Okay, so after watching a whole bunch of new T.V. shows and movies, I've realised that most of the things we portray in the media, even shows that brag about "being a realistic take on things" are plagued with stupid stereotypes.

Before you satisfy your urge to post "DUH" or "What do you expect?" hear me out.

Most shows, mostly concerning teens to young adults, claim to have a realistic take on that particular point in peoples lives, only all I can see are absurd stereotypes that are far from true.

At least I think.

Here are a few things that have been drastically different in my life, and myabe I'm really weird, but I thought it was like this everywhere.

1: You get bullied or a hard time for being gay

Not even close. It was always cool to be gay. I know guys that would say they were bi just to get more friends.

2: Freaks are lame. You're into something different, you're out.

Nope. It's cool to be "Not normal" and "Weird". I didn't get along with a lot of people because I didn't have any "weird" or "not normal" things to talk about in my life.

3: Nerd, Star Wars is for pussies!!

Far from close. It's waaay cool to be a nerd, and to say things like, "I'm such a nerd!!". Not to mention, retro shit is cool, if you like the Original Trilogy, you're super awesome.

4: Popular. Lame.

Most of the time, the "Cheerleaders" and "Band Geeks" can get along.

5: Poor people. Rich people.

Hipster: Dressing in shitty clothes and complaining about how poor you are, while carrying the iPad your parents got you for getting a C+.

Yes, they're trying to impersonate us now, meaning, authentic or not, poor is in.

6: In College, you party all day, get drunk, have sex, and fail.

... Do you know how hard it is to make friends in college right now? No one is social, it's get in, do your work, get out. No sex, no parties. At least not on anybody elses time but their own.

And probably a whole ton more I'n not thinking of.

I just never see things like Hipsters shown on a T.V. show. THAT'S what's going on right now, but instead we're stuck in stereotypes from the 50's.

Hell, you could make a show JUST as interesting if it were about what REALLY goes down.

Anyway, these are just things from my life. Am I waaay wrong, or does this happen to anyone else.

Also, these are just very basic subjects I see on T.V. feel free to post anything else, maybe even moe in-depth, that annoys you.

Jacky Boy, you'd be surprised at just how new these developments in social structure are. That said, the people running film companies and pretty much all entertainment are old timers. Even if they're only 45, they wouldn't really know just how much shit has changed. Remarkably for the better.

New?

I started High School like 4 years ago.

And I, for one, do understand that all of the producers behind things don't know jack shit, but you'd think that they would adapt, simply to make shows about High School that High School students can relate to, and not, say, grown women.

More money that way, ya know? Higher ratings, for sure.

It was not always cool to be gay and I got a ton of shit for it and lost a bunch of friends over it and I'm 21, not much older than most of the people here. Many people might have accepted me, but a fairly large amount didn't.

Me, yes.

If you're implying that I wouldn't know, my best friend, cousin, and brother are all gay (actually my bother is bisexual.)

Okay, this is what I'm talking about.

I guess I come from a strange place or something, but not even my Uncle caught shit for being gay, and he admit when he reached High School that he was Gay all through Catholic School.

Yep. New. I started high school 7 years ago and the stuff your describing didn't start happening until I was just about ready to bail.

2007 to be exact, when suddenly every girl on the planet was "bi".

In all fairness, using a lie like that will only gain you my resentment and a little bad karma. Believe in the karma!

Sadly, most stereotypes proves to be true. There's a reason the stereotypes exists... they are based on how it is in the real world, though some of them are somewhat exaggerated.

I can say that for your first point - that actually happened to me. I was bullied and even assaulted on the street, just for that one reason: I am gay.

Far from everyone thinks it is cool. Sad, but true.

Okay, so after reading everyones comments, I can safely assume that where I come from, being gay is generally accepted, and I guess my town was a little further ahead, seeing as these things have been happening for a while.

So, this thread shall be dying soon...

Was he out at Catholic school? Because if he wasn't I don't see the relevance. I just don't see a Catholic school not having any type of complaint, qualm or other issue with someone being openly gay and them not caring one bit.

Also, even the most liberal of places have people who promote homophobia, racism, sexism etc.

I'd also like to note that homosexuality was illegal in many parts of the United States several decades ago, it wasn't until Lawrence V. Texas (2003) Supreme court case that homosexuality was decriminalized nationwide, that should be a good indication of the political and social climate for gays. We may have made progress, but the assertion that we've always been accepted is not true.

I'm not saying that. I know you haven't.

I'm saying that around these parts, the bigger problem is Racism, and that being gay has been generally accepted for quite some time. Like I already stated.

And what I meant by Catholic school, was that all of his friends in HS with him were also friends with him in CS, and that didn't change their views on him at all.

Now please, let it die.

That's horrible to hear.

People acting as if these things don't happen would be the more accurate stereotype.

Alight, I am just as much against Homophobia as I am Racism, and many other hateful views towards things, and like I have already stated, I know these things happen, but clearly not as often where I live.

This thread isn't going anywhere, and I didn't like whee it was heading starting with the first comment, I am now going to ask mod to close this.
