I was always under the assumption that a sai was more geared towards striking than stabbing. Someone with more expertise in weapons can probably correct and explain.
My brother has a pair of sai, the tips are rounded as well.

The Sai were sharp a VERY long time ago (like when they were first used as weapons)..they have since been changed and now have Dull tips..ALL OF THEM. The only 'Sharp' Sai you can buy are the Elektra Collectable Sai (can likely be found on Ebay) ... but they are hardly usable and not recommended..(believe me, I have a pair)..The hooks are too thick for one thing..and not wide enough apart either. Any Martial Arts Weapon supplier you go to to get real Sai..will only have them with round tips.
Hope this helps.

I have a pair of Sai myself.
Go for the leather wrapped sets, avoid the others...unless it's a showpiece only.
There are some really nice sets out there with engraved dragons along the middle tong, wished I'd have bought those at the time.
There are sharp Sai, but they are in the form of blades and are more like Short swords than anything, save that they have the curved guards on them.

Sai's are rounded for the purpose of protecting one's self and/or others from injury. If you go to most martial arts tournaments, you'll see many people with such sai's. Much like kama's, they're blunted for demonstrations and training. Although, at a recent tournament I went to, I saw people with 'slightly'(a hair or two from being sharp) blunted.
Go to Gungfu.com or other online martial arts supply sites to find good deals on sai's.

Yeah, from what i hear, sais are mostly used for striking (much like metal rulers or sticks) and trapping, and aren't geared towards stabbing as much as people would think. As GD said this might just be something that came about over the years for safety reasons though. Like the wooden incarnation of karma used a lot in demonstrations today. I'm not sure really.
I think you'd be hard pressed to find sharp sai anyway, but they're certainly out there. Good luck in finding some.
