- Silver Sable/Black Cat Spider-Man Film Lands Title, Director & Release Date

Sony’s Spider-Man “spin-off” film starring Silver Sable and Black Cat has landed a title, release date and director.

Silver and Black is scheduled to arrive in theaters in October 2018, with The Secret Lives of Bees writer and director Gina Prince-Bythewood (who also directed the pilot for Marvel and Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger TV series) at the helm. Thor: Ragnarok scribe Chris Yost is currently writing the script based on an earlier version by Lisa Joy. Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal remain on board as the film’s producers. As of now, none of the movie’s actors have been announced.

The news comes hot on the heels of Sony’s other Spidey spin-off announcement that Tom Hardy is slated to star in the studios’ in-development Venom film. Interestingly, Venom has an announced release date of Oct. 5 2018, which, if Silver and Black‘s reported release date is accurate, would place two Spider-Man-based films in theaters at the same time.

- Does Sony Have Major Plans For SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Character?

Now that Spider-Man: Homecoming has been screened to the media (including myself) in the past few days, an interesting detail has emerged. Michael Mando (Better Call Saul) plays Mac Gargan aka “The Scorpion” and it’s no secret nor spoiler because it’s on IMDB.

As you may recall about a month ago we reported on the story details for Silver and Black, (CLICK HERE for that), in which we reported that “The Scorpion” was in it. According to my source, he plays a significant role in Silver and Black. He plays the the chief henchman for Mendell Stromm (a.k.a. Robot Master).

- EXCLUSIVE: Confirmed Villains And Details For Sony’s ‘Silver and Black’

Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)
Mendel Stromm/Gaunt
Stromm is one of Spidey’s oldest foes, first appearing in 1966 in issue #37 of The Amazing Spider-Man and he’s also already made a film appearance in Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man. In the film, he followed an important part of his comic book story line as he had a part in creating the formula that would ultimately lead to Norman Osborn becoming the Green Goblin. While the character met a grizzly end at the hands of Osborn in that film, his comic book counterpart had much more to do and it seems as though this new film iteration will as well. In the comics, Stromm became obsessed with robotics and, eventually, became a robot, well a cyborg, going by the name Gaunt.

It’s this version of the character we’ll see in the film, though we can’t be entirely sure what design he will have. Gaunt has a long history with the films lead, Silver Sablinova, and her Symkarian people. Without getting too spoilery, it seems as though Gaunt, in search of human perfection, did some vile experimentation on the Symkarians and now Silver is looking for revenge. Gaunt has continued, maybe even perfected his work, and is enhancing humans with exo-suits. It’s those exo-suits that lead into our next two villains.

Anton Rodriguez/Tarantula
A particularly violent member of a South American terrorist group, Rodriguez was an excellent martial artist, deadly in combat especially with the help of the blades he used as extensions in his gloves and boots. In the film, Rodriguez is one of Stromm’s henchmen out to nab Felicia Hardy. Sent to intercept Felicia and Silver, Rodriguez presents himself as a bit of a ladies’ man before attacking the duo with an exo-boot comparable to the toe blades he used in the comics. The Trantula’s role in the film is a small one, but it’s a nod that fans of the comics should appreciate.

Mac Gargan/Scorpion
This is where the level of cooperation between Marvel Studios and Sony becomes really interesting. With Mac Gargan having played a role in Spider-Man: Homecoming, it’s a little surprising to see him showing up here. While his role in the film is a small one, it does advance the character a little bit in terms of becoming a potential villain for Spidey in the Homecoming sequel, meaning you might have to know what happened in Silver and Black to better understand Gargan’s progression in the MCU. Of course it is totally possible, though it seems unlikely, that Sony’s Gargan won’t be Michael Mando and that this Gargan will be entirely separate, but when Feige and Pascal agree that the films exist in the same reality, it sure seems like the up and coming Mando is going to be the guy. When casting rolls around for this film, it’ll tell us everything we need to know about just how much Marvel and Sony are working together, but for now believe this: Gargan is currently slotted to be in this movie.

Gargan will have a small role in the film, but he will indeed be outfitted by Gaunt with an exo-suit, which we are told will include the scorpion tail. He will come across Silver and Felicia more than once and will return for the film’s action-packed final battle sequence.

Dimitri Smerdyakov/The Chameleon
One of Spidey’s first villains appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #1, it seems that the Chameleon will have a bit of a different story written for him here. He is Silver’s go to guy for information in South America as he is the man in the know at the Tri-Border of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil where Felicia is hiding. Another small role, Smerdyakov is in the film for only a few scenes trading information with Silver, but it’s enough to have him showoff his trademark ability as a master of disguise.

Lonnie Lincoln/Tombstone
That’s right, Harlem gangster Tombstone is showing up in an international action film! As you may have guessed, he’s after Felicia because she has taken something that belongs to him. Fans will be thrilled to know that he is set to have his trademark look in the film, making him one of the more intimidating looking villains in the film. The role is just a small one, but it does enough to establish his presence as a bad dude.

Scorpion! Tarantula! TOMBSTONE! Loving the sounds of everything except for the mutually sourced tech-suits. That sounds like typical Hollywood crap. Still, this has potential to be a very interesting side project!

- Spider-Man Cinematic Universe: How Sony Plans to Build on the Success of ‘Homecoming’

That means the characters might be featured in R-rated outings or in lower-budgeted offerings. Sony also isn’t interested in producing just conventional comic-book movies. It sees “Venom” as a spin on a horror film, for instance, while director Gina Prince-Bythewood likens “Silver & Black” to buddy films such as “Thelma & Louise” and “Midnight Run.”

“I wanted to tell the story of two damaged women who are at war with each other but need each other to survive,” says Prince-Bythewood. She’s been looking at the origins of each character in order to explain how Silver Sable became a killer for hire and why Black Cat is drawn to crime. In both cases, she found that the characters were haunted by the deaths of their parents. “Silver & Black” sounds darker than “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” which played like a John Hughes comedy with more spandex. That’s precisely the point, says Panitch.

“Superhero movies have now transcended [the point] where they’re no longer superhero movies per se; they are essentially genre movies,” he says. “It’s not so much that characters have a cape and fly. In “Silver & Black,” these two women are modern and cool. ... They may wear costumes, but [they’re] very real and very grounded.”

Little early to separate the hyperbole from the glory, but Sony seem like they're really looking to pip Marvel with more interesting films. We shall see!

- EXCLUSIVE: Sony’s ‘Silver and Black’ Production Timeline Revealed

While many fans never thought this film would get off the ground, we can tell you that Sony is moving forward with production on the film, working under the title “Tri-Border”, set to begin on March 5 and run through mid-June. While Sony will use Atlanta, where they’ve been shooting Venom, as the main production hub, they will also be going on location in Mexico as reported earlier today by Omega Underground. Additionally, Kristi Zea (Silence of the Lamb, Red Dragon, The Departed), will be working as the film’s production designer, responsible for designing and delivering the unique looks of characters such as Mendel Stromm and Tombstone.

Looking forward to actually seeing something!

- Exclusive: Silver & Black Director Says They're Figuring Out Script

Described as a buddy adventure that pairs mercenary Silver Sablinova with law-breaker Felicia Hardy, Silver & Black has passed through the hands of several noteworthy writers by now. In addition to Prince-Bythewood, Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok) and Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy have written script drafts for Silver & Black in the past, as have Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Tomb Raider) and Lindsey Beer, the cowriter of the upcoming YA adaptation Chaos Walking and a member of the Godzilla vs. Kong writers room. Prince-Bythewood, for her part, is focused on getting a great script locked in place for the film, above all else.

The Silver & Black movie will be Prince-Bythewood's second time playing in the Marvel sandbox, following her efforts directing the pilot for next month's Freeform TV series, Marvel's Cloak & Dagger (which she's also an executive producer on). Screen Rant interviewed the filmmaker on the press circuit for Cloak and Dagger, and the topic of Silver and Black naturally came up. Prince-Bythewood essentially reiterated what she wrote on Twitter back in February - when reports first surfaced that Silver & Black has been indefinitely delayed - and told us that for now, her focus is on getting the movie's script pitch-perfect:

This one seems a lot more interesting than Venom. Shame it's dragging, but better to make it good. Here's hoping!
