I did some checking, and it looks like no one has discussed this topic in several years. Thought I'd give the subject a revival.
I know I'm not the only one who's into electronic music. From the melancholic, hypnotic vibes of trip hop, to the driving, full-on basslines of psychedelic trance, electronic music has an immense variety of sub-genres.
If you're a casual listener, an avid fan, or someone who would like to expand his or her music horizons, post some of your favorite tracks.
To educate those that are unfamiliar with electronic music, describe the genre of the track (don't worry about sub-genres and sub-sub-genres too much), and list a few key elements of the track that you appreciate the most.
I'm interested in reading what you all have to say. Music, in my opinion, is a very fascinating subject to discuss.

Devoted Producer/DJ/Raver here. I enjoy almost all types of electronica, but find myself drawn to Trance, electro house, and dubstep. Things have started to look up this year, I've reached number 4 on my local Reverb Nation charts and have a few mutual friends of Steve Aoki. I always love meeting fellow fans and discussing production with other producers.
Any of you MKO kids going to Electric Daisy this year? Lineup is looking pretty sick so far.

Damn, I'd go to the first day in Orlando just to see Tiesto and Skrillex. Can't afford it though. No BT at any of the shows apparently, but then again he played Electric Daisy last year.

Congratulations. I listened to some of your tracks and I like what I hear. Unfortunately I wont be going to Electric Daisy. I live in Austin, TX, and I could drive up to Dallas for a weekend, but I have way too much going on that week.

I have an appreciation for all sub-genres of electronic music. I find myself listening to psychedelic electronic music most of the time, regardless of tempo:
Artist: Emancipator
Title: First Snow
Album: Soon It Will Be Cold Enough to Build Fires
Year: 2006
Genre: Trip Hop
This track literally sends chills down my spine, especially once the bass, percussion, and lead synths enter at the 1 minute mark. It's a melodic, trippy experience.

Here's the official site of you want to follow the city closest to you. In Colorado they have Ferry Corsten, Kaskade, Axwell, and Sander Van Doorn Announced. They have Tiesto, David Guetta, and Swedish House Mafia announced in Vegas. That's all I've seen so far. Take a look!

Hey, what's up? Glad to see a fan of his on this forum. What's your opinion of his latest album compared to the first?
As for Def Cut, listening to that takes me back to the old high school days when breakdancing was popular where I lived. That was when I was first exposed to breakbeats and drum n bass. Refreshing tracks, thanks for posting the links.
So, no one else has any favorites they'd like to share? Post away.
Artist: Acid Rockers
Title: Inside
Album: Mind Set
Year: 1997
Genre: Psybreaks/Drum n Bass
This track is an amazing fusion of drum n bass and psychedelic elements from other EDM genres (TB-303 synths, atmosphere, etc.). Enjoy the trippy music video.

Well.... shit.
I really didn't want this thread to die so quickly, because I know StatueofLiberty and I are not the only ones with tracks to share. Seriously, don't be intimidated. I don't want to concede, but if this thread dies out again I'll admit defeat. I'll accept that very few people want to discuss electronic music in this community.
Artist: Sine Die
Title: Eclipse
Album: Life Hack
Year: 2008
Genre: Psychedelic Trance (Full-On)
So this isn't European trance like Armin van Buuren or Tiesto. For those who like four to the floor kicks, multi-layered synths, groovy 16th note basslines, and a trippy atmosphere, you shouldn't have much of a problem warming up to Sine Die. He's a French psytrance producer, and by far one of my favorites.
Climax at 5:40 is amazing. Perfect running music... and dancing music too, if that's your sort of thing.

I'm supposed to see Deadmau5 on the 17th of September...
I enjoy dubstep, but it's usually when I'm not sober.

Hmm, glad this got bumped. Anyway, off to see Skrillex in KC on the 13th. Might come back home to see Benny Benassi and Avicii a few days later for GDF. Been working on a few new tracks, and playing around my new town as of late. Yep, that's about all I have to report.

Im going to see Skrillex in Ottawa on July 6 ,cant wait!
Artist: Shitmat
Title: Theme From the 1998 Morris Dancer Massacre
Album: Full English Breakfast
Year: 2004
Genre: Drill & Bass?
I like absolutely everything about this track.
I prefer anything that falls under the lollably expansive umbrella of IDM, really. The more uptempo the better. I also just like noisey shit. Some of what Merzbow and similar artists created.

I don't listen to dubstep that much, so I'm not too familiar with the genre. I couldn't stop smiling when I heard the first few seconds. Nostalgia. 30 seconds pass and feel a sudden chill down the back of my neck. That bass drop was eargasmic and completely unexpected. Thanks.

No kidding. Sounds like it's pushing 180-200 BPM. Intense track. Thanks for sharing.
I'd like to know more about noise. From your perspective, what are the qualities of the genre that make it worth your time to listen to? What appeals to you the most?

Now that we've all seen Rain in action:
Artist: Talamasca
Title: Jungle Storm
Album: Goa-Head Vol. 3
Year: 1996
Genre: Psychedelic Trance (Goa)
Old-school Goa trance at its finest. Tracks like this truly define the genre. The percussion that enters around 1:22 along with the synth that enters at 2:14, give the piece a touch of Oriental influence. Goa trance does have origins in India as the name would imply. Intense climax at 7:39. Overall an enjoyable classic.
Artist: California Sunshine
Title: Rain
Album: Wonderland
Year: 2000
Genre: Psychedelic Trance (Goa)
Another great classic. One of the more uplifting, melodic old-school Goa tracks. Not much to say about this one, other than it's a very happy piece. Fitting for all of the pleased Rain fans.
Artist: Jaïa
Title: After The Rain
Album: Blue Energy
Year: 1998
Genre: Psychedelic Ambient
Nice downtempo track to end the list. Another French producer, Jaïa is also well-known for his Goa trance hits. This particular track sounds like something you'd hear in Mass Effect while relaxing in a lounge. Great use of vocals. A deep, soothing piece.

New to this type of music.
I've just barely familiarized myself with three artists.
Now, this genre, and sub-genres, (and sub-sub-sub-sub genres) all get put into one big category in my mind...
Electronic.
I can't really tell the difference.
Well this is the song that introduced to this great music:

I'm not usually one for full-on dance music,
but every now and then it really hits the spots.
Almost *all* of my favorite bands, though, are at least partlyelectronic:
NIN, The Knife, Depeche Mode, Ladytron, Lady Gaga, Dismantled, Polish Ambassador, Plaid, Boards of Canada, etc.

Welcome to electronic music.
Your case is one of the reasons why I made this thread using the artist, title, genre format; to educate potential and new listeners.
Really, all that matters is that you enjoy the music. If you want to be able to tell the difference between electronic music genres, focus on the major ones first (techno, house, trance, drum n bass, etc.).
Go to Digitally Imported and see what other genres appeal to you. The differences are definitely there. However, once you get to sub-genre and sub-sub-genre territory the differences are much more subtle. Categorizing is good for educational purposes, and to test one's ability to listen, but they can be a little redundant.

I was wondering if you could give your opinion why you're not usually one for dance music. I feel the same way in some respect (I don't always listen to dance music), but I'm interested in understanding how those who normally don't listen to electronic dance music perceive it.
Throw down some tracks while you're at it. Regardless if it's dance music-- if it's electronic, it's good to go.

Hmmm, sounds more like dubstep. Drum n bass generally has a high tempo. I like it. It doesn't sound as aggressive as other dubsteps I've heard, but I think that works in this track's favor.
@boomboom and @devilwithin
Alright, so let's hear some Cosmic Gate and Girl Talk.
