Survey: Social Effects on Body Image, Self-Esteem
Hello, all. I'm doing a research paper in school about the media effects on the self esteem and body image of Americans, primarily women, and I need an absurd about of surveys filled out to recieve credit for that bit of the paper. So I ask you, fellow MKO-ers, to fill them out. There are three; one is for both sexes, one is for males, and one is for females. Please fill out the ones that apply to you.
Please answer with a simple yes or no, thank you.
BOTH SEXES
1. Do you feel insecure about your appearance?
2. Do you feel celebrities are bad role models?
3. Have you ever had cosmetic surgery? Would you consider having it?
4. Do you know someone who has or has had an eating disorder?
5. Have you ever tried a commercial "fad diet" such as Atkins or Slimfast, bought a piece of miracle fat-loss excersize equipment, or tried diet pills? Did they work?
6. Do you read celebrity tabloid magazines?
7. Do you ever feel pressured to improve your appearance to satisfy your partner, or to attract a mate?
8. Do you think that commercial advertising puts too heavy of an emphasis on beauty to sell their products?
9. Do you think the ideal body image for modern women is unrealistic?
10. Would you consider a career in plastic surgery, now that the business is booming?
MALES
1. Do you feel that repeated and public users of plastic surgery, such as Pamela Anderson, are attractive?
2. Would you mind dating a girl that has had major cosmetic surgery?
3. Do you find women who wear excessive makeup or overly provocative clothing to be attractive?
4. Do you think that all women should wear makeup or provocative clothing?
5. Do you think that the male ideal for the perfect woman shapes their body image?
6. Do you find physical attributes unproportionally attractive (as compared to personality) in women?
(EDIT: This question seems confusing to some people...simply put, do you prefer a body over a brain?)
FEMALES
1. Do you wear makeup regularly?
2. Do you feel that most or all women ought to wear makeup?
3. Have you ever tried to emulate a certain celebrity with your clothing, makeup, hairstyle, or body shape?
4. Did you play with Barbie dolls as a child?
5. Do you aspire to become a model, actress, dancer, or other type of performer?
6. Have you ever purchased an article of clothing that was painful or uncomfortable, such as shoes, bodices, corsets, etc., for the sake of beauty?
Please answer with a simple yes or no, thank you.

You have to be physically attracted to a person first. Looks come first. I know, I know.. some of you are like "UH NO!!! ITS PERSONALITY!" But if that was true than millions of Ugly guys would have girlfriends. You're not gonna go up to a girl and tell her that her stunning personality caught your eye from across the room.
Sad?
I don't think so.
True?
Yes.
Sad?
I don't think so.
True?
Yes.
BOTH SEXES
1. Do you feel insecure about your appearance?
- At times, yes. I just move past that and focus on my better qualities.
2. Do you feel celebrities are bad role models?
- Yes. They represent a false image of perfection, beauty, and success that is a complete 180 turn from what I think a good role model should be. Not all, but most.
3. Have you ever had cosmetic surgery? Would you consider having it?
- No. No; I was given this body for a reason. The "flaws" that other people say I have are a part of me, and if I were to conform to what they believed I should be, I wouldn't be happier, smaller nose and all.
4. Do you know someone who has or has had an eating disorder?
- Yes, and it tears her up inside.
5. Have you ever tried a commercial "fad diet" such as Atkins or Slimfast, bought a piece of miracle fat-loss excersize equipment, or tried diet pills? Did they work?
- No to all of the above. I'm 40 pounds UNDER weight, and I have a steady diet of KFC, pizza, Twinkies, and ice cream (yeah, I can feel the girls' hate already.)
6. Do you read celebrity tabloid magazines?
- Only when I'm bored. I try not to. They're addictive.
7. Do you ever feel pressured to improve your appearance to satisfy your partner, or to attract a mate?
- Well, I'm no slob. If I were to go out on a date, I'd put my best foot forward and look nice, of course. I wouldn't radically alter my appearance, though.
8. Do you think that commercial advertising puts too heavy of an emphasis on beauty to sell their products?
- When you see a toothpaste commercial with a girl in a bikini frenching some guy and saying "I just LOVE your fresh breath!", then I, yes, I think the media puts too much emphasis on sex and beauty to sell products.
9. Do you think the ideal body image for modern women is unrealistic?
- Quite. Ally McBeal needs a burger. Supermodels look like walking tooth-picks. Sure, being fat isn't healthy either, but I think you should just be normal, and by normal, you shouldn't be thin or thick. I think women should feel beautiful, regardless of their body shape.
10. Would you consider a career in plastic surgery, now that the business is booming?
- Nope. Neurosurgery is my future career.
MALES
1. Do you feel that repeated and public users of plastic surgery, such as Pamela Anderson, are attractive?
- Is Miss Piggy attractive? Quite frankly, I prefer a 100% natural girl, even if her boobs aren't 20 lbs each.
2. Would you mind dating a girl that has had major cosmetic surgery?
- Major? Maybe a little. That shows that she's very self-conscious about what others think. I prefer a girl who thinks she's beautiful because she believes herself, and not the media stereotype that's thrown at us every other MTV music video.
3. Do you find women who wear excessive makeup or overly provocative clothing to be attractive?
- Depends on the woman. I know girls who don't wear much, but that's who they are (outrageous, flirtatious, and naturally sexy), but there are some who just cake their face with excessive makeup that hides their true faces, which, without the makeup, would be rather cute. They're just too self-conscious about their appearance, and that turns me off.
4. Do you think that all women should wear makeup or provocative clothing?
- No. I think a girl should wear what she feels comfortable wearing, and not feel pressured to go walking around looking like a teenage prostitute.
5. Do you think that the male ideal for the perfect woman shapes their body image?
- Of course. Guys want to please girls, so they work out. Girls want to please guys, so they diet and exercise and try and make themselves attractive. Not a big problem, but it usually gets out of hand.
6. Do you find physical attributes unproportionally attractive (as compared to personality) in women?
- Let's just say that not a whole lotta guys who see a fox walk by go "I wonder if she's got a good mind?" I, personally, love a girl with brains and wit, fire in her blood, and a personality that can keep me guessing over good-looks. Both, though, is a keeper, for sure. Might just be me, though.
Fatality.

Viable point I knew someone was going to bring up. I know there has to be SOME physical attraction to initiate a romantic relationship, but I was more leaning to the question: do you find yourself, once you ARE in a relationship, to be in love more with a woman's brain or just her body?

you_suck Wrote: Viable point I knew someone was going to bring up. I know there has to be SOME physical attraction to initiate a romantic relationship, but I was more leaning to the question: do you find yourself, once you ARE in a relationship, to be in love more with a woman's brain or just her body? |
You wouldn't be in that relationship if you weren't physically attracted to the person. BUT! I suppose the physical aspect is only to start the relationship. And I think as you grow older with the person, if you do, then you begin to care more and more for the person. IE: Family, Traits, Likes Dislikes. Think about all these couples who have been married for 40+ years. The reason they lasted so long is because they were entirely devoted to their significant other. So Yeah, I think as a relationship goes on you care more and more about the person they really are. I think it's pretty much equal though. Maybe you and her going through your good times and your bad times makes them even more beautiful? In any case.. Yes. A person has to grow emotionally attracted to their significant other over time.
Wow. That was gay.

I've just started fleshing out this paper really, and I was going to go for a much more lenient approach to the subject, then I read some statistics that were kind of scary. Apparently, five million women and a million or so men each YEAR suffer from anorexia nervosa alone, and in almost a thousand cases, it's fatal. I did some research into the showbusiness, modeling in particular, and I found some disturbing facts: the average model is FAR smaller than the "perfect" 36-24-36. LESS than five percent of professional models have butter or margarine in their homes. I read horror stories of a model that overdosed on diet pills, of another that ate Kleenex for sustinance.
Apparently fifty percent of females of ages only 12-16 feel uncomfortable with their body image, and most of them have tried a serious diet or even more extreme methods of weight loss.
But the issue of my paper isn't the WHAT that is happening, it is the WHY. My first point is fairly simple--the danger of the power of sex appeal as a marketing ploy. Through commercials, unrealistically endowed models and sex symbols, and the eerily perfect moguls of modern media, impressionable youth is led to believe that the only way to be loved or to be happy is to be beautiful. This also has a similar effect on some of the male population, but for men and young males, the commercialization of beauty leads them to believe that all women are perfect, and that if they are not, they are worthless.
Another point I'd like to make is the commercial availability of products that are designed to actually help people follow the mold cast by these self-destructive messages. Who hasn't been inundated by low-carb products recently? Books, films, cheesy exercise videos, unhealthy diet foods, and such only help aid the idea that having an imperfect body means that something is actually wrong with you, all the while undermining the principles of a true healthy lifestyle.
Yeah. Feel free to add any input you like, it would be largely appreciated.

Thank you!!!
Anyway, you're still not quite getting my point, which I suppose I haven't really conveyed very clearly. There are those who meet an attractive woman and find love, and then there are those who meet an attractive woman and find a vagina. To be one of the former means that you respect a woman's personality as much as her body and are CAPABLE of a loving relationship, while one of the latter will simply dump her aside once she gets boring or when he finds someone better.
