I agree with Where the Sidewalk Ends. I was reading that book to a two-year-old and he loved it, and I'd forgotten how much I'd liked it as a kid.
"The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield. It has a very gothic, Bronte-esque feel to it. A great mystery.
"My Sister's Keeper" by Jodi Picoult. Way different from the movie- prepare to break out the hankies. Total chic lit, but kept me up until the wee hours of the morning reading.
"18 Minutes" by Jodi Picoult. Another tear-jerking work of chick lit, this one about a school shooting.
"To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. One of my favorite works of American fiction, I love the characters, especially Atticus Finch. I read it in high school and then I read it when I was older- I got much more out of it when I was older.
"One for the Money" Janet Evanovich. Different from the movie- much more funny and raunchy.
"Mystic River" Dennis Lehane. It's a dark story, but it's an amazing read.
I love WWII fiction, and these are some of my favorites: "The Book Thief", "Sarah's Key", "Stones from the River".

Anthem by Ayn Rand.
Basically, the world is different, as in, your life isn't in your control, it's controlled by others. You cannot call yourself, "I" you must always refer yourself to "we," or "us." Equality 7-2521 is the main character, and has a fascination of educating himself because he knows that he is different from everyone, who must be the same. He sees Liberty 5-3000 one day, who later becomes his love interest. He finds a mysterious tunnel and educate himself. And throughout the book, you're trying to figure out what the unspeakable word is.

Oh! I've read Anthem in 8th grade, actually. Such an engaging story, but you can really see the author portraying themselves through Equality. I remember also having to write an epilogue to the story, such fun. I guess I mostly remember it because I was one of the only people who scored 100%, haha...
Classic literature. Good book.
