Keanu Reeves is up for The Matrix 4 (exclusive)

It’s been fourteen years since the release of ‘The Matrix Revolutions’, the third film in the Wachowskis’ hugely popular sci-fi series, and now Keanu Reeves has admitted he’s ready to make a FOURTH film... on a few conditions.

We asked the 52-year-old star, who can be seen alongside his ‘The Matrix’ co-star Laurence Fishburne in this week’s ‘John Wick Chapter Two’, what it would take to get him involved in another ‘Matrix’ film.

“The Wachowskis would have to be involved,” he told Yahoo Movies.

“They would have to write it and direct it. And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not?”

“People die, stories don’t,” adds Keanu, “people in stories don’t.”

More Matrix? Bet on it.

It’s still not clear what shape the project will take, but sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros. is in the early stages of developing a relaunch of The Matrix, the iconic 1999 sci-fi movie that is considered one of the most original films in cinematic history, with Zak Penn in talks to write a treatment.

Sources say there is potential interest in Michael B. Jordan to star, but much must be done before the project is ready to go.

At this point, the Wachowski siblings, who wrote and directed the original and its two sequels, are not involved and the nature of their potential engagement with a new version has not been determined. Certainly, Warners would want the two filmmakers to give at minimum a blessing to the nascent project. The studio had no comment.

Joel Silver, who produced the original trilogy, is said to have approached Warners about the idea of mining The Matrix for a potential new film. However, Silver sold his interest in all his movies to the studio in 2012 for about $30 million, according to sources. Warners is said to be leery of including him in any meaningful role, as he not only has a reputation for budget-control issues, but apparently has a strained relationship with the Wachowskis. The siblings hold much more meaning for fans than the producer. Silver's reps did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

I agree! I do not have any idea why they are want to 'reboot' this movie. The Matrix is one of the coolest films ever created. The reason is simple I guess - MONEY :/ It will be crap in my opinion.

- Exclusive: Zak Penn Wants To Expand The Matrix Universe

I’ve been working on Matrix right now. Which is in...a phase right now. That’s a franchise I desperately want to see brought back and, I can’t go in to too much detail, but I’ve been harassing Warner Bros. for years to try to get it going again so that’s one thing I’m working on and I’ve been working on a bunch of other things too.

I will fight people who don’t under...look, I think OASIS (the interconnected virtual space in Ready Player One) is similar, both the Matrix and OASIS are similar in that they are brilliant ideas for universes. And they are not, you know, when it came out about Matrix, people were like ‘Oh no, there going to reboot Matrix’ I was like, Why, I’m not insane. I mean, the Matrix is still one of my favorite...they’d re-release The Matrix and people would go see it.

Not a "reboot". Better.

‘Matrix 4’ Officially a Go With Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Lana Wachowski (EXCLUSIVE)

Get ready to re-enter the Matrix. Lana Wachowski is set to write and direct a fourth film set in the world of “The Matrix,” with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively. Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film. Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich made the announcement on Tuesday. “We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana,” said Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.” In addition to Wachowski, the script was also written by Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell. Wachowski is also producing with Grant Hill. Sources say the film is eyed to begin production at the top of 2020.

It's on!

“Aquaman” star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has landed one of the lead roles in the latest installment in the “Matrix” franchise. Sources tell Variety that director Lana Wachowski met with actors for the secret role over the last week and in recent days, Abdul-Mateen emerged as the frontrunner to join Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who will be reprising their roles in the film.

‘Matrix 4’: Neil Patrick Harris Lands Role in Latest Installment (EXCLUSIVE)

Neil Patrick Harris is the latest addition to the ensemble cast for the upcoming fourth installment of the “Matrix” franchise.
The role is a huge land for the “How I Met Your Mother” star in what would mark his first tentpole at a major studio. Harris was most recently seen in the Netflix series “A Series of Unfortunate Events.” On the film side his recent films have included Alexander Payne’s “Downsizing” and David Fincher’s “Gone Girl.”

‘The Matrix 4’: Jada Pinkett Smith In Negotiations To Return To Franchise

EXCLUSIVE: Several sources tell us that Jada Pinkett Smith is in current negotiations to return for Warner Bros./Village Roadshow’s The Matrix 4. She played the role of Niobe in parts 2 and 3, The Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions. It is not a done deal yet, we hear. Niobe is from Zion, and the captain of the Logos hovercraft. She’s also one of the rebels in the war against the Machines and the Matrix. In the virtual world of the Matrix, Niobe is a gifted martial artist. The character also appeared in the Enter the Matrix videogame and The Matrix Online multiplayer game.

Makes sense! RIP Morpheus

Warner Bros Sets Release Dates For ‘The Matrix’ Sequel, ‘The Flash’ & More; ‘Akira’ Off Schedule

Warner Bros has set a slew of release dates for its movies next year and beyond, including dating The Matrix 4 for May 21, 2021, and its DC superhero stand-alone The Flash for July 1, 2022.

Among the 12 titles in the mix Wednesday as the studio solidifies its slate for 2020 and beyond include moving Taika Waititi’s live-action feature on famed cult manga Akira off the release schedule. It had been set for May 21, 2021 (now taken up by The Matrix 4), and had been allocated $18.5 million in California tax credits in the spring.

The Matrix, which returns to the big screen for the first time since 2003, now sits on date with the fourth chapter of Lionsgate’s John Wick franchise, which of course is toplined by the Matrix star Keanu Reeves, setting up a Keanu Kollision Kourse in summer cineplexes.

Save the date! #WhenIsTheMatrix

Hugo Weaving explains why he wasn’t in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and won’t be appearing in the new ‘Matrix’

‘“The Matrix” is a very different story. It’s unfortunate but actually I had this offer [for “The Visit”] and then the offer came from “The Matrix”, so I knew it was happening but I didn’t have dates. I thought [I] could do both and it took eight weeks to work out that the dates would work – I held off on accepting [a role in “The Visit” during that time]. I was in touch with [director] Lana Wachowski, but in the end she decided that the dates weren’t going to work. So we’d sorted the dates and then she sort of changed her mind. They’re pushing on ahead without me.’

You probably don't need Agent Smith in a new Matrix film, but it'd still be a bit of a shame not to.

While the original first one it is, the two sequels fell from the sequel syndrome. Although they are enjoyable, both of them look like the tipical Hollywood junk film, frenetic action with weapons, CGI effects everywhere, a love story, some bad dialogues (It's a shame that the last agent Smith line was "It's not fair...").

Anyway, It really turns me off that both Laurence Fishbourne and Hugo Weaving won't be in the film, both of them were a BIG part of Matrix.
