How long did it take before there was a thread about a fucking cartoon dog's death? About some actor from a shitty film series? I get that shit's a little more relevant in pop-culture, but are you guys seriously telling me that nobody presently visiting MKO gave a second thought to bring up how the first democratically elected politician in South Africa who basically fought against apartheid and gave up almost 30 years of his life to do it in prison and at least try to see how it affected everyone? [/rant]
I remember when I was a kid, I thought he was a big deal, even before I had learnt that before being elected, he'd been behind bars for several decades. I was 10 when that happened. He was basically the Martin Luther King Jr of South Africa, except he went from a political prisoner to a President. Who would've thought that?
This guy was a true leader, an inspiration to so many who want to change society for the better. Sure, he wasn't perfect, as before he was arrested, he did begin to promote violence, but being non-violent for decades before that did nothing, and he believed that the persecuted had the right to defend themselves from unlawful and oppressive treatment, especially on their own soil. He eventually renounced violence, and achieved unity for South Africa. He was a revolutionary for our time, and there most likely won't ever be another guy like him. The world lost a great man on Thursday, and he will be missed by the billions of lives he touched.
It's kind of funny, on Wednesday, my gal had asked me to watch a documentary about him on Thursday, as she had some free tickets to attend. The day we go to watch it, he passed... I'll remember that day for as long as I'll live. Where were you when you heard the news? What were you doing when you found out?

You are right, this def should have been brought up sooner. If you look on the bright side, 95 years is an amazing life. and the things he has done in that life were amazing as well. My facts on him may be a little off, but while he was imprisoned, he learned the language of those he was fighting against because he said that you can speak to anyone, but to speak to someone in their language has a lot more impact.

I was also watching this interview with Charles Barkley, and he brought up a great point. He basically said that all the bad things that people done to him, and he immediately forgave everyone. 99.9% of us would have hate in us for an entire lifetime. It would even be understandable. But not Madiba.

Rest in Peace.

I checked. Took one day for Paul Walker and Brian Griffin, two for Nelson Mandela. Which is valid. Fighting apartheid is great and all, but pales in comparison to racing Vin Diesel.

I was going to make a thread about that sad event. But I was afraid people was going to mock me for it because some people out there considered Mandela a terrorist. R.I.P. Mandela

You're right. Heck, those users at the Yahoo website reacted to this sad event in the most despicable manner. I'm African-American myself so it really disgusts me the most.

The so-called terrorist acts that he was accused of were perpetrated by his ex-wife. Not even him.

Laughed so hard, but it's true.

Let's be honest, most people don't give a shit about someone dying unless it's a celebrity (real or ficticious).

It's called Yahoo for a reason, after all.

RIP, Nelson Mandela, you will forever be missed.

Well that's because Yahoo tends to have articles be about pointless crap that the writers think is actually newsworthy. News stations where I'm at are still reporting about the things this man did as well as how others are reacting to this, and the first thing I see on Yahoo after pulling it up is an article about the "perfect women" by combining celebrities together.

Yeah, that's totally something I really need to care about. Kinda sad to be honest that useless crap is shunning people like Mandela down. He'll rest in peace, and he'll be spread throughout the world for doing the great things he did.

Yeah, this was funny. smile
Glad to see that there are so many people here who do understand how important Nelson Mandela was. I'd take everyone in this thread over the hundreds who think Nelson Mandela was a terrorist monster.

What he fought for was true and just.

How he fought for it, was not. This leaves me with mixed opinions on the man.

I may have a stronger opinion on this than most, because I live in Northern Ireland. A country with terrorists (The IRA) who prefer to describe themselves as freedom fighters. The Glorification of Sin Fein/IRA is something that I see day to day, Murals painted on walls, there a a plaque not far from my house commemorating a man who committed "The Shankill bombing" (killing himself in the process along with 11 other innocents).

I understand why people want a United Ireland, though I don't want it myself (for economical reasons) but I do not understand how people can justify terrorism and murder, even if you agree with the cause.

This I am not much into saying R.I.P about a man who commited murder, as if there ever is a united Ireland I will see similar commemorations for people who have spilled innocent blood for its cause.

I expect people to strongly disagree and I understand it but this is just my two cents.

What makes you call Nelson Mandela a terrorist and a murderer? That's a pretty bold claim to offer up without validation.

I also bet right now as I speak that the users at the chimpout.com website are jumping for joy. Probably marking that as a day of celebration for years to come.

The moment I heard about Nelson Mandela's death, I decided not to pay it any mind.

To me, it was just another great person gone and another depressing feeling of losing faith in humanity, which how I usually feel whenever someone of merit greatness dies. Hell, I was crushed when Mr. Rogers died, and I was only 11 years old.

The last great person I poured tears for (or great in my opinion) in their passing was Michael Jackson. As a kid and growing up, his music meant a great deal to me, as it was often my only way of gaining peace and recovering from bouts of depression. I often credit him and his music for keeping me from the brink of suicide. I had once vowed that one day I would meet him and thank him for what his music has done for me, but when he died I couldn't bare the idea of that dream never coming true, or even the fact that someone with such a great and positive influence on me was gone.

After that, I decided never again would I cling so tightly to the death of any great notable person, as it would only remind me of how bad the world really is. This didn't work out with Eartha Kitt, though. lol
