I felt this should be discussed, as I am NOT a fan of dissing amongst artists.

First off the video can be watched here: http://youtu.be/wrPNTFacDvA

Now, this was recorded during a rehearsal for Madonna's MDNA World Tour. The mash up features the entire song of Express Yourself, and short excerpts of Lady Gaga's Born This Way near the end, mixed in with parts of Express Yourself that are obviously similar.

What truly bothers me is at the very end, when Madonna sings an excerpt from her song She's Not Me, an obvious attack on Lady Gaga.

As a fan of both artists, I for one find this to be childish and highly disrespectful. In seeing this, I also find Madonna to be seriously full of herself, as if she feels she is so great that anything similar to her work must be a copy. I dare say that after seeing this video, I lost a bit of respect for her.

If Madonna was really concerned with the validity of Gaga's music she should've spoken with the singer personally, eventually settling the issue. Instead, she decides to make a mockery of Lady Gaga, a very immature choice of action, in my most honest opinion.

Well, what do you guys think? Was Madonna in the wrong? Do you feel Lady Gaga deserved it?

The quality of that video sucked. Is She's Not Me really an attack on Lady Gaga? Or are you just speculating? I think attacks are uncalled for, however, the mashup of two popular singles, showing their similarities, I think is cheeky and fun, and will probably only help both of their careers with the publicity it is going to generate.

Madonna takes herself too seriously even though it's probably just business. You saw the Superbowl thing? "I'm sixty and I know it!"

I appreciated her Superbowl show. I think she's doing great for her age and I wouldn't put her down. She looks great too, but sometimes I am scared to look at her arms.

Wow, that was totally disrespectful and childish and immature and couldn't possibly have been a singer just having a bit of fun.

Deserved what? Deserved to be covered by one of the biggest most successful artists of all time? I'd be honoured.

Those arms... How vile.

But yes she does look alright for her age.

Considering that Madonna stated in an interview that she feels Born This Way is reductive, I highly doubt she was just having fun.

This seems like a dis, and yes I do feel it is immature.

As you can see, "she's not me" is the only part of the sing she sung, which would usually seem a little slim for a mash up, don't you think?

I appreciate that she is still doing it in her fifty-something but I once thought that she shouldn't act like she's still twenty. Ozzy Osbourne is 63, one of my greatest favorites, but he basically just stands still in his gigs (leaning to the mike stick) and sometimes throws a bucket of water to the audience as an apex. So in that sense Madonna is still in a good shape when she can still perform her coreographies but she's ten years younger and hasn't gone through the same things Ozzy has. Ozzy > Madonna

Then she was dissing her. What does it matter? That's what Lady Gaga gets for releasing a mediocre single that was far too similar to an artist she was already accused of ripping off in the first place.

Quite similar to claims early in Madonna's career that she bore an image and style all too similar to Marilyn Monroe, who happens to be Madonna's inspiration.

Unlike Madonna, obviously, I took the time to compare both songs, and they're very much different. They have two different time signatures, different pitches, and the styles of music belong to two different genres. The messages in the songs are also very different, one focuses on women empowerment while the other focuses on lgbt acceptance. The only similarity is the melody of one of the bridges in Madonna's song, and melody to the chorus of Lady Gaga's, which bares a similarity of only three notes.

To say, I take this seriously because I am an aspiring composer. Music means a great deal to me, so when an issue like this occurs, it irks the hell out of me, and I call attention to it.

The songs are similar. If you're a musician it should be even more obvious.

I don't even see the issue. Even if Madonna's intent was as malicious as humanly possible, who cares? It's pop music. I'm sure Lady Gaga isn't losing sleep over this.

This is not about "pop music," but respecting one's artistry.

Yes, they are similar, but its not a splitting image. Madonna needs to get off her high horse.

And to say, from seeing Lady Gaga's emotional crappiness from her vlogs and interviews, she's probably in a corner eating ice cream as we speak. Yes, I said it 'cause it's funny.

I always thought that bands covered other people's music out of respect.

But then again, sometimes it is out of mockery.

In the end, who cares? Who is actually getting butt hurt over this?

That arm pic is from like 5 years ago, she doesn't work out like crazy anymore so her arms don't look that bad anymore.

(Few months ago)

I LOVEEEE Madonna and I know what she has done.
She knows people will talk about this and it will be on all the gossip shows etc. She is a business woman.
We are on an MK site are discussing it for crying out loud so It's safe to say it worked.

I also love Gaga but I despise her crazy, immature "monster" fans (altho most are OK).
During the last album release they flooded Madonna forums spreading their wish for Madonna to die and even got "R.I.P Madonna" trending on Twitter.
Gaga should be addressing that as she is supposed to stand for equality and loving everyone etc.

They should duet...

Lady GaGa has always been similar to Madonna in many aspects, and I say that as a fan of both. Lady GaGa is today what Madonna was then, outragous, crossing boundaries and becoming popular on it as an artist and a singer. They both have each their unique qualities and differences, but they definately have alot in common as well.

That said, this video is ridiculous in so many ways. Madonna is behaving incredibly childish by doing a stunt like this which might turn fans of both of them against her. Madonna should take the likeness between her and Lady GaGa as flatter. As they say, impersonation is the greatest form of flattery.

Hopefully they fight it out and kill each other, and the world is a better place to live. Calling the music they perform artistry means that you have fairly low standards for art. It's just stupid celebrity garbage anyway. Besides they both rip off other artists all the time. I've seen clips of Madonna playing Pantera riffs, and Lady Gaga is basically Marilyn Mansion with a new paint job.

I'm sorry that you went all the way to this thread just to diss Madonna and Lady GaGa, only to be laughed at for a minor spelling error, but this is just hilarious! XD

Madonna is an amazing singer, songwriter and dancer.

Lady Gaga is an amazing singer, songwriter and pianist.

Marilyn Manson is an amazing singer, songwriter, and composer.

I can see you deny their talent because of their overwhelming celebrity and controversy. However, they possess skills people would kill for. They're each very grand in their own right. They are artists.

I created this thread to discuss the issue from a musical point of view. I could care less about gossip and feud.

With that said, Madonna is a legendary artist and performer who will die with her title as Queen of Pop; she has no reason to attack anyone, let alone a singer who idolizes her.

Hold the phone: Madonna is a terrible singer. Seriously, vocally GaGa blows her out of the water.

Madonna is good at producing pop songs. She's good at noticing a trend when it's becoming huge and milking it until something (or someone) else comes along she can latch onto for relevancy. She's an effective business woman who's savvy nature and knack for survival in the industry has kept her a household name even to this day (despite the fact that she doesn't really appeal to the youth of today, in my opinion). She's not the nicest to her fans and comes across as a bit pretentious but none the less she's amassed a following over the years and has had a career that one would have to be blind or stupid to ignore.

GaGa? She's an amalgamation of Grace Jones, David Bowie, Roisin Murphy, Marilyn Manson and Madonna in terms of style and theatricality, but she's a talented pianist and singer who's talent can help her carry it off. She's young, but already she's amassed a huge following as well due to the fact she appeals to the insecure youth of today, as well as catering to the fashion scene and gay community for her elaborate outfits and dedicated work in raising LGBT awareness. She's edgy to a generation of people who weren't around to remember "Slave to the Rythym" or "Life on Mars".

Did Madonna diss her? Probably. But if I was Madonna, I'd understand why. She's old news in comparisson to GaGa, she's struggling to stay relevant in a society where the young and bizzare are celebrated. It's a crown she wore years ago that she should just hand over before she makes a total carricature of herself making diss attempts like this. She should be flattered, and if she had any sense, maybe even attempt a collaboration with GaGa to raise her profile that bit further.

I still fail to see anything wrong with Madonna's actions. I see other musical acts cover other artists all of the time. Lady Gaga apparently recently tweeted "Madonna is a cunt." If I could give a shit about either celebrity, I'd say Lady Gaga is the one who is out of line in this exchange.

I don't think one would simply cover of a song they find reductive (the actual word Madonna used to describe Born This Way) in comparison to theirs.

Furthermore, the bit about Gaga calling Madonna a contact is simply a rumor regarding a barcode on her page, which supposedly says that.
