Sony To Scrap DVD Rom For PS3, Rumour

There is a rumour as always, that Sony may scrap the use of DVD roms for PS3 and instead go for Blue-Ray-Discs which is a sony approved format with a plastic mini-disc style casing that can hold upto 50gb, now nothing has been confirmed, but i'm wondering whether this is a good idea, more capacity = bigger and longer games, as such PS2 DVD roms only hold upto 8gb so this is a plus, but how much is the new format if used gonna cost, and will there be any DVD rom support ie backwards compatiblity with PS2 games, your thoughts are much Appreciated.

I'd like to know where you heard this rumor, because it honestly sounds possible (though very unlikely). Console manufacturing is usually done with the cheapest parts (since the companies lose money on console units themselves), and blue-ray doesn't offer enough new features to justify the cost.
Sony has a habit of using expensive technology. Look at the core of the PS2...

The rumor is on about 10,000 sites. It's been around for years.

50 gigs is a lil ridiculas for games today.
good to have, but nope.
i dont know about rumers, i remember that chinese site was supose to have the blue prints for xbox next, which show 3, 3.5 ghz chips, that is ridiculas.
3.5 i dont think is out on the market yet, 3.4 is about the top, and cost about $400 or so dollars apeace maybe, so that would be $1200 just for the processors.
plus, developers already said that and rumor and reports both said it would be the macs g5 processor design.
umd stands for umbeleivable magic disk, ha that flash on newgrounds was great, o wait here it is, this is not console war, this is pointing out how anouying companies talking stats is.

Mobster4Christ. I got the rumour from a UK PS2 mag, this months issue, and your right about consoles being about manufacturing on the cheap, but as ShingoEX said the PS2 was prity expensive for the Emotion engine, and Sony has always said that the PS2 was not a games console but a multimeadia entertainment system, so i'm guessing they would say the same for PS3 even more so if any of the rumours are true.
mrinsulto. Intel have already developed a 4.0gz processor for home PC systems they are to be released towards the end of this year early next, there is a rumour that the PS3 will be 4.0gz,The Xbox2 dev kits are known as Xenon, and they use Duel Apple G5's and run on a custom NT OS, so i guess the official Xbox2 would run the same same spec or very similar .

I've heard this same rumor too. Even if the rumor is true Sony tend to do stuff in overabundancy to to jack up the price. Aside from what they used for the PS2's specs. They also went over with the PS2 hard drive, giving it 40gb. Thats way to much, the xbox only has a 10gb and even that isn't used to it's fullest potentiial. Even with FFXI preloaded it can't take up more that 10gb since they also manged to fit the game on a dvd disk as well.
Let not forget though how fast technology is advancing. I'm sure once the new consoles come out in the next 2 years the price on it's technology will have droped to what current systems are at.

i was talking about processors availible on the market today, but u all know my stance on the next generation
all the systems will have eleventy billion gigabits of hd space, or text rendering of cgi films, and other headache features that dont need to be in a game console like tv vcr recording, which a $45 vcr can do for less.
some day ppl are going to talk about the games, not so much of sequals, but new games and concepts, stories, characters, and then i will look and go, wow thats good system, but until then, tech jargon live on!!!!!!!!!!!
