The only thing I like about Lady Gaga is her ass. But yeah, mainstream music and it's chokehold on popular media outlets is abhorrent. You can't find good music on the radio or TV really anymore.

If all that is true you get a really thin line between the likes of Lady Gaga and the likes of say a Nikki Minaj. Too thin a line for me to be able to tell a difference. I realize Gaga is intelligent and has a real musical background. I see it and I understand it. But as far as stepping out from the rest of the female pop group I don't see it.

Tell the difference with your ears instead of your eyes.

If she did more of that and less of fucking R. Kelly I'd be happy with her. "Do what you want" is only one song I know but it proves to me she is little better than the mainstreamers of today. That YouTube video was actually awesome and I enjoyed it but she's a sellout. We all know she would love to do more of that but the money isn't in it. The money is in riding rapper dick and singing about becoming somebodies whore.

I will say that she is extremely talented and gifted. Id rather listen to her than most mainstream female stars. She reminds me of a crazy mix of Michael Jackson, Marilyn Manson, and Cher. If she could just add the writing style of Maynard James Keenan in there then I'd stop hating on her.

Do What You Want is not about becoming someone's whore.

It is about the media ridiculing and attacking her and her image. She's telling them that no matter what they say or do, who she is will never change.

Again, you focused more on what you saw than what you heard. This time, it was her performance with R. Kelly.

She won't stop acting like a whore? Kelly does say she's the Monroe to his Kennedy and I'm pretty sure Monroe was a whore.

It's a metaphor.

And your referring to Marylin Monroe as a whore is actually the major reference to both the performance and song.

Let's get back to Rock shall we?

Metallica played in Antarctica, and is the only band to play in all 7 continents. Must've been some heavy metal penguins jamming out to them there.

YEAH! I seen the Coca-Cola Zero vid and thought it was a good performance, especially Master of Puppets and the Kirk solo. The small crowd was understandable. I just love watching 'tallica play.

The new wave of thrash metal is why I'm alive. It's perfect. Lich King, Terrorist, Condition Critical, Vektor, Violator, Endovein, Insinnerator (yeah, I'll put the band I play in as well, WHATEVS), Exmortus, Hatchet, Dismantle, Execution, Fueled By Fire, Merciless Death, Bludvera, man there are so many. So happy to have this new energetic stuff coming out all of the time.

The thing that pisses me off (and most of you by the smell of things) is how 'modern music industry stuff' is not even about the music anymore. I was in a hotel room recently and we put on the music channel for some background noise. I was appalled by the amout of asses shaking and heavy endorsement of so-called 'artists' names splashed against the screen. It's not about music - it about selling, and sex sells. It's not even arty or coy or wrapped up in faux symbolism - it's blatant pornography. I brought up this observation to a couple of people who like this 'cheap' un-music to try to give them a different perspective, and all i got was a look that said "Dafuq did you just say?"

Two examples to mention to back up this statement:
1. Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights video, released in 1979, was banned and deemed 'shocking' and 'too provocative' because she was dancing in a red dress that came up to her neck and ended at her wrists and ankles.
2. Miley Cyrus's Wrecking Ball video, released 34 years later, gets criticised but not banned, even though it depicts a naked girl performing oral sex acts with phallic objects. My my how times have changed.

I understand that the latter wants to shed her 'Disney' image but growing up isn't necessarily the same as being a highly publicised pole dancer with a power tool.

Rant over - back to real music. I'd say i do appreciate good pop music, but i don't feel limited to or by that genre. I like Gaga & P!nk, but also NIN and Marilyn Manson. I love Radiohead and Kaiser Chiefs, but also the likes of Linkin Park and Rammstein. From Goldfrapp to Madonna, from Blur to Guns 'n' Roses, from QOTSA to Lily Allen to Extreme it's all good. My favourite artist of all time has to be the goddess herself: Bjork. It's all about having a good mix of likes and liking real music.

Since this is a thread about Rock, I'd like to say that my favorite guitarist is Prince Rogers Nelson.

He's also one of my biggest inspirations in music. That man can write some crazy shit, and he can play a mean fucking guitar, not to mention eleven other instruments.

People speak very highly of Trent Rezor (and he is awesome), but what many people don't know is that long before Trent Reznor was the one-man band, Prince was. And he still is.

I'm kinda baffled at Kanye's inclusion in the pile of shit music artists: while he has had his fair share of self indulgent garbage, his musical genius (or talent, rather) can't be denied.

Seriously, I don't have the energy (because I'm drinking), but if I did, I'd rant. Explain. All that.

Are you fucking kidding me?

The majority of his "work" consists of countless samples. He is far from a genius. In fact, the only reason he even got famous is because people were familiar with the songs he sampled.

Genius may be a bit of an overstatement, but you must not know how difficult it is to make music, even when it consists of samples. Getting those things to sound just how you want.

As a music major and someone who has been composing music for nearly ten years, I know how much easier it is to create a track based on a sample than to create a track entirely from scratch.

Kanye West can't even create a cover track from scratch. He has to sample it, enormously. That's not greatness. That's not even talent. It's laziness.

Again, allow me to reiterate that Kanye West's fame exists solely on the fame of the songs he samples.

I've actually grown weary of Hip-Hop over the years due to its demise. When I was a kid, Hip-Hop used to be strong and powerful poetry; now it's just a template for making money.

With that said, the only rapper I've held an emormous respect for over the years is Eminem, as he is an extraordinary lyricist. I've also recently gained notice to Macklemore, though while he isn't exactly great imo, his lyrics do tend to be meaningful, and his flow can be awesome when he wants it to be.

I honestly forgot who I was talking to (the outer frames are usually out of my sight, including usernames). Apologies for the thing about not knowing the struggle.

You at least acknowledge that sampling can be difficult, and that's enough for me personally. I now realize that Kanye was been the issue for me, bu rather my own style of production and samples. It's usually more complicated than "slap other song's melody here".

And to whoever commented on Eminem, I hope oh enjoyed that shitfest MMLP2. I've never outright refused to buy an Eminem album until now.
