People Who Wear, but Dont Need, Glasses: wtf?
Ok, I've needed glasses for some time and I put it off for a while; I never like the idea of having to get up and put something on, I guess I saw it as a sort of weakness. I finally gave in and got a pair (don't snicker), however I didn't like what the shop offered. I've always been a bit of a different dresser, my teachers and mother say I dress like an 80 year old former accountant. 90% of my wardrobe has buttons and collars, the rest are sweaters, I own 0 shorts, and to me my 4 T-Shirts (all of which have Captain America on them) are underwear for formal dress. So I wanted some glasses that seemed a little more conservative. So I went online and found a frame that I rather liked, a classic blackframe, rimless, 50s style browline. Here is where things got weird.
When I returned to school (first off no one knew what the hell Browline meant, so I heard terms ranging from Horn-rimmed to Nerd glasses), I attracted the attention of people I don't really seek the company of. One of my friend's girlfriends is one of em'. Don't get me wrong, she's a nice person, but strange. Constantly dying her hair, purposely tattered jeans with random patches, that sort of thing. Anywho, I went to see my buddy and she was there, and she had yet to see my glasses. She gasped and offered to buy them from me. Before I could respond ( I was really confused), she took them off my face and put them on and then made a face. I snatched my glasses back and she looked at me and said "You need those to see?!" I said "Duh, why would I wear them if I didn't need them?" Then she pulled a pair of black framed trapazoidal glasses out of her bag and put them on and said she wore them but didn't need too. I asked her why and she said it was cool and a lot of people did it. Since then, I've had more people ask if I actually needed them.
The hell is this?!!
Why is this now a fashion trend? It's like pretending to a use a crutch. It is to correct a disability; a negative attribute that hinders your life! I honestly dislike wearing glasses but I can't touch my eye nor am I courageous enough to have lasic. Now people who have 20/20 vision basically mock me by wearing glasses. I pisses me off almost as much as people who wear Comic shirts but can't tell me what company make the hero. I once tried to engage a girl who was wearing a Superman shirt in conversation and she didn't even know what DC comics was. I'm getting off topic.
ANYWAY
What is this weird appeal to fake an impairment. I honestly feel offended when people do it. I'm asthmatic, whats are they going to do next? Have banaca enhalers? I just don't get it.

I've never met anyone who wears glasses just for an accessory and it's a good thing too because I'd probably take them off their face and step on them. I'd love to not have to wear glasses, but until I either decide to wear contacts(Don't like touching my eyes) or get lasik eye surgery(Not a 100% garunteed) I have to suffer and wear them. I hate getting tan lines on my face from my damn glasses, I hate having to clean them on a daily basis, I hate forgetting that I have them on when I go to change my shirt and nearly break my nose when they get caught in the collar(Yes I am a massive klutz).
It's a little bit insulting to think people actually wear them to look better/smarter when most people who wear them have no choice. Sunglasses I get, actual glasses I don't. So I agree with what you're saying. There's no reason for people with 20/20 vision to wear glasses except for vanity, and that just makes them seem arrogant.

Yeah it seems to be a popular trend the past few years. If you happen to follow GQ or Esquire it seems to be gaining more attention (along with skinny jeans , another topic all together). I've never meet anyone who wears then as an accessory either. Seems to be more the Starbucks/Cafe type crowd that would do this.
I find it equally as baffling how someone can choose to wear glasses just for the hell of it. Most people who have to wear them don't like them in the first place. It's really a stupid trend IMO. Most people who have to wear then, do so because they can't or don't want to wear contacts.

I kind of find it a little silly.
I have horrible eyesight. I had to get glasses when I was 6, in first grade. So, I was one of the first kids in my grade to need glasses.
Unfortunately, I inherited astigmatism from both of my parents, so I have shit vision.
It's just a dumb trend in my opinion.
Like huffing on an inhaler, when I have no asthma/allergy problems, just because it looks cool (hypothetically, like OP said.)
Or, how about I just start rolling around in a wheelchair.

It's just fashion. Like wearing a scarf, make-up, or a hat.

My family's financial situation has been so bad I've had no choice but to wear the same glasses for the last 7 or so years, getting green rust crap on my nose, plus they're bent because of an incident with this punk who harassed us for an entire year. Luckily my dad got his Disability money so my folks are gonna get me new ones, Fi-Nal-Fuck-Ing-Ly.
Anyway, people who wear them as accessories ain't right.

Heh, I hope so.
That or I'm gonna have to make a sister thread about how UTTERLY FUCKING OFFENDED I am at the people who wear cargo pants, but don't actually have any cargo to carry.
Your days are numbered you frauds.

Heh, joke thread or not, I knew a few people who wanted glasses because it's cool. I have to wear them, I can't see far, and they're annoying because I can't wear any glasses that have the nose pads on them, but the ones I do now, they're kinda big on me, slides down my nose a lot and I've never bothered to get them fixed. I just don't want to head all the way out to where I go to get my eyes checked. Kinda far.
But I'm not sure why people would want to wear them just for fashionable reasons. Sure they make you look a tad bit different, but they're annoying to wear if you don't have the right size glasses on you or whatever. They're annoying.
I can't wait to get laser eye surgery... Everything will be a heck of a lot better then.

For some reason it is a fashion thing over here in Britain. Usually with women, for some reason they think it is sexy if they wear big Urkel glasses.

Like others said, it's mostly a fashion thing or maybe it's a form of fetish (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Meganekko) My advice is to just ignore it since these trends usually go away with time. I bet the next trend is having snazzy dragon avatars

It's quite funny though. I got laser eye surgery to be free of glasses. Best thing I ever did and I know people who wear them purely as a fashion accessory (and one dumbass who insisted on wearing prescription glasses she didn't need and constantly fell over things.)
I think glasses have transformed from a burden into a trend.
People forced to wear glasses did such a good job trying to make their handicap look like a fashion choice that it actually caught on, and now even non-impared people are doing it.
Glasses aren't the only thing that's had this happen though, I mean...You could go anywhere with this.
- People who can't grow facial hair getting mad at those who shave their faces
- Homeless people getting mad at kids who dress "grunge"
- Nudists getting mad at pornstars
- People with dark skin getting mad at people who tan
- Ninjas getting mad at people who dress up as ninjas on Halloween.
You could be negative about every single thing that someone does that you did before them, or you consider a burden, but all that does is project a negative feeling. Who wants that? Be happy.
I have a feeling you're less upset about people who pretend to be handicapped, and more upset about the fact that this is just another way you're being forced to conform. You sound like the type of person who enjoys going against the rest of the crowd when it comes to fashion sense, and I think that's cool. In your mind, it seems like your dress shirts and slacks vs everyone else's t-shirts and shorts are a statement, but your statement is weakened because you now have to wear something that many other people do too, and it's worsened because now you're just finding out that many other people are doing it just for fun! Now others are confusing their "fun" $2 dollar store glasses for your legitimate well-picked-to-suit-you "crutch" glasses, and it's sending the message that you're into a trend you blatently dislike.
You need to stop focusing on what other people perceive, and focus on what the people who know you (really KNOW you) think about you. Sure it looks like your glasses are just part of a trend to some people, but to yourself, and your close friends? They know the truth. That's all that should matter. 90% of these people you'll never see ever again once you finish school anyway.
...And hell, if my advice doesn't work, you can always walk around with a Wile E. Cyote-type sign that says "I NEED THESE TO SEE. THEY'RE NOT A FASHION CHOICE."

I wear glasses, but not much. I wear my glasses when I need them.
Fortunately, my vision is good enough that I don't have to wear them all the time, I can still live my life without them, but they do help when I need 'em.
(It's nothing about fashion!)
