Ya, learn Max. J/K Wait...or am I?
http://www.3dbuzz.com has VTM's on how to use Maya in conjunction with UnreaEd. IE, they teach you simple Maya workflow then have you import a model - a simple one - into UnrealEd. If you have the fat pipe, download the vids. You don't need to import into Unreal, but they do a good job of getting you familiar with the Maya environment.
Books? You bet.
Introducing Maya: 3D for Beginners by Dariush Derakhshani
Learning Maya 5: Foundation by Sybex, et al (Paperback)
Maya 5 Fundamentals by Jim Lammers (Author), Garry Lewis (Author) (Paperback)
I've actually looked over Introduction to Maya, it's not bad. I'm sure anyone of those will be sweet. Just take down the author/title and peep the book store, see if you like the book or not.
Note: You have to be a member of 3dbuzz to get the VTM's. Though, it's free, the VTM's are free and it's one of the premeir 3d resources in the world. Either way, they have A LOT of resources for Maya, Max, hell even my beloved Tomb Raider Editor. ^_^ Good Luck.
