Sony has announced the follow up to the PSP currently going by the name of the NGP (Next Gen. Portable). Gamespot has a write up on it, along with a video: PSP2/NGP.

This is really interesting IMO. There have been articles going around the past few months stating that the PSP 2 would actually be an android based phone, but this is entirely different. Some of the specs do match up like having a touch sensitive screen, and a touch pad on the back of the system, but the form factor is more inline with the original PSP (although bigger). The video of Gamespot shows the system running what looks to be either a port or portable version of Uncharted. What's impressive about the video is the video/graphic quality which look compatible to the PS3 IMO.

The specs are also very interesting. The system will use a quad code CPU, have a 5 inch touch screen, dual analog sticks (not nubs like the original PSP), and Sony is forgoing their Memory card technology in favor of flash memory. Games will ship on flash memory cards. The system will also have 6-Axis technology built into the system.

CPU: ARM Cortex-A9 core (4 core)
GPU: SGX543MP4+
Dimensions: Approx. 182.0 x 18.6 x 83.5mm (width x height x depth) (tentative, excludes largest projection)
Screen: Touch screen 5 inches (16:9), 960 x 544, Approx. 16 million colors, OLED, Multi touch screen (capacitive type)
Rear touch pad: Multi touch pad (capacitive type)
Cameras: Front camera, Rear camera
Sound: Built-in stereo speakers, Built-in microphone
Sensors: Six-axis motion sensing system (three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer), Three-axis electronic compass
Location: Built-in GPS, Wi-Fi location service support
Keys/Switches: PS button, Power button, Directional buttons (Up/Down/Right/Left), Action buttons (Triangle, Circle, Cross, Square), Shoulder buttons (Right/Left), Right stick, Left stick, START button, SELECT button, Volume buttons
Wireless communications: Mobile network connectivity (3G), IEEE 802.11b/g/n (n = 1x1)(Wi-Fi) (Infrastructure mode/Ad-hoc mode), Bluetooth 2.1+EDR (A2DP/AVRCP/HSP)

To be honest I wasn't expect the PSP2 that was shown off. I got a launch PSP, but haven't played it since God of War Chains of Olympus. I really thought I wasn't going to bother with portable gaming any more, but this has really changed my mind.

I'll confess, I'm bored already by the NGP (which is a stupid name.... because once it's released it's a "current-gen" portable". They might as well have named it "The Playstation FUTURE!").

The 3DS intrigues me. Beyond the greatest line-up of games I've seen in quite some time, it brings something new to the table and feels like a true "gaming" machine focused on, you know, the games.

The NGP looks like... a PSP... with better graphics... and a second analogue stick.

The PSP already has a terrible battery life, and this thing apparently is supposed to rival PS3 games? Call me skeptical but I think that's bad for many reasons.

- One, battery life. Even the 3DS, which has Wii graphics at best, has been criticized for a mere 4-8 hour battery life, which is STILL higher than the PSP. I can't possibly see the NGP IMPROVING the battery life, so it'll likely be even shorter, like, Game Gear-level battery life or lower.

- Two, price. How much is a PS3 selling for now? Cheapest ones are $300, right? And this is comparatively as powerful? Which means smaller technology, equal power, and higher price. PS3 launched at $600, and even the LESS-featured PSPGo launched at an overpriced $250. Whatever it costs, it won't be cheap... and portable gaming SHOULD be attractive to the wallet.

- Three, high-budget games. Now, I love huge epics like Uncharted and Killzone and Gears of War and all that... but you want to know why the Gameboy, GBA, and DS are so popular? Because dozens of smaller studios don't have to develop million-dollar blockbusters whose failures at retail doom their entire company and staff to unemployment. That's the same reason indie devs and smaller companies are THRIVING on the DS and iPad/iPhone. If the NGP is "PS3-powerful" then owners will expect million-dollar budget games... and every single smaller dev will flock to the less risky 3DS to develop the bulk of their titles. Sure, the NGP will get its God of Wars and Uncharters and Metal Gear Solids... but I can't see companies pouring millions of dollars into a portable when they could make just as much money (probably more) by releasing a big console version instead.

- Four, big scale, small screen. As someone already pointed out, if you want to play a huge, cinematic epic like MGS4 or Uncharted, would you prefer to play it on the bus surrounded by noisy strangers or at home on your big 42-inch HD TV with a wicked home theater system? Portable gaming is great in small bursts with short and simple goals and objectives to work towards (e.g. Angry Birds, Infinity Blade, Pokemon) while 12-hour epics feel ill-suited towards portable systems. Even now, how many people consider Chains of Olympus to be a "core" GOW game and not a spin-off? Or Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker? Or Silent HIll Origins? Or Okamiden?Or Kindom Hearts: Birth by Sleep? Or Valkyria Chronicles 2? Or The 3rd Birthday? None of them are really viewed as fondly as their "core" titles nor are they taken as seriously... and these are the system sellers. People prefer Soul Calibur IV on the big screen, not the portable one, and I think most gamers won't bother to buy a game twice just to have a portable version.

- Five, lack of originality. Nintendo has always been innovators. Many may claim they're nothing but "gimmicks", but those gimmicks have proven to be enormously successful and then subsequently adopted by their rivals at every turn. Nintendo practically created or popularized wireless controllers, rumble features, gyroscopic games, analogue sticks, lock-on targeting, multi-game connectivity, motion controls, touch-screen gaming, backwards compatibility, 3D gaming, and user avatars, which all their rivals then copied. Is there a single, solitary new idea in the NGP that makes it truly "next gen" besides more horsepower? Tell people on the street "The Nintendo 3DS gives you a glasses-free portable 3D experience!" and they'll be impressed. Tell them "The Sony NGP has a second control stick and 3G and nice graphics!" and they'll be confused or disinterested.

Who knows? Maybe Sony will totally surprise me and somehow make a system that looks as good as the PS3 with twice the battery life of the PSP, sell for $150, and simultaneously release with Beyond Good & Evil 2, Psychonauts 2, Chrono Trigger 2, Final Fantasy VII remake, Okami 2, Skies of Arcadia 2, Shenmue 3, and the greatest Sonic game ever made...

... and even THEN, I'd still probably think the 3DS looked like a fresher, more enjoyable alternative. Ocarina of Time and Kid Icarus can, admittedly, induce quite a bit of unconditional love.

I guess we'll see... but the PSP had its problems (beyond lacking a second-nub) and the PSP2, er, I mean "Next Generation Portable", doesn't look like it really fixes or improves on what was wrong with it before beyond throwing more graphics at it.

But I look forward to more crazy, racially insensitive or hilariously annoying ads from Sony about the new system.

At first, when info was first leaked, I was really excited about the PSP2, it seemed like it'd have a lot of potential and vastly improve over the PSP. But after this, I realize, it's probably just going to be another overpriced, underperforming brick that Sony's throwing at my head. I'll just wait for the 3DS to have a slight price drop and go in for that instead.

The only thing I really found entertaining on the original PSP was Twisted Metal Head On and any Madden game. I think that is pretty pathetic that I couldn't find anything else to play on a PSP but MADDEN. I don't even play Madden a ton on my console copies.

At Least DS games can keep me interested. I want to see what this will release with though before I make any certain decision on it.

I really want to see how Call of Duty turns out on the system. I think if Ativision can capture the feeling of the console versions on the portable it could help sell the system big time.

Words can't even express how sick to death I am of Call of Duty. The fact Activision whores that franchise out so badly, yet sends amazing games like Singularity and Blur out to die (and then blames the developers for their commercial failures) continues to piss me off to no end.

What MIGHT interest me in a NGP is possibly a Team ICO game. Maybe.

Some people here are just haters, dont even bring up the 3DS, PSP2 beats in every single way, better hardware, way better graphics, 5 " OLED touchscreen plus back touchpad, dual analog sticks(real ones) for much better control, PS3 compatible, better games (yea, uncharted, ressistance, Metal Gear, COD, lost planet, and theres going to be way more.)

And dont mention price or battery life because you dont know that for a fact.
But Sony has said price will be reasonable, and battery life will be greater than original PSP.

This thing has graphics that you can compare to the PS3, thats how close, and I bet you havent seen the new uncharted on it because if you did yall wouldnt talk shit.
It can be connected with you PS3 account, you can message and connect with other users. Go on internet,do anything. Even 2 cameras plus sixaxis motion control.
Its also getting alot of attention from developers so expect many games to be announced, this isnt a joke, NGP is serious buisness.

Dont just say its a better upgraded PSP, its more than that

3DS is just a upgraded 3DS, with the biggest gimmick

NGP will take fat stanky shits on the 3DS

And we dont have much information but it will come and you can hate all you want but facts are facts and your gonna have to accept it. Oh and about game price 3DS games have been listed as 40-50 dollars. And about the NGP price, Sony isnt afraid to sell at a loss. The PSP Go was an experiment, an experiment for the PSP2, they have learned from it. So they know exacly how to do it this time.

Thangs are differant this time around.

...looks at above comment and sighs.

Anyways...some news.

According to Matt Leone of 1UP.com who supposedly interviewed Shuhei Yoshida of Sony, the battery life will be about the same as the PSP.

SEGAmaniac is right. NGP might not have the greatest battery life but what do y'all expect with ps3 like graphics on a handheld. Haterz gonna hate but they know the new handheld is kickass and truly better than the gimmiky 3DS(which is still pretty cool). And as far as PS's marketing goes. PS is doing the best.

That doesn't prove shit, it means that at minimum it will have the battery life of a PSP 3000, which is still OK, considering the tech in it.

No Confirmation at all.

However its been said they are trying to improve the battery life and with a little less than a year, things change and it very well could be possible.

Its not like 3DS has amazing battery life, with 3D on the battery life is pretty low, and dont argue that its more with 3D off, cause 3D is the only thing its got going. The 3Ds graphics are mediocre for a portable while PSP it over the top.
If you take a look at all the PSP2 specs, a 4-6 hour battery life( at minimum) is actually impressive, for such a poweful handheld.

Graphics are the LEAST important part of any new system. What matters most is affordability, lifespan, and, most importantly, the GAMES.

There's a reason the Gameboy lasted over ten years, despite competition from VASTLY technologically superior systems like the Game Gear, Neo*Geo Pocket, Wonder Swan, and more.

PS3 is the most powerful system on the planet right now... and it's absolutely dead last in the console race. The Wii is the most technologically inferior, yet it's the best selling.

Look at last generation. The most superior, the Xbox, wasn't terrible, but it really struggled, while the PS2, the most inferior technologically, was the best selling.

Graphics come and graphics go. If all the NGP can offer me is "better graphics" I'm immediately not interested. If it can give me better GAMES, then by all means, my interest is piqued, but there was hardly a single game on the PSP that I absolutely felt was a system-seller. If Sony thinks that more tech means a better system, they're flat-out wrong. "LAIR" may be an amazing looking PS3 game, but it's a terrible game despite all the visual flourish it has. FFXIII is the least-loved FF game ever, despite being the prettiest. We are a generation that has grown tired of graphics and one that is becoming enamored with gameplay.

And I'll put my money where the best GAMEPLAY and games are... or maybe I'll just pull out my monochrome Gameboy and play through Link's Awakening again.
