Music/Movie remakes...or Johnny Cash kicks ass (rant)
Is it just me, or has there been a massive influx of remakes lately? It seems there's no creativity left in the industry, nor respect for original work. Some say remakes are a tribute to original work, but the recent presentation contradicts that, and it does notihng but bastardize the original
Just saw Jessica Simpson's video for the "Take my Breath Away" remake, and I've finally gotten to the point where it's making me physically ill to watch crap like this. Joss Stone DEBUTED with a remake of the White Stripes' "Fell In Love With a Girl", and called it "Fell In Love With A Boy". Geez, that's pretty sad...the original song is ...maybe...a year old (?)
Don't even get me started on these multi-million-dollar redundancies called movie remakes.
There are hundreds and hundreds of great musician/directors/filmmakers/writers who have great material, and they're struggling just to get a foot in the door, but they can't, 'cuz we have to make room for this crap
The ONLY person I can credit for remakes is Johnny Cash. Some may call me a hypocrite in this sense, but when you have this as a collection of albums, you can do whatever the fuck you want. He's PROVEN to be a true songwriter/singer, and has the records to back it up...

Agreed. Although, I enjoy live or joke covers of songs every once and a while. I love when Tenacious D covers anything. I like their live version of Heaven On Their Minds better than the original.
EDIT - forgot about Dillinger Escape Plan's cover of Aphex's Come To Daddy. That song wails.

I like the remakes of "Gin and Juice"(If anyone can tell me who really did the remake I will be their friend forever. I have heard Phish,Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney,Cledus T. Judd. Who really did it?) and "Boyz In The Hood" by Dynamite Hack.
It's Phish. And, yes, that cover of Boyz in the Hood is awesome.

....And this is why I like independant filmakers...Anyway, I definatly understand where you're coming from. I thought of driving my car into on coming traffic when I heard that Jessica Simpson covered Cash. But there are some bands out there that when when and where to cover other songs. One of the best out now doing this is Pearl Jam. I know that sounds a bit bias, but their covers of "Baba O'Riley" (originally by The Who) and "Rockin in the Free World" (originally by Neil Young) are really good. And one of the reason these covers are good is because they originally were done at live shows and weren't meant to be put on an album. They had such a good following that they would play at taped shows, and the rest is history. Do what I do, fill up the car with CDs and try to avoid the radio as much as humanly possible.

Ironically enough, it was Cash himself who did a (in MY opinion) TERRIBLE cover of Nine Inch Nail's "Hurt".

I will agree with all that was said. I don't have the attention span to read your whole shpeel Shingo, but Johnny Cash kicks ass, and I trust you know what you're talking about.
There will always be covers I like, and when you're an established artist, who's proven yourself capable of being creative enough to write your own solid stuff, I think it's perfectly fine to want to cover other songs that you have always really enjoyed.
Yes, Tenacious D does awesome covers. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are shitty, but they do pick good songs to cover, most of the time. I'm a fan of Pearl Jam, so anything they do is good.
Soundgarden does a really pants-blowing cover of Johnny Cash's Rusty Cage. It makes me want to do stuff.
And for the record, I like most Bob Marley covers. Okay, they aren't Bob Marley, but when it's Sublime, or Clapton or someone doing it, it keeps his spirit alive.
