I'm not sure what to think. It could be typical modern American pseudo-racism mixed with a little exaggeration and a little paranoia, or it could be truth, or it could be a government test, as someone pointed out.

Someone could have easily overreacted, as vanilla, suburbian people tend to do when introduced to such a situation (although I may be misjudging the writer here,) and blown the thing out of proportion. This seems fairly likely...

The last line just seems very unfair and racist to me--"If 19 hijackers could learn to fly planes, couldn't 14 terrorists learn to play instruments?"

But also one must consider that this is truth, to which case I'd say that we were much more prepared to deal with the situation now, taking into account the stewardess's assurance that there were FBI agents and air marshals about the plane...

What REALLY irks me though...the writer mentioned that no accounts on the incident could later be found, and there are probably very few now (aside from this one)...don't you think, as overzealous as the government seems to be about potential terrorist situations, we'd have heard about this? Don't you think we have a right to know?

I'm not so sure about that. I mean we do have the right to know about certain things. However, there are some instances where we, as citizens, shouldn't know everything. The fact that CNN and these other news channels release information about, well, everything really bothers me. All we're doing is letting the terrorists know exactly what we're doing to stop them.

That's a good point; also, I remember one time on the news there was a story about how weapons can be snuck past metal detectors, because there are knives available made of plastic, but are just as deadly as metal knives. The story went on to say that these plastic knives can easily be purchased online. I mean, let's not give these terrorists any ideas or anything.

This was an excellent read thanks for this info, im getting really sick of all this al-quieda shit i really am. im looking foward to joining to Army in 2 - 3 years to take some of these sons of bitches out. now im not saying america is a great place but this terrorism really needs to stop. man i bet that lady was scarred shitless its cool how she kept her cool though, i know it was me on that plane i would have over reacted and probably would have starting a fight but them....

Getting sick of this Al Queda shit? This terrorism needs to stop? You make it sound like we're getting attacked every other week. How many people died on US soil from terrorist attacks since 9/11? ZERO. Granted, terrorists have been killing American soldiers in Iraq, but that was directly provoked, because we invaded a country that had nothing to do with 9/11.

Anthrax deaths, anyone? People died from that, and that in and of itself in the way it was being distributed via mail, was an act of terrorism.

Did anyone die from Anthrax? I don't remember hearing about that, I thought it was just a scare. If people did die, I stand corrected.

Actually 5 people died from Anthrax. And although the letters on the surface seem to indicate Islamic groups, most people investigating it came to the conclusion it was an act of DOMESTIC terrorism disguised as foreign-based. Remember, the only suspect they've had in it was Steven Hatfil, a former Scientist for the Fed. gov't.

But if it was a domestic act "disguised" as foreign-based terrorism, wouldn't it be considered murder, since terrorism is defined as "the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion"? Meaning, by definition, the motive behind terrorism is coercion. By trying to make it look like someone else, wouldn't that suggest that the act was an end unto itself, rather than a means to an end, as true terrorism is?

Well that would be true, but investigators believed whoever did it, was a former government employee and did it as a plot of revenge. Wouldn't that fall under terrorism since it targets the gov't and is obviously meant to frighten it?

The OKC bombing was meant to be an act of revenge against the Federal gov't for Waco, and it is definitely considered Terrorism.

That's true, but if the gov't thinks the wrong person did it, it might assume the wrong reasons. Terrorism, to my understanding, is intended to send a message. Terrorism may include revenge, but revenge killing without a clear message is nothing but murder.

Thanks for all the great thoughts and replies guys...

The question raised, well one of them, in the intial post is 'Where is the line?'... Basically, where is the line between racial profiling and safety?

The problem with this war on terrorism is, the 'Terrorists' have many faces. This is not the usual 'we go in and bomb them out' mission...We don't know who is really who they seem, and it's a scary thought.

I stopped at my grandparents on the way home from work, and was talking to my grandmother. She works for an Arab man named Amen. She has grown very attached to Amen and his family, as they are great great people. She was telling me however, he was highly upset because some kids saw his wife dressed in her cloths getting in her car, and next time the car was there, the kids tried to mess up his gas tank, with sugar or with with flame, but luckily they were scared away by a friend before anything happened. The worst part is, he has to SELL his car now, because he fears for his family's safety, and doesn't want to be a 'target'. This made me sick to my stomach.

The reason I mention that is, again, we don't know the face of the enemy. People blindly assign the 'Middle Eastern' face to terrorists, but the fact is some of the best doctors and surgeons in this country are Middle Eastern, coming here to escape these exact circumstances in thier own homeland.

I do however, find what happened on that plane a bit odd tho. I feel the passangers had a right to be concerned, as that is/was some very strange behavior.

My answer, or hypothesis anyways, is that we obviously should not discriminate based on looks. Everyone should still be an equal. I think all Americans, white, black, and middle eastern need to just be vigilante as possible. We all need to work together to bring down this common enemy..

I guess the problem is anyone could be a terrorist (shit bush should be arrested after frightening people yesterday based on 4 year old information) so racial profiling doesn't quite work. I would be raising flags with any group of more than two (children not counting) entering a plane together...keep extra eyes on them. But just add security...

Wasn't it Reagan that gave money and weapons to Iraq and Afghanistan? Also, to be fair, Saddam's Iraq wasn't a theocracy. Under Saddam's rule, Baghdad had not only mosques, but churches, and even a synogogue.

I may end up getting it up the ass from fellow Bush-haters for saying this, but I think statements like that are being a bit too hard on him. I mean, despite the lies he's told us, and the people whose deaths he needlessly caused, I kinda feel sorry for the guy. Check this article out: http://www.capitolhillblue.com/artman/publish/article_4921.shtml
Bush is starting to lose it. White House aides as well as psychologists say Bush is paranoid and delusional. Maybe he's not evil per se as many of his detractors tend to believe, but just crazy. You know how a criminal can plead insanity in hopes of avoiding the death penalty or getting a lighter sentence? It's because there's a difference between evil and insanity.

I'm inclined to believe Bush is the dumb, nutty puppet, and Cheny, Rummy, Ashcroft and Karl Rove are the actual EVIL ones.

"Most of the world" can't afford anti-depressants, or to see a doctor to prescribe them.

I'm not trying to defend what the Bush administration has done, but I believe Bush was merely a puppet for Dick and Rummy and co. It's his handlers who belong in jail; Bush just belongs in the loony bin.
