- Exclusive: ‘Power Rangers’ Movie Villains, Timeline, and Opening Scene Revealed

When it was announced that Lionsgate would be developing a new Power Rangers movie, everyone jumped to the conclusion that it would be a reboot of the original Mighty Morphin Power Ranger TV series. Not so fast! According to new intel, we have learned that director Dean Israelite‘s action picture won’t be focused on mining old property at all, but rather continuing the story told in the long-running television show. In fact, it’s looking like the movie will be wholly set after the events of the current TV iteration, Power Rangers Dino Charge. And since we’re hearing that Dino Charge characters factor into the movie’s opening, perhaps it will serve as a hand-off of the franchise to the new super-suited team.

There’s even one major villain from the early days of the series who promised she would return, but never did, prompting people to assume that she was destroyed or turned good by the Z-wave.

Yes, I’m talking about Scorpina, of course! Sources tell us the ruthless and dangerous minion of Rita has returned to plague the Rangers once more. And it seems she’s brought an army, which she uses to battle the Power Rangers and their robot Megazords in the epic opening battle scene. From what we’re hearing, the Rangers (presumably the Dino Charge team at this point) are protecting the Morphin Grid, an energy field that provides power to every generation of Rangers. This energy grid not only lets the Rangers borrow its power to morph into their super versions, it gives them access to past, present, and future Ranger memories so that they can glimpse other Rangers and glean strategies from battles. The instruction manual on the Morphin Grid is probably pretty extensive, but certain glitches like not being able to sustain two of the same Rangers for long will give the Power Rangers writers plenty of plot options to work with.

- REPORT: ‘Power Rangers’ Title & Character Names Unveiled

The latest report from Collider suggests “Power Rangers” will attach co-creator Haim Saban’s name to the title. The film, which would be titled “Saban’s Power Rangers,” will also feature a new set of characters: Callum Oliver, the Red Ranger/Tyrannosaurus; Priya Patel, the Pink Ranger/Pterodactyl; Brian Olson, the Blue Ranger/Triceratops; Oscar Fernandez, the Black Ranger/Mastodon; and Teyana Jones, the Yellow Ranger/Sabre-tooth Tiger.

Saban is involved in the scripting process with his partner Shuki Levy; both are tweaking the script at this time. It’s unclear if screenwriters Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are still involved in this stage. Additionally, the budget is reported to be around $35 million.

I've lost track of whether or not they're recasting the Mighty Morphin characters, or not.

- First Look: Elizabeth Banks Morphs into Mighty Power Rangers Villain Rita Repulsa for Big-Screen Reboot



"I've never played a villain before," Banks tells PEOPLE in this week's issue, adding that she's looking forward to "world domination – and being unpredictable as a character."

And quite the menacing character, no less: As Rita Repulsa, Banks is decked out in reptilian-like green getup and hair, with menacing gold talons to match.

Banks said it was her little brother who first introduced her to the world of the Power Rangers.

"It might be his favorite show of all time," she jokes.

As for her character's new look: "It's definitely a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa," says Banks.

"We wanted to give her a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers," she says.

Old look was cooler.

Looks just like a sentai villainess, that's for sure. Not quite the Rita look though...

That would have been a hella amazing revenant Jade skin.

I absolutely adore Elizabeth Banks. Really really REALLY looking forward to what she brings to the table.

When the Power Rangers revival morphs into theaters, the five teenagers with attitude won’t be wearing the original series’ campy costumes to battle Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks). Instead, the new cast — singer Becky G as Yellow Ranger Trini, Ludi Lin as Black Ranger Zack, Dacre Montgomery as Red Ranger Jason, Naomi Scott as Pink Ranger Kimberly, and RJ Cyler as Blue Ranger Billy — will don translucent extraterrestrial armor that crystallizes around their bodies.

The spandex-free makeover also helps set the film apart from other big-screen franchises. “It’s tricky finding a new language for a superhero costume,” production designer Andrew Menzies (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) admits. “Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.” Fans like the Yellow Ranger herself. “It’s the coolest costume ever,” Becky G says. “I’m gonna wear it for Halloween for, like, five years.”

It looks very much like something you'd expect to see in an American movie made in the 2010s, but it's not bad. Would be even better if they were brand new characters.

So now they're back to making them the original characters instead of new teens? When did that happen? So if they changed that... would that mean this is a reboot after all? I'm confused now. Though I will say the costumes aren't bad at all. I like them.

Reporting seems pretty inconsistent. Wouldn't be surprised if it's Star Trek reboot logic. Blehhh.

Apprehensive at first glance, but I'm sure they'll grow on me.

I'm pretty skeptical of those costumes. Don't get me wrong, just using the spandex suits would have been a bad move. But these things look heavy, clunky, and kind of like iron-man wannabes. And I really don't like the moulded-on mouth pieces on these costumes; I wasn't a fan of that aspect of the costume in the first place, but here it looks flat out creepy.

I've seen some criticism over the female Rangers' breastplates, saying that the breast shapes are a form of belittlement or objectification of the female characters. I disagree with that particular point, as they seem to be completely covered and the plate just accommodates the shape. It's not like their breasts are half exposed like that awful fantasy RPG armor. But one thing I don't like is the high heels. High heels and battle armor do not mix!

I would have liked seeing something more like the Netflix Daredevil suit; it provides a lot of protection, looks like it's resilient, but also looks like it's really easy to move around in. But maybe when I see these suckers in action I'll warm up to them. If a picture's worth a thousand words, than a movie is worth a thousand pictures.

- Bryan Cranston Joins ‘Power Rangers’ Movie as Zordon



Bryan Cranston has joined Lionsgate’s “Power Rangers” movie as Zordon, who serves as the young group’s creator and mentor.

The 1993 Fox Kids TV series became a pop culture phenomenon and inspired a big-screen adaptation, “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie,” in 1995. Cranston voiced the characters Twinman and Snizard in episodes on the series.

It was revealed in 2013 that the Blue Ranger Billy Cranston was named after Bryan Cranston.

as a fan of all things PR I'm kinda sceptical on this whole thing myself, but as i'm a huge fan of all things TMNT, including the two recent movies, i'm sure i'll like this as well
