People of color is not the same thing as saying "colored". It is an accepted term in discourse about race in academia.

It's basically designating you as a second class citizen. You're not actually identified as a "person", no, you're a "person of color", which openly defines the most notable fact about you is that you are "of color" and implicitly denotes that "of color" is unusual.

The premise of "PoC" was to unite all non-whites as one category, one group. They could've just said "non-white", but because of SJW psychology, they felt that it would imply that white was the default and that being non-white was some kind of deviation.

So they went with "person of color", because if the first word is "person", then it asserts their personhood first and foremost, which makes it okay or something.
