Regarding the alignment switch up, I wouldn't mind being with Colorado, Dallas, and Winnipeg (or Minnesota) being a St. Louis fan, but then again, the most exciting games for me to go to are against Chicago and Detroit, and even if fans of those respective teams don't see the Blues as necessarily a 'threatening rival', we still have fun banter with fans of both of those teams and I enjoy the rivalry.

On that note, I'm just really excited for hockey season (about a month until the preseason begins!)

Whatever they do, it'll make things interesting and I'm nervous for a few teams based on the draft and the rosters switching up. I'm definitely going to follow the Eastern Conference closely again, because that shit was exciting last year, and previously I had only followed the West closely.

Can't wait for hockey...Let's go Blues!

So with Rick Nash gone, I feel like that's it for the Blue Jackets as a franchise. With any luck they'll move to Atlanta? Oh come on, a man can dream...

I also want the sale of the Coyotes to be done with so Smith and Doan will resign. They're pretty crucial to a decent run.

On a happier note, I'm taking my little brother to his first hockey game in March. I bought him a Coyotes jersey over the summer (the original home jersey, I got an away), and it just so happens that the Caps (kid lives in Maryland) are playing a home game against the Jets while I'm there, so I'm trying to get good seats so I can slam on the glass by the Jets' bench while wearing my Thrashers jersey. Maybe seeing them play as the Jets will ease my heartbreak.

The Jackets have some pieces on defense and in net that can be beneficial. This coming season, if there is one, will be long in Columbus, because the forwards are going to have growing pains while they get used to playing with one another. It'll be interesting to see who gets the captaincy out of that roster.

Smith is under contract for this season; he only put extension talks on hold due to the ownership situation, which should be resolved soon as the money is now there. I think at the end of it all, Doan will be back. I can't see him getting the money he wants from another team and now that he's tasted playoff success in Phoenix, he's going to want more there.

That's cool about taking your brother to a game, and it's good that you'll get to see the Jets play. I'm not really sure if they got better in the offseason, but the Southeast is once again wide open, so they'll be in the race as long as they can play better on the road.

Here are the NHL work stoppages since I've been alive:

April 1992 - 10 day player strike. Games were postponed and made up. This was also the first time that the season ended in June.
1994-95 season - Shortened to 48 games due to a lockout.
2004-05 season - Wiped out completely due to a lockout.
2012-13 season - ???, lockout imminent.

Coincidentally, this is every NHL work stoppage ever.

Let's not do that and instead continue the discussion. I can't believe some of the contracts that were handed out right before the lockout. 5 year deal for Cam Fowler? 6 for Seugin? 4 for Lucic? Ridiculous.

I really hope that this lockout doesn't last long. I hate the idea of the local businesses, stadium employees etc being hurt because billionaires and millionaires can't agree on how to share the 3.3 billion a year pie.

On a side note... While I'm happy that the Hawks signed Roszival, I have no freakin clue where they'll put him. I hope a trade's on the horizon (maybe Hjalmarsson, Leddy and Stalberg to the Peg for Evander Kane and a draft pick) well, at some point.

I certainly like it, but they also signed Sheldon Brookbank, who I guess would be a 7th D man (even though he makes 1.25 mil, which to me is a bit pricey for a 7th D) and they have Montador making 2.75 mil.

I believe the Hawks said that Monty will be ready for the start of the season, whenever that may be, though I could be wrong on that. Then they also have Dylan Olsen, who played a decent amount last year.

I suppose they could start Olsen in the AHL? Either way, at some point this year, the Hawks will be benching some serious cash, as they have 8 Dmen making over a million a year in terms of cap hit, six of whom make 2 million or more.

Brookbank is nothing more than a goon. He'll play against the division rivals and scrub teams, but will probably be a healthy scratch most nights. I'd imagine that they'd send Leddy to the AHL before anyone else, as he has the most holes in his game of any of their D-men and he probably has a 2-way contract. Olsen will wind up there, too.

Keep in mind that the salary cap is currently around $64 million. Teams carry 23 players, so that's an average of almost $3 million per guy on the active roster. Chicago is currently over the cap, however. The big guns for the Hawks are pricey to be sure:

(Source: CBS)

Keith - $8 million
Hossa - $7.9 million
Seabrook - $7 million
Kane - $6 million
Toews - $6 million
Montador - $4.6 million
Sharp - $4.2 million
Oduya - $4 million

Hell, even Hjalmarsson makes $3.5 million. They balance it out with 7 or so players who saw significant time last year making less than a million: Mayers, Carcillo, Stalberg, Bickell, Leddy, Smith, and even Ray Emery is only a $600K cap hit at the moment. The Hawks need to figure out how to dump some of this salary. I would suggest trading Bolland ($3.375 mil), Hjalmarsson, or both in exchange for picks and/or prospects, but since there's a lockout, no trades can be made. An interesting dilemma they have.

Nah, those might be their salary, but that's not their cap hits.

Keith - 5.51 mil
Hossa - 5.23 mil
Seabrook 5.8 mil
Kane - 6.3 mil
Toews - 6.3 mil
Montador - 2.75 mil
Sharp - 5.9 mil
Oduya - 3.3 mil

Those are their cap hits per NHL Numbers and Cap Geek. As it stands, the Hawks are currently at 62 million. I'd be fine with trading Bolland except for the fact that he's a solid 3rd line center (even if he's overpaid for his production) and center is not a position of strength on the big club or in the farm system (Toews notwithstanding).

I'd rather deal Montador, but given his issues, I can't imagine any team wanting him unless they're desperate to get above the cap floor.

Oh yeah, I didn't see the post further up... I got NHL 13 on 360. Anyone else?

Also, just for funsies... Who do you think will be in the East and West Conference finals this year, who wins, and who goes on to win it all? You know, this year or whenever they decide to play hockey again.

I've got the game. It's great fun, really enjoying the new physics (even though I've seen some hilarious glitches so far).

Here's what my predictions would be, in order of finish, playoff seed in brackets:

ATLANTIC - Rangers(1), Penguins(4), Flyers(7), Devils, Islanders
NORTHEAST - Senators(2), Bruins(6), Canadiens, Sabres, Maple Leafs
SOUTHEAST - Hurricanes(3), Capitals(5), Lightning(8), Panthers, Jets
CENTRAL - Blackhawks(3), Red Wings(6), Blues(7), Predators, Blue Jackets
NORTHWEST - Canucks(1), Wild(5), Avalanche, Oilers, Flames
PACIFIC - Kings(2), Sharks(4), Coyotes(8), Stars, Ducks

PLAYOFFS
Rangers over Lightning
Capitals over Penguins
Senators over Flyers
Hurricanes over Bruins

Canucks over Coyotes
Wild over Sharks
Kings over Blues
Blackhawks over Red Wings

Rangers over Capitals
Hurricanes over Senators

Canucks over Wild
Kings over Blackhawks

I really wanted to see Rangers versus Kings last year. That would've been a great matchup of similar teams. Great goaltending, high-powered offenses and just enough toughness to make it interesting. With Nash on the blue shirts now, it would be even better this year.

Sharks a last place team? I can't see that. They still have too much firepower in the top six, with Marleau-Thornton-Havlat and Clowe-Couture-Pavelski. If they get riddled with injuries, the defense doesn't hold up, and Anaheim plays over their heads, maybe, but I'm not sure how it happens, personally.

I'm really not a fan of the Black Ice jerseys, because the colors kind of get lost when they're covered in black like that.
