This is the sequel to the first movie and not the second.It continues the story of Johnny Riko with all new cast of characters.The story starts off great with being put pretty much right in the action and from what I can tell,the director put most effort into the beginning and end of the movie.You have way to much talk about god in this movie and it really ruins the entire story of starship troopers.I am always up for debate about god and heaven and hell but this director seems to try to force what he believes down your throat and tries to choke to you death with it.I wanted to watch an action movie about killing bugs with our hero Johnny,but what I got was a Ticket to church on my tv.
You know the one thing I look back at the second movie now and I admire it for having its own story,even if it is kinda bad or maybe it was just the bad acting that ruined it,or a combination of both.Nevertheless the action is pretty up there for a straight to dvd movie.But maybe you are worried and ask yourself,"did they steal scenes from the previous movie?"And my answer to you is,Yes,Yes they did,well kinda.After watching this movie a third time to really pick at its flaws,there is about a fraction of a few scenes from I think the second movie or the first.It happens so fast you don't really notice it but it also happens so fast that it just doesn't fit right with the editing.And rightfully so since it wasn't filmed for this movie.
Rico(casper)does his very best to fill a role he hasn't done since 1997 and he gets it right for the most part.If it wasn't for him and his character this film would have fell flat.The director doesn't do a very good job on making us like the other characters.Take Dix for example,he tries to out do Rico and acts like the entire movie is about him,when infact we don't really give a damn about his character and for the most part he doesn't do that much for the story,imo of course.You know I am sure if you go back and watch the movie you yourself can find so much stuff that doesn't make sense for a SST movie.If I had the chance to grade this I would give it a D+.I liked the story of the second movie better but liked the acting of the third better then the second,but honestly,that's not saying much.
Is it a rent or a buy.
Its a rent unless you are a hardcore SST fan like myself and feel for whatever reason you just have to have it.
My last words on this movie.
It will entertain you for about a hour and 1/2 but don't go looking and hoping for something special.
