Yes, it's time for another one of these topics.
I see several old ones, but nothing recent.
I was thinking about this,
and it's totally unique among my pastimes for one reason:
If I were inclined, I could get back *more* money than I've put into it-
and that's having used the cards.
Compare that to a video game,
which loses at least 50% of its value the second you open it,
whether you play it or not.
Except for some *very* rare cases,
you're never going to sell a game for more than you spent on it-
especially a used one.
This makes Magic: the Gathering the best investment I've ever made with my money.
I spent $100 on a Black Lotus over 15 years ago-
it's now worth $500-$2000 on eBay.
Not too shabby
Also- if any of you play one of the online, free versions,
I'd love to play a game or two via magic-league.com
or another, similar site.
It's still fun after all these years,
it's just a major headache keeping up with all the new cards.
FWIW- if you quit playing because you felt the cards were getting crappier
(as I did years ago), you might want to check out some of the newer sets.
Cards like Redirect, Haunting Echoes, Baneslayer Angel, Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, and Blightsteel Colossus are pretty freaking insane.
Blue is my favorite color *by far*,
but I play all colors except Red (and even there I use a card or two).
Kabal20, I see you have a history with M:tG, as well.
Have any of you guys ever been tempted to get back into playing?
It's as fun as it always was

I play the WoW TCG. Does that count?
I used to play Magic. I think I quit around Odyssey. I really disliked Mirrodin and all of the new abilities and equips. I hate blue, just because it's so annoying to be so controlled. Counter spell is the most broken card in the game (save Black Lotus, haha).
My favourite colour is probably white. I'm lame and just like to send out creatures, and I love using Angels. I had a pretty cool Angel deck (mixed with blue) because you know blue is so fucking broken it's dumb.

No- but you definitely get some geek points, nonetheless
And Erik- I never played Blue for total control-
the only counterspell I used frequently was/is Mana Drain,
one of the most "broken" cards ever printed.
Force of Will is a necessary evil if you're in a tourney,
but I don't play with them otherwise.
The main reason I use Blue
is stealing other players' creatures (Control Magic)
or stealing their spells (Redirect, Twincast).

Black Lotus = The One Above All.
Lol, I remember playing Magic five years ago, it was so fun. When we got PS+ for a month I downloaded the game, there are only preset decks but man, I had some really intense matches. I want to buy the 2012 version but haven't been able to buy a PSN card.

Magic the Gathering is the same like Yu-Gi-Oh, right?
Just kidding, I am well aware what MtG is. ;P
I'm not a collector myself, but I have a couple of friends who enjoy playing and spending their money on it. It is quite an interesting hobby, but as all hobbies (or most of them anyways), it is also quite an expensive hobby. But as long they enjoy it and can afford it, I see nothing wrong with it. They have fun with MtG, playing with them, goes to tournaments etc etc.
And it has spawned many clones, such as Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, WoW trading cards, and there's even one with Mortal Kombat. Or actually, two - the old series and a newer series which also includes a Street Fighter set and a Tekken set, I believe. Quite cool.
Me, I just like to look at the pretty artwork made on them. ^^

I just got back into Magic this year after a several year hiatus. And I'm glad I've come back. I play equally amongst green, white and blue with an occasional red or black thrown in.
I do agree that it is hard to keep up with all the cards as it seems that Wizards keeps pumping deck after deck, but overall a great game.

Growing up, MTG was not as popular in my part of town (unlike Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon), so when my uncle first introduced the game to me and my brothers, we were the only ones playing it. Even then, I really didn't get a real grasp of the game, since the only people I had to reference and collaborate with about the game was me and my brothers. However, being ignorant didn't stop us from buying cards and running our own little "House" tournaments with us and our cousins. It wasn't until the game came out for Xbox 360 did I finally, TRULY understand the rules of the game, and thus truly enjoy playing it.
With that being said, I currently own over 1200 cards, ranging from cards released back in 2000/2002 to 2011. It's sad though because right now they're just collecting dust due to the fact that I don't have anybody local enough to play with. I also own the 2012 version on PS3, so feel free to add me and play me online if you have it as well.
My favorite color is Black, and I enjoy running and all black deck! I love everything the Black theme represents in MTG: from creature and hand destruction, to intimidate, to sacrificing life points for a greater effect, to bringing creatures back to life or to your hand, everything! My favorite type of black cards are the rats, especially the Nezumi. It's funny too considering that not only is black my favorite color in general, but my Chinese Zodiac is the Rat! lol

You would almost certainly hate my decks then,
as nothing gives me greater satisfaction
than defeating an opponent with their own resources.
It's a play style that developed in retaliation to all the Red Burn I dealt with in my early days (Red being most of my friends' chosen color).
And I haven't gotten the "official" online version,
as that requires starting from scratch, card wise,
and I don't want to start up a collection of fake cards
in addition to the real ones.
However, I am interested in trying one of the free online versions,
as those don't require any money at all to build whatever deck you want.
My brother used to play this game all the time with another friend of his. I don't remember exactly how or why he stopped but this was when he was in eighth grade and I had to be about seven.
A few years later we host a garage sale and I see my brother's binder of Magic cards being sold off and forever reason I was not happy about it. I really digged the art they had on the cards and wanted to see why my brother was interested in playing that game.
Unfortunately, I grew up during the time when Pokemon debuted... No one had even heard of Magic where I'm at unless they're my brother's age.
Shameful to be honest.

Yeah, a lot of the art really is amazing-
from the abstract to the photo-real.
It was probably unwise of your brother to sell them like that-
if he still had them now, I'm certain he would have cards worth more
than he got for the entire binder back then.
I'm honestly kind of shocked it's continued to increase in value for over 15 years.
I assumed it would die off
and the cards would be no more valuable than Garbage Pail Kids,
but that has yet to happen.
My collection is *still* worth over $5000
