to "you know little of the subject" to "you are ignorant"
and why would Ireland join the UK?

No, the equivalent would be to say "Coltess, you are retarded" or "You fucking spaz".
