They wanted to add a different extra character to each console, and give a way to explain their presence without actually effecting the story. That way they won't need to bring them up in SC3. (At least that's my theory.) Also, it motivates hardcore SC2 fans with multiple consoles to buy multiple versions, thus meaning more profits for Namco
Guy (along with Rolento, Sodom, Haggar, and Cody - all from Final Fight) are logical choices to put in a Street Fighter title, but the characters added in Soul Calibur 2 were quite odd to put into the continuity.

"I'd like to show that to that idiot son of mine"

I think that all of the Spawn games are from namco, if I remember correctly. "In The Demon's Hand" was by Capcom, but Armageddon was later done by namco. Oh well

I think that they should've put either Jin, Kazuya or their devil froms instead of Heihachi. With Link, it was the best they could do for Nintendo since it was the most logical choice, plus he has the most fighting experience. And as for Spawn, who I think fits in the best, they put him because Mcfarlane designed Necrid for Soul Calibur II, so why not put Spawn as well. I don't know what's everybodys problem with Necrid. He was a great character, even if his command list was a little short.

Perswonally I just don't like the way Necrid looks; plus I find the concept for his weapon to be pretty crappy.
