Lately I've noticed some instances of people using language deemed offensive by other users. The end result is that a mini-argument ensues over what is and is not acceptable to say, and this totally detracts from the original topic. So the purpose here is to have a thread where people can say everything they need to here without cluttering up other threads.
Essay bit here:
Firstly, looking at what is and isn't offensive is a question of the evolution of society and how it uses language. What was considered bad twenty or more years ago has become all but mainstream, and new words replace the roles of what is considered the worst things to say. Secondly, on a trickier level, what offends really is down to what individuals find offensive, and it is really impossible to predict an outcome without knowing certain things about the person or persons to whom you are addressing.
Most "traditional" swear words of note relate to excreta
However, in these ever-changing times, the words that cause the most controversy are those that relate to groups of sub-cultures within society, usually in a derogatory way, even if the intention was not to cause offence. e.g. words that mean the same thing as 'a black person' or 'a gay person'. Be aware that if you are using a word such as this and you don't belong to that group, you risk inflaming a situation where one could have been avoided. Also if you do belong to that group, it's still wise to think carefully about the use of the words.
In my case, i can say 'fag' or 'queer' all day long, but i wouldn't even bother most of the time. I certainly wouldn't apply the word to anyone else because even if it was meant in jest, tone and familiarity go a long way to communicating that, and those are things very difficult to judge in writing, especially in this format (on a forum).
Essay bit over.
Might i ask everyone to take the time to think about what is and isn't appropriate for use on a public forum. I hate to sound preachy and i'm certainly not accusing anyone of intentional bad behaviour. The majority of users here don't cause any trouble of this nature, but to the few who have I close by saying this: Be aware that how you talk in real life can't always translate into written words, and like i said already, you risk inflaming situations and detracting from the real topics.

This thread is gay.
Only kidding. I would say I agree with you. While I stand firm that everyone has the right to say whatever they please, no matter how vile it may be, I think thr average person these days is losing their filter. To me, freedom is having the right to do something, not requiring that you do it. Being able to speak freely doesn't necessarily mean you should freely use words that are considered taboo.
On a related note, I think people are way to willing to talk uncensored about sex, or other fairly personal matters. I never know what my response is supposed to be when someone tells me of their last conquest or how drunk they were last night.

I don't know what you're fucking talking about.
I think people can say all the cuss words they want. But when it gets to being racist, homophobic, sexist, etc. then that's crossing the line. But words like "shit," with no insensitive meaning behind it is fine. On the other hand, words like the n-word are clearly crossing boundaries.

I have no filter, but I wont go off, if its unnecessary.
If you can play these ultra violent, blood squirting games, a curse word or two, is not going to pull your panties down. If someone says something crazy directed to you, you have the right to say something back just like in real life. Its even easier online as you can look the other way if thats how your built. Its not that serious. We are strangers that will disagree every now and then.
Now I dont encourage anything, because Im sure they wont allow any random offensive terms blasting away either on mko which is cool. Increase the peace.

I am a strong believer in context. If nothing offensive is said (especially in a casual setting) and someone has a mini stoke over the word "fuck", then please tell them to grow up.

^Agreed.
But holy shit man that gif... first time a gif ever hurt my eyes.

This really is the crux of what i'm getting at.

Like i mentioned, "traditional" curses don't bother me or many people these days. I'm not even "offended" per se by derogatory homonyms for 'gay'. My point is that it tends to derail other threads. One minute we're discussing how Kung Lao 'survives' a broken neck, the next i read a war about how to use the word "fag". It could have been avoided.
Personally, I don't care either way. Swear or don't swear. It doesn't matter to me personally.
To swear at an appropriate moment can add emphasis to what you're saying. While many may see it as "unintelligent", to me it can add to a sentence. While there are those who take it comically too far, it's nothing to fret about. They're just words, right?
To not swear can be see as a sign of intelligence. Finding a different descriptor to emphasize what you're saying- if you pick the right word. Your vocabulary should be vast if you plan to use this method. Nothing is more pathetic than seeing somebody struggle to find a word to communicate frustration when they could have just as easily dropped a big old "fuck" to get their point across.
These should always be your two options. Always. One of my biggest pet peeves is seeing somebody censor a "bad word" on the internet. Writing "I hate this f**cking game" is, in my eyes, substantially worse than just writing out the word "fucking".
Censoring yourself implies one of two things:
1) YOU are uncomfortable with swearing, in which case, go with the "don't swear" method above.
2) You're concerned about having other people read a swear word on the internet. This one is by far the most common, and the biggest contradiction. By writing "f**k", you're making me read the word "fuck". Nobody has ever stopped on the word "f**k" and went, "I wonder what he meant by that...", so ultimately your efforts to save my virgin eyes have been a complete waste of time. Worse yet, is when people write "I hate this #%* game!". Now, not only am I 100% aware that there is a swear there, I'm going to try to figure out what word you covered up in order to keep your sentence cohesive. Now, not only have I said a swear word to myself, but I've said multiple bad words. Did he mean "fucking"? No that doesn't make sense. There's not enough symbols. "I hate this fuck game" doesn't make sense either. Oh! He must have meant "I hate this shit game"! Now, not only did I waste my time figuring out your shitty little word-puzzle, but I've said three offensive words in my head all because of you. I'd have paid no mind to what you wrote if you had just said "shit" in the first *$%#!@n place. (See? You just did it there, too, didn't you? "fucking" doesn't fit up there, as the riddle ends with an 'N', but what else could fit? Also, for me to leave off that last 'g' in "fuckin" would be odd, as that has not been my writing style thus far. I WROTE "GODDAMN". IT SAYS "GODDAMN". NOW YOU'RE THINKING ABOUT THE WORD "GODDAMN" AND WONDERING IF IT IS OFFENSIVE, WHICH YOU WOULDN'T BE DOING IF I HAD JUST WROTE THE FUCKING WORD OUT IN THE FIRST PLACE.)
Sorry. I lost my cool back there.
Please use discretion when swearing. Thanks. :)

When it gets to the point where you just curse in a normal tone during a regular discussion, that's when it gets a little annoying. Especially when you're having trouble saying the name of a subject & instead of saying "ummm" you go "fucking....." That is sort of straying towards the Tourettes spectrum in my opinion. This video got me to the point where swearing is not even enjoyable anymore
Which reminds me. Would anyone allow their children to swear in front of them?

I don't really care about cussing. But what I do have a problem with here is the blatant sexism in telling someone they're "whining like a girl" or how they shouldn't have a particular interest because of their gender. Not to mention the ableism in calling others retarded. I could even get into sexual harassment, which led to my decision to leave this site for 3 years. I think more should be done about these issues.
