Well, Ed Boon did say that Kano was inspired by the recent release of T2. Sonya may have been inspired by Sarah Connor, but the name is actually his sisters.

Wow Sonya is the one character I never realized was a rip off. You are absolutely right though, she is chased by the Terminator Kano. If she didn't have a history with him, then it would be more coincidental.
