I usually put it in a ponytail (being a long haired man myself) after a shower or when I go to sleep. Or I put it in a ponytail when I cant comb it down. But the rest of the time its usually loose.

Dead cells? Well, why did you grow your hair in the first place? I keep effort maintaining my long hair because I like it and it means to me. Everyone of us likes to enjoy his/her time with something material, lifeless and not too necessary (books, TV, Internet, golf...). According to your logic, humanity would never need any work of art, machine, letters (animals communicate successfully enough without letters, right?)...
