Lionsgate doesn't fill me a huge amount of confidence, but it should be interesting to see what the big screen means to Power Rangers 20 years later. The TV seems a whole lot better. Movies not what they used to be. Gotta think the Rangers will be meeting somewhere in the middle.
So Hollywood's finally done with the 80's franchises and moved on to the next decade?

In that case I'm going to sit and wait patiently for my Gargoyles reboot/movie.

The first Power Rangers Movie taught it's okay to knee someone if you're in a giant robot.

I wonder what this movie will do

I've been expecting a Power Rangers reboot for the past, like, five years.

Was never a huge Power Rangers fan growing up, but I'll look into this movie. Might be cool.

I have a feeling that credit should go to Pacific Rim for MMPR coming back. The execs probably thought "hey we can do that... plus EXPLODING GRASS!".

Don't they reboot every few years?

No, each season is a new cast with new powers and zords, but it's all one ongoing continuity, which allows them to on occasion have characters from previous seasons return for cameos. Having old teams or rangers meet the new ones was a yearly anniversary thing they did for a while, and one season actually had Jason David Frank return as Tommy for the whole season as that cast's mentor character.

What I meant is I've been waiting to see Mighty Morphin get remade, because that's the only version that was ever mainstream-popular and would put adult asses in the theater seats for nostalgia.

It's true.

Even though I enjoyed Time Force and Lightspeed Rescue more.

Seemed like "Mega Force" was trying to tap into the Mighty Morphin years, but it lacked just about all the charms of the original. I rather liked what I've seen of the Samurai/Super Samurai series.

Haven't seen much in the way of those reunion episodes, but the all-out Super Sentai gatherings have always held a fascination. Would be a shame to just throw that accumulation away, but that's true of most things that've followed the remake trend.

I hope the budget is like Pacific Rim's $190 million budget. It was a blast to watch in theaters.

I've said this elsewhere, but Power Rangers isn't relevant enough for a movie. It reached its peak in the 90s. And even back then, the movies weren't that successful. Sometimes, it's best to leave the past where it belongs.

Unfortunately, I don't see that happening. She appears to have distanced herself from that franchise. Last year, I met Jason David Frank at a convention and he had a few words to say about the whole thing during his Meet & Greet.

- Roberto Orci Discusses the New Power Rangers Movie and Potential Connections to the Original Series

IGN: Presumably it's not tied to the 21-year of history of the show. Are you going to use the same characters from the original series?

Orci: One of the first things we did was learn and read... They have 600 pages of research that they have on their stuff. We read through the synopsis of everything they did and we are actually taking into account quite a bit of the canon in a real way. We're not just a leave it behind reboot. [Haim] Saban cares very much about that. This is something that he created. I had to go to his house, personally, to tell him, "Listen, I'm your man. Miller and Stenz, these are your guys. I promise you I won't ruin your franchise." And he said, "It's very important to me, because kids around the world know what the Power Rangers are. So you can't just come in here and walk all over it. It better be consistent with what I've been doing." And I said, "Yes sir!"

IGN: Oh, so then does it does exist within the continuity of the TV show?

Orci: It's got a continuity within the world. I can't tell you what, but it does have a continuity.

Interesting, but not all together convincing. Sounds like your usual movie 'we're big fans' side-step to me. Will be fun to see how it pans out. If it does play nice, or if it contrives a way to play elsewhere (eg; parallel universe wakka wakka).

- 'Power Rangers' Movie Gets a Release Date

Lionsgate has given Power Rangers a release date.

The studio will open the movie, which hopes to launch a franchise, July 22, 2016.

The move puts the title on the same date as Warners’ King Arthur, another movie that hopes to launch a franchise.

It also sandwiches the movie in between Universal’s next Bourne movie, which opens July 15, and Fox’s next installment of Planet of the Apes, which is to bow July 29.

X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are penning the script while Haim Saban, Brian Casentini, Allison Shearmur and Roberto Orci are producing.

Oh my word.

It's obvious now. My childhood just doesn't want to stay in the past.

Definitely going to give this a shot.

- ‘Project Almanac’ Director to Helm ‘Power Rangers’ for Lionsgate

After a lengthy search that saw several top-tier directors vying for the job, Lionsgate has tapped Dean Israelite to direct its reboot of “Power Rangers.”

Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are penning the script, with Haim Saban, Brian Casentini and Allison Shearmur producing.

The pic is expected to go up against Guy Ritchie’s retelling of the “King Arthur” story, which also bows on July 22.

Israelite seemed like a long shot for the job, given the popularity of the property and his relative inexperience helming feature films, but after a presentation that blew away studio execs, Lionsgate is said to have decided to give Israelite the job fairly quickly.

- Exclusive: ‘Power Rangers’ Movie Character Names and Descriptions Revealed

Sources close to the movie have provided us with an exclusive early look at the names of the characters in Power Rangers and a great description of each of them. Fans of the original series will be quite pleased to know that the film is going back to the beginning and revisiting some old friends, albeit with much more fleshed out background stories. Check them out below:

Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)
Jason – 17 years old, the makings of someone or something great if he would just get out of his own way. Jason was a legend of this town—a freshman quarterback with the skills to take him all the way. People knew his name. Children wore his jersey. Until, one night Jason wrapped his car around a pole and busted out his knee. Everything Jason was going to become ended in an instant. And with it, he lost himself. When we meet him at the start of the film, he’s a kid in need of redemption. By the end, he’ll be leading this disparate group of teens to shed their individual baggage and find who they truly are.

Kimberly – 17 years old, unconventionally cool all in a way the popular girls wish they were. In fact, she was one of those girls, but isn’t anymore. Not since she’s returned to school after an absence of 6 months. Rumors are flying as to why; rumors she seems not to care about, because she’s come back with this new rebel-without-a-cause, edgy attitude. But the truth is, it’s all masking a deep secret that makes her feel profoundly vulnerable.

Trini – 17 years old, mysterious and extremely bright. Her parents constantly move for work, making Trini the perpetual new girl to any school. A loner who owns it, Trini is self-sufficient, contemplative, but always observant. All she wants is to find her gang of friends, but she’ll never admit it – least of all to herself.

Billy – 17 years old, slight and awkward. Billy is challenged in his abilities to communicate and interact socially. Whip-smart and sweet, but always odd. Sometimes in a fun way, sometimes not, Billy is a kid with no filter. Showing his emotions, understanding sarcasm, and dealing with his OCD is a constant challenge. Has never really had any friends and instantly gravitates towards Jason.

Zack – 17 years old, always the life of the party. Filled with bravado and swagger, Zack’s tough and cool on the exterior. A charming guy who’s never had trouble with the one-liner, nor lacked confidence around women. A great athlete that’s never wanted to play on any team but his own. Zack advertises everything about himself, except the truth, which is that he lives in a trailer park with his single mom, and because of it, feels deeply inferior to all his peers.

I like what I'm reading. Seems like they're aiming to take this as seriously as possible...which is fantastic.

I am so ready for this. MKX web series, MMPR reboot, new MK film (?), Hunger Games finale. Ahh, the excitement is overwhelming.
