I'm in my last semester of college finishing up my Associate degree in Web Developement. I've always wanted to get into video games or computer animation though. I was think of trying to learn Maya or aleast a basic overview of how to use the program this summer. Can anyone recomend any good beginer/introduction books for learning it? Something that doesn't get too technical, but also doesn't lack some of the more advanced feature/techniques. I was looking at the Visual Quick Start book from Riddell since some of my professors have used that series for some other programs like JavaScrift, and Photoshop. But can anyone recommend anything better? Thanks.

kabal20... Alias is offering Maya PLE on their site. It's FREE for you to use only for non-commercial use. Basically, you can't make money from what you create. I'm sure theres some sort of watermark on the files that prevents people from doing so.

The download is FREE, but if you want the cd w/ booklet then it's $20+ shipping & handeling.

Here you go!

http://www.alias.com/eng/products-services/maya/maya_ple/index.shtml

ALSO!

Go to 3dbuzz.com to find tutorials. You can also request them to send you cd's with tutorials for FREE! They do however, encourage everyone to send them blank cd's to they can burn people what tutorials they want, then they ship them back to people.

Hope it helps!

Ya, learn Max. tongue J/K Wait...or am I?
http://www.3dbuzz.com has VTM's on how to use Maya in conjunction with UnreaEd. IE, they teach you simple Maya workflow then have you import a model - a simple one - into UnrealEd. If you have the fat pipe, download the vids. You don't need to import into Unreal, but they do a good job of getting you familiar with the Maya environment.
Books? You bet.
Introducing Maya: 3D for Beginners by Dariush Derakhshani
Learning Maya 5: Foundation by Sybex, et al (Paperback)
Maya 5 Fundamentals by Jim Lammers (Author), Garry Lewis (Author) (Paperback)
I've actually looked over Introduction to Maya, it's not bad. I'm sure anyone of those will be sweet. Just take down the author/title and peep the book store, see if you like the book or not.
Note: You have to be a member of 3dbuzz to get the VTM's. Though, it's free, the VTM's are free and it's one of the premeir 3d resources in the world. Either way, they have A LOT of resources for Maya, Max, hell even my beloved Tomb Raider Editor. ^_^ Good Luck.
