It's no surprise, but Mr. Cranky didn't like it.

Mr. Cranky tends to see the worst in every movie, but he did give it the lowest rating of all the movies that came out this week *including* the new Princess Diaries movie.

Note: I'm posting Ghost Dragon's review for him because he's getting flooded off the board:

AAAAAAARGH! No updates, but still people flood the site! Some people need to find a hobby away from the computer!

Anyhoo...

My AvP Review

Geeeeez! What a let down! Now when I say that, I don't mean a huge let down, but it's pretty lackluster.

What was wrong with it:

1. The movie is 1:45min in length which is about 20 min longer than previously reported. But, that didn't help the film. You have two franchises buttin heads and all you can eek out is 1hr 45min? 2hr 15min would have been better!

2. PG-13 rating. WTF?!!! No! They tried to bring in the younger crowd for profits and it really hurt the movie!!

On a personal note, I FUCKING HATE IT when punk ass teenagers talk all loud through out the film! Laughing and giggling and... and... talking on their cells!! If murder only cost a small fine, I would have pulled out my check card!!furiousfurious

3. The character development was there, but not fully realized. No real development early on. Just a brien introduction of the two main characters and we're quickly thrown into the movie. Saana Lathan's character was good and she did a good job. However,... I'll get to that later on.wink The people on this expedition or lambs to the slaughter to be more appropirate, aren't realized at all.

The Lance Henrickson character from the Aliens movies tried to bring some continuity to this movie, but I really didn't believe it. First off, He's the man from which the Bishop androids were modeled from. He's a genious or pioneer in robotics. (Here's a good lesson for all you writers out there.) My questions are: What kind of robotics? How has be become famous from his work? What motivates him? How advanced is his work compared to anyone else that might be in the same field? How is he connected to the corperation that's spoken of in the Alien movies? ex cetera, ex cetera, ex cetera!

Not much of a tie there. However, he does bring a decent character into the fold and it's not his fault the script was written by someone who doesn't labor to tie shit together and expand on what he has. But we'll get to THAT later as well.wink

Saana Latham's character is an experienced climber who knows what she's talking about when she tells Weiland(sp?) that the team won't be ready. Now, she was cool even when she and the third Predator.... I'll get to that later.wink But the thing that begged me is that she was an expert climber, but once they got in the temple, she then knew about when to tell Weiland about how they should proceed through there. Like she ahs experience with something on this level. Huh! That's my only gripe about her character.

4. The Aliens grow so fast. What bullocks!! Okay, for all you Alien fans and those who have seen the movies, let me recap something about the facehuggers that you probably already know. Okay, they latch on to your face and then after some time, maybe an hour or two, they release and then die. Of course the poor basterd wakes up and about 30 to 45min later, the incubating alien bursts from his chest. Then it takes another hour or two for it to grow and start feeding which results from it reaching full size or somewhere near it. And then it rampages starts killing people.

WELL! It seems that facehuggers of the past (Remember this it somewhat of a prequel) obvioulsy do things a bit quicker or so the pacing of the film would allow us to believe. (Another thing us writers have to be reminded of) Okay, a small group of people get trapped in the 'Sacrificial Chamber' and facehuggers get them. Weeeeeeell, the pacing of the movie leads us to believe that after 5-8 minutes later the facehugger dies and the alien is incubating in the host. THEN..... 3-5 minutes later, they burst out. THEEEEEEEEN... 5-8 minutes later they reach adult size. Now within the time of the movie as if we were in it, it may have been longer for all of this to have taken place, but Paul Anderson says, "NO WAY!" and edits the pacing so that the aliens reach adulthood in the span of 12-15 min. *shakes head in dissapointment*

5. The 3 Preadators aren't that bad ass collectively. Okay, they arrive at the whaling station and kill the workers on the surface then string them up. Nice that it was done cause no one else was going to do it.tongue Then they go inside the temple and......... well, the clips that most have us have seen of them are basically all they do in the film.

First, the clip that shows the alien skewering the Predator with the blades on his arms is pretty much all that we see of him in action. So he was like an old WWF 'jobber' who made the talent look good.

Now the second clip that shows the Big heavy Predator fighting the alien doesn't show the entire fight. The clip is pieced together from snippets of the actual fight, but although it doesn't show who wins, I'll tell you that when I saw the whole fight, I was mad ass hell!!!! I liked that Predator cause he was hardcore, but like what happened to Darth Maul in SW:E1, he get's screwed, I think. I'll go so far say that Predators in general are hardcore to take on Aliens head on, but even Predators have to go down. But this Predator should have won IMHO! So one Alien kills two Predators. DAMN!

I'll get to the third Predator later!wink

6. The Alien queen was too fucking huge! In Aliens, the queen was hald the size of the one in the movie, but this one moved around like she was on speed. I know CGI technology has advanced since Aliens, but really!

What was good about it:

1. Saana's character was good and like I said, she did a good job.

2. The sets were friggin awesome. The temple wasn't done in CGI, but done with models and clever old school shooting tricks. Good mark for anderson on that. He get's a !

3. The directon was better than I thought it would be. After seeing the b.s. that was Resident Evil, I expected utter shittyness, but he did a decent job. Handerson gets another !

4. NO EAR BUSTING MUSIC THAT DOESN'T BELONG IN THE MOVIE!!! Going back to RE, the story was turned upside down and he threw in needles 'stingers' and music that really didn't add anything to the movie. With AvP, he uses orchestrated music that works well and adds to the tone of the film. Anderson gets another !

5. THE THIRD PREDATOR WAS BADASS!! Now, realizing that these Predators considered to be young ones, he was sweet! I'm not going to say what happens to him midway through the film, but it all comes full circle at the end of the movie after he dies.

Sanna's character actually bails him out be killing an Alien and as if he saw her "warrior's" spirit or will to survive, teams up with her for the rest of the fiml. Now you might say WTF, but how it's done isn't utter b.s. Of course Anderson had to bring in an element from the PC games, so after they come to an agreement that surviving together might be a good thing, about 6 Aliens show up at the end of a cooridor. Then, just like in the games, you see through his visor the Predator targeting them and blowing them away with his arm cannon. Okay, I didn't mind that and it was cool since I'm working on AvP2 for the PC.

He took on the queen and fought brave enough. When the queen was just about to kiil Sanna's character, he does a sick technique where he spun in the air and imbedded his spear in the side of her head. The camera angle of it was done well cause he came out of nowhere after getting knocked out for a spell.

After he dies, the Predator ship shows up and Preadtors take his body on the ship. The leader of this particular hunting clan, obviously seen how the two of them took care of the queen, gave Saana a badass hunting staff, ala Danna Glover in Predator 2. They obvioulsy reguard such survival as something to be respected, i dunno.

Overall, the movie is lackluster, but not terrible! I think if all that was wrong with it was addressed, it would have been much better, but it is what it is I suppose. The end where the thrid Predator's body was in repose offers opportunities for a sequel and again ties in another element from the Avp PC games. Of course that all depends on whether it is successfull at the box office.

So to the questino that you all are asking. "Should I see AvP?" Weeeeeeeell.... I say if you have a choice between Collateral and Avp, Collateral is your movie, but if you have 2 hrs to waste event hough you know the movie is flawed, then you might wanna consider AvP. But I wouldn't rush out to see it, but I'd see ith eventually though. I would say that it's DVD worthy cause of all the potential extra stuff.

Grade: C It's not as bad as I expected it to be, but it could have been much better. However, there are some parts that work and they help it not to get a C- rating, of which I was going to give it half way through.

I found a way to sneak in and see it. I just got home from it.

To tell you the truth..

I liked it. I thought it was well done. You can def. tell its PG-13 though. I thought going in all I would think about is the rating but when the aliens and Predators are fighting I totally forgot.

After reading those reviews I've come to the conclusion that those reviewers are a bunch of sniveling fanboys that expected the horror equivelent of Shakespeare or something. God damn, it's just a movie.

Here's AVP in a nutshell from an un-biased perspective: Some forgivable cheesy parts, still really violent for a PG-13, some really cool scenes between the Aliens and the Predators, and overall very entertaining. It's worth the price of a ticket. I'm getting it the second it comes out on DVD.

First off, I'm no fan boy as you would call me. Second, I was being more analytical based on my prefered tastes and story wise. I'm just someone who tends to favor some continuity and detailed stories when I see a film.

I went to the midnight showing and everyone in the theatre was cheering and loving all the fighting scenes. I loved this movie and will also buy it when it comes out on DVD right away. Maybe you guys watched a different movie or something but almost all 3 theatres were sold out at my theatre. This is a 9/10 for sure.

heres wat sum critics had to say...

TV Guide / Maitland McDonagh:
A reductive spook show in which a bunch of puny humans get chased around by scary monsters.

Variety / Dennis Harvey:
The thing-a-ma-jigs have it out with the whatch-a-ma-call-its -- as several humans scurry and scream between -- in Alien Vs. Predator, the kind of two-for-one dogfight (last repped by "Freddy Vs. Jason") that usually does more to bury a franchise than revive it.

Chicago Tribune / Michael Wilmington:
It's a murky, empty-headed dive into the depths of the Antarctic and the heart of monster movie cliches that leaves you praying for most of the cast to get killed off fast, to put them (and us) out of our misery.

Film Threat / Pete Vonder Haar:
It will end up frustrating fans of both movie franchises enough to make them wish someone more competent was in charge.

Slate / David Edelstein:
The first 45 minutes or so is stupefying--flat, disjointed, missing all human connective tissue.

ill get sum more later

......................I AM SPEECHLESS.
I literally have nothing to say! I can't beleieve it! The only massacre I saw was the killing of both franchise! The only "versus" I saw was Paul Anderson vs Alien AND Predator and guess what?.......... ....Paulie won!

I'll admit right now, the movie was half-decent but it did not meet the expected requirments of a Alien/Predator movie. The only enjoyment in theater was the fight scenes after all it is "Alien VS Predator". Fans were cheering for their fav but it came down and it came down hard! I guess now everybody is now aware of the infamous Predator joining Sanaa scene. Since when is Predator a good guy. I mean he could've ignored her at that moment but would've come back for her later on instead of turning to her side and actually fighting with her. The attacks that both Alien and Predator pull are amazing but even tis can't save this movie. The Predators got REALLY soft, how u ask? Well, like two predators who rewarded a human with their weapons........A HUMAN! If u ask me the Predators are not Predators but rather Protectors! But I don't blame them..... .....I blame Paul Anderson! He should stay from either the Alien and Predator franchise. He ruined the Predators and made them very soft! He ruined the original breeding time for Aliens! the only thing he did right was the fight sequences! But I thanked God right after I walked out that Paul didn't give the Predators a pink skirt and pigtails.

CLOSING COMMENTS

This movie was semi! Remember the tagline: "Whoever wins.......we lose" well that idea is thrown out the window halfway through the movie! It more like: "If the Aliens win......we're screwed" and "If the Predators win......free badass weapons and smoothies for everybody!"
I'm not the kind of guy who writes angry posts like these on forums in fact I'm very passive and calm but this movie is P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C! As a movie-goer I tolerated it(loved the fight sequences) but as a fan of both Alien and Predator
I AM DISGUSTED! 'Nuff said.

Yes, that the reason why Predator 1 was way better. Point is that this movie was a disaster , maybe giving a weapon to a human is not new but Paul Anderson shouldn't have brought it back.

Well, I won't disagree that Predator 1 was better. Haven't seen AVP yet. Still debating on wether or not to wait for DVD. BTW KingKabal, I hope my last post didn't sound too sarcarstic. I wasn't making fun or anything.
