The current/previous-gen Fighting Game Genre Remembrance Thread

With that, I figured what better time than now to create a fighting game genre remembrance thread. The genre has really experienced a Renaissance this past gen. With the death of american arcades a while ago, it killed the local competitive fighting game scene for many. The genre was relegated to a niche market with only couch play or the obscure tournament scene (early EVO).
This current/past-gen ushered in a new age of online competitive play, connecting hundreds, if not thousands of fighting game fans. One of the most iconic franchises, Street Fighter, really kicked things off with online play and with Mad Catz commercializing fight sticks at a reasonable price, it really help to literally bring the experience home. Classic franchises have embraced their roots and we have seen a number of new franchises spring up in the genre. 2d fighter seemed to fair the best with online play, and while 3d fighters have struggled, I think things can only get better for them going forward.
This Friday, a series that that has been dormant for nearly 17+ years makes it return, Killer instinct.
So which current/past-gen fighting games did you guys enjoy, which ones you didn't? Which ones do you wish did better, etc?
Just feel free to post post your thoughts on what was this current/past-gen for fighting games and sorry for the long ass post.

I recently got into Darkstalkers. Great games. Lots of interesting characters and solid gameplay. Really surprised I didn't play those games sooner. That said, I'm stunned as to how Street Fighter never had a full on crossover with Darkstalkers. Capcom owns both IPs, so really how did this not happen YEARS ago? Especially since Capcom could've just reused sprites like they did. Oh well. I consider it a lost opportunity.

Dark Stalkers and Guilty Gear are probably the two franchises that got shafted on a true current gen iteration. The games that where released where nothing but ports. Luckily Guilty Gear will be getting a propped next gen installment.
I'm also surprised Virtua Fighter 5 didn't get as much tournament play when it was released. I thought it kind of fell under the radar.
I thought Skullgirls and Persona 4 had great artwork, but I wasn't a huge fan of the gameplay. I've also never given Blue Blaze a try.

I love all fighting games. Some of my fav are
Marvel vs Capcom 2 New Age of Hero's
Tekken 6
Soul Calibur 2
Mortal Kombat 4
Darkstalkers
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core +
King Of Fighters X1
Dead Or Alive Ultimate 2
Street Fighter 3rd Strike
Just to name few.
Games I'd like to see return fresh are
Primal Rage
War Gods
Mace The Dark Age
Capcom Vs Snk 3
Darkstalkers 4
I will say with fighting games graphics are improving with lighting, arenas etc. Killer Instinct Is a good example of this.
Guilty Gear Xr3d Looks amazing.
Some fighting games I just dislike are Virtu Fighter. It's just not my taste but will play it every now and then.
Some bad fighting games were Duel Heros, Transformers Beastwars Metals, Clayfighter. Even though they were little bit fun.
I still have yet to play Rival Schools, Red Earth, Power Stone, Skull Girls to name few I have yet to play but want to.
