Back in August of 2001 I bought my very first ps2. last year november 2003, my ps2 system would not play any of the games that had the dark blue bottoms, so I called e.b. and I asked, why is my system not reading or loading any games with the blue bottoms? and the man said it's burning out. and it can't read anymore blue bottomed ps2 game disks. so I took my work money and bought a new one the same day, now my question is, why does a ps2 only have a 2 year life span? thats not very long.

The fuck they do, I can't play Eternal Darkness because the stupid thing clicks and whirrs every two seconds, making it skip during cutscenes and crash all the time.

PS2s also suck balls. I aslo bought my PS2 in August 2001 and it's doing the same stupid crap. PS2s are pieces of shit.

I bought my PS2 DEC 2001 still works. Until 3 days ago it had a disk read error for every CD. So what I did was cleaned the Laser problem fixed. Becareful I pulled out the power plug and thought it was junk then but I plugged it back in its that gray band thingy.

In my opinion, the only really dependable system is the Xbox. My GC doesn't read disks alot, and Neither does PS2.

i loves me muh PS2, but i have to admit that the quality is pretty shoddy... also, as much as i hate to admit it, XBOX is the best constructed system when it comes to materials and quality... hopefully Sony won't nickel-dime it with the PS3 (doubtful though)

It explains why although most gamers own a PS2 already, the console is still selling incredibly well - people buying a 2nd or 3rd replacement...

Disposable hardware. Just when you bought enough games to make it an "investment", it breaks down, motivating you to go buy another one just to keep playing.

It happened with both the PS and PS2, so I'm going to wait on the Ps3 to see if the same thing happens again, which sounds like a high possibility with Sony's knack of new-fangled technology at a cheap price...
they need to stop relying on gimmicky new technology when powerful, cost-effective technology already exists. New technology is expensive, and for Sony to make a profit on console sales, they either have to jack the price u WAAAAY high, or trim the goodies and quality of the technology. The latter has been theire choice as of late, hence, the repeated system breakdowns...

heh heh I don't know what the heck ya'll do to your systems to F'em up, but I bought my PS2 when it first came out and it works just fine. I also got a GC 2 years ago and it works fine too.

Maybe its the owners and not the manufactuers wink

It's hit-or-miss. You either get a good one, or not.

There are people who keep the system in pristine condition in a clean environament, and it still fucks up. Conversely, there are people who bang on them and never clean the system, yet they'll still work perfectly...

logan... dood, wtf are you talking about? you replied to someones thread about a malfunctioning PS2 and said you took it apart and cleaned it... sure your Playstation may run sweet now, but that's some assembly required shit right there

No System has a life span.

If you get a greatly built machine and you keep it well cleaned and taken care of then you can own it for life. I still have an N64, NES, Dreamcast, PS 2, Xbox, and Gamecube. All work fine and Everyone of them was purchased on its launch day or that same week.

okay, guilty I admit it. Yeah I took it apart to clean it, but I see it no differently than a car!

You don't just drive a car and not touch it then say "Oh well why don't it work anymore".

However if its the machine itself then cleaning the lens is not the issue.

a machine would be a structure consisting of working parts... the lens would be a part of that machine, so it would/ be a problem with the machine...
however, i agree with your analogy to a car... most people can't figure out how to fix something on their own and expect everything to go slick, with their machine living so long as they do... but seeing as a PS2 is (at least when i got mine) $300, it's a fairly expensive piece of machinery and i've had problems with my own even though i treat it like it was my baby (or my car, whichever) thankfully, i cleaned it out and it ran perfectly again the point is, for 300 bucks, i should expect to get a good 2 years at least out of it, especially with the care i took, and i think that a lot of ps2 owners have been in the same situation

My PS2 also kinda sux... it freezes all the time...
My GC works fine... except sometimes the controller goes rogue on me (The wireless).. doesn't last long, so in gmes like SMash Bros or Mario Sunshine doesn't bother u... but it drives me off the wall when it happens during Mario Kart!
PS: Wireless PS2 controller SUX ASS!!!! Don't buy it

I take very great care of my systems. I clean them and put them away whenever I don't use them (so they don't get dusty) I was very shocked when my ps2 burned out that day, because I took such good care of it. but I do know what you mean though, some people take very poor care of their systems, thats really not good because they run into money, its hard to keep re-buying game systems if something should happen.

I guess i'm one of the lucky ones in that i have never had a problem with my PS2 and i have had it since launch day not one disc read error or any other problem, I clean it every month both inside and out, it's the same with PC's the fans on them suck in air to keep the chips etc cool this also sucks in dust which clogs the fan and also gets on the chips they dont like dust it can cause components to fail, Why i think alot of PS2's have f'd up is no one is bothering to clean them they wait until they are having problems then they start cleaning them etc, yes i agree that one or two may break down even if their owners are taking good care of them but not as many as everyone is saying, being a I.T tech I repair Many a PC due to their owners not bothering to take care of them as they should, if you take the time to clean and look after them as you should there shouldn't be a problem.
