The Next Generation of the Fighting Genre - Mortal Komabt 10, Tekken 7, Soulcalibur VI, Killer Instinct, and Super Smash Bros. Wii U
With Killer Instinct III now here and Super Smash Bros. Wii U under way, the next generation of fighting games has already begun.
Still, it seems quite empty and hollow without a few other games, ones that may not come around for a few more years. I'd like to expand on these titles.
Mortal Kombat 10
Ideal Release Date: Fall 2014, Spring 2015
Likely Release Date: Spring 2016
The starting point for me, Mortal Kombat 10 (or Mortal Kombat 2, for those counting MK2011 as a reboot) is the fighting game I am most looking forward to. However, it is also the game that is likely to be released last out of all the games I've listed. My reason for believing this is in regard to Netherrealm Studios being a growing company, eager to expand beyond the Mortal Kombat franchise. We may likely see many new releases from NRS before MK10 comes around, much to my dismay.
Tekken 7
Ideal Release Date: Fall 2014
Likely Release Date: Fall 2016, 2017
This is a game I think should have been released a long time ago. However, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 was released instead, but I'll admit it makes a good stall. Nevertheless, I am itching to see a new Tekken with new characters, and possibly Sebastian with his own fighting style. Unfortunately, due to the campaign for Tekken Revolution still being in existence, and Tekken X Street Fighter possibly still in development, I doubt the game will be released anytime this year.
Soulcalibur VI
Ideal Release Date: Summer 2015, Spring 2016
Likely Release Date: Summer 2016
At the release of the Soulcalibur V, I was so upset with the absence of Sophitia, Taki, Talim, and Zasalamel (and I still am), I was immediately anticipating Soulcalibur VI. Two years later, I feel the game is half-way towards its release. Soulcalibur games tend to be released three to four years apart, so I predict SC6 will make its appearance on the shelves sometime in 2016.
Marvel vs Capcom 4
Ideal Release Date: Fall 2014, Spring 2015
Likely Release Date: UTD
Though I doubt we'll see this game anytime soon, I am still hoping marvel vs Capcom 4 gets a release within the next few years. I am highly looking forward to the return of Mega Man and Venom, and I'm also looking forward to seeing more Darkstalkers characters venture into the series, particularly Q-Bee. But of course, it seems MvC4 may undergo a long, strenuous development process, one that could stretch five years beyond today.
Well, that's all I got. Hopefully one of these games is released this year, though I seriously doubt it.

MK10 is the one most likely to be released first if anything. It's been 2 years since MK9, and it will likely be released Spring 2015. I'm willing to bet that it will be revealed at E3 this year.
Tekken 7 is YEARS down the road. At least 4-5 years away. Tekken X Street Fighter is indeed still in development. It was caught in the cusp of next gen consoles and had to switch. Who knows when they'll even show it off or anything like that? Plus you gotta consider development time with Tekken 7 itself, and that's another 2-3 years.
No idea about Soul Calibur. I don't follow their release schedule.
Marvel vs. Capcom 4 may never happen at all period. First, Capcom needs to get out of their financial slump. Then they'd have to renew their Marvel license because it's expired or about to expire. In the event Capcom pulls through, the game is still a long, long, LONG ways away. On the subject of Darkstalker characters, Jon Talbain or bust. Amateratsu has an Alt costume of him, and he's the most popular Darkstalker stateside.
I know it's not technically a new game, but no mention of Ultra Street Fighter 4? The only fighting game that is coming out this year? Lol

Guilty Gear X3rd is the only next gen fighting game I can think of aside from Killer Instinct and Smash.
Though there are also current gen releases such as Ultra Street Fighter 4 and Blazblue Chrono Phantasma.
I don't know if the announced new Kof will be next gen or if it will be released this year.

I can't help but chuckle to myself when people refer to Super Smash Bros as a fighting game. I'm not saying it isn't, but for some reason it just sounds obscure to me. I see it more as a party game than a fighting game, but that's just me.
Hope we get to see some Mortal Kombat action on the new consoles soon, Killer Instinct already looks really cool and Guilty Gear Xrd as well.
Not sure how I would feel about a new Soul Calibur... I love the series, but their latest installment was a big flop, imo. It had some good things, one of the best character creation/customization modes in any fightig game to date, Zwei and Viola are two awesome characters, imo... but storywise and non-online modes were just lacking.
Unless Kunimitsu returns canonically into the Tekken series, I'm not interested. I love her in TTT2 and Tekken Revolution, and I hope she will return in future games. If not... meh.

Ultra Street Fighter 4 is a continuation of a previously released installment.
If anything, I would mention a Street Fighter V, which I know won't be coming around anytime soon. We all know how Capcom loves to stretch out their Street Fighter campaigns.

What would canon have to do with a return? Unless you're Jin, Kazuya, Heihach, or Lars you're not even in the story. It's a fighting game, if a character is requested enough they will return regardless of canon.
And I don't want Kuni back anytime soon. I like that she has the Tag games. The last time anyone played Kuni before TTT2 was back in the original TTT. Which was 11 years ago. It makes playing as her so special.
Plus with Tekken 7, there will be an inevitable downsizing of characters. I predict it will pull a Tekken 4 but with a few more characters. I can't see Kuni being one to return.

I can't blame Capcom for this one. If people quit buying them, they'd stop making continuations. But this is the first SF4 I'm going to buy, so I am not complaining.
I use to be like that. Curse Capcom for making Super or Ultimate versions, but when I pictured MK doing it, I realized I'd probably support them. Imagine if MK9 was still getting support. New characters, new stages, new costumes, and all that jazz. I know I'd buy that.
But that's for another thread. You know what else? Edward Falcon for Marvel vs. Capcom 4. It's about time Power Stone gets some recognition.

It is both, a party and a fighting game, you can play it however you like and still have fun

With "canonically" I mean a return into the main series and not just the clash fighters that the TTT games are. And I don't want to wait bloody 10+ more years to see her in a new game, she's one of my fave characters.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Guilty Gear Xrd is the only next gen fighter and Ultra Street Fighter 4 and BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma are current gen games. I also remember reading that Sega was going to be releasing Persona 5 for the PS3 as well.
There are rumors that Ultra Street fighter 4 might get a next gen port, and Tekken X Street Fighter is still in the works. I would be shocked if it didn't get a next gen release as well.
Marvel vs Capcom 4 won't be happen IMO. Capcom lost the Marvel license again. The digital versions of MvC2 and UMVC3 where both pulled from PSN and XBL within the past month.
If Mortal Kombat 10 is announced at this years e3, then we can expect a April 2015 release at the earliest.

Yes I'm well aware of what you meant. Maybe for Tekken 8 because people have been wanting her to stay. But with the new characters that will be introduced in Tekken 7, and the mainstays coming back I doubt Kuni would be there. Maybe but probably not.

Tekken 7 may see a complete reboot of the roster, much like with Tekken 4 after TTT1.
If that happens, we'll probably see about twenty characters return from Tekken Tag 2, with maybe four new characters. If not, expect to see a roster of about 50 characters.

Pretty much this. Two things are ought to be addressed: it's tough to guesstimate how difficult it is for the developers to learn the tricks with the new consoles and development kits, and in that regard 2016 is entirely possible too, depending on e.g. the Unreal 4 engine and its usability. Speaking of which, we'll get to the second point; Epic Games has revealed a bit about the upcoming Unreal 4 engine and a lot of the next-gen games using the engine will be released during the next winter and the next year. Taking into account the hype that Epic Games tries to build on their new engine, it looks like it could be even easier than Unreal 3 (NRS's former engine) was. With that said, there is definitely at least basis to look at the early summer 2015. All the same, we should be wiser after the E3.

I don't think we're going to see Tekken 7 or TTT3 any time soon. i think Namco is riding Revolution and going to test thing out in there with the community for a while. I think the next game will be Tekken X Street Fighter.

I am a MAJOR fan of everything series you talked about in the original post. Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was kind of a disappointment to me. If I had to guess, Mk 10 will be released next year, Soul calibur probably in 2016, Tekken in 2015, and as for marvel vs. capcom, I wouldn't be surprised if we have to wait for over 3 more years. Hopefully all of these games comes out within the next couple of years. Surely there has been a long window of time to work on them. Thats probably a good thing though.

This is pretty obvious.
TTT3 is at least 10 or more years away. Tekken 7 is pretty far away because Tekken X Street Fighter is coming out first. Probably exclusively on next gen consoles. (I'd honestly be surprised if it was on any current gen systems.)
And Riyakou, I know I said that Tekken 7 would most likely pull a Tekken 4 in this thread before. I'm almost certain I did anyway. I hope they do, 50+ for a game like that would be ridiculous. Plus I loved Tekken 4's serious story tone, so I hope they go back to that.
As for Darkstalkers 4, Bloody Roar Reboot, and Power Stone 3....
Darkstalkers 4 is something that definitely could happen, but not for a while. It's got such a cult following that Capcom will have to revisit it at SOME point. I would love to see how they modernize it with the next gen graphics and such. Would be pretty cool.
A Bloody Roar reboot isn't completely out of the question. With the success of Killer Instinct, I think Bloody Roar could have a chance. Provided that's it has a chance with competitive play. But I don't know about who has the rights to it or anything like that.
Power Stone 3 is probably not going to happen. It was never a huge seller or anything. It was more of a fun game so there's no competitive scene to keep it alive.
I'd also love to see Primal Rage come back. I believe WB owns the rights to it, so they could have NRS develop it. (I could very well be wrong) Primal Rage was one of the best concepts for a fighting game and I'd love to see it come back someday.

They will make a Darkstalkers pachislot.
Oh, and there are rumors about Shaq Fu 2. Now, that's the game everyone were waiting for, right?

The fact they brought her in to Tekken: Revolution over characters that either didn't get in like Yoshimitsu and Anna or all the characters that came out after her gives me a little hope.
And I have to agree with Jaded-Raven, I don't want to wait 10 years to play her again while the more dumb characters like Eliza, Alisa, and Christie would most likely still be there yucking it up.

Now see, I thought that Kuni's inclusion was more of a "Well you probably won't play as Kuni for awhile so here you go." Her getting in over Yoshi literally means nothing. He'll be in the next game anyway. Will Kuni? Probably not.

Only time will tell whether or not Kunimitsu will be in the next Tekken. Until then, it is all just speculation.

Tekken Tag Tournament is sort of like Mortal Kombat Trilogy, so I could understand that.
However, I do think it's possible characters like Kunimitsu, Jun, and Angel may see an official return to the series. Tekken 5 brought back a lot of old characters; I'm sure Tekken 7 can do the same.
