I like training and evolving Pokemon, so I was never really a fan of Legendaries that you just find already on level 50 or 70 or whatever.
I rarely like starters aside from the water types.
And I tend to boot the rest of the original 150 because I don't want to just give them a free pass because they've had more exposure.
I do like many of the Pokemon that don't fall into the categories you mentioned. None of my favorite Gen 2s have come up yet, though, and given that I haven't played much of anything since Gen 2, those are the ones I know best and probably will immune, other than a select few. When it comes down to it, I vote for who I like, and I have my reasons for liking them. I assure you, I'm not a nostalgia freak when it comes to Pokemon. I simply stopped playing shortly after picking up Ruby because I didn't like the game and the new Pokemon in it, and then Gens 4 and 5 didn't interest me because I was playing many other games at the time... therefore the first two generations are really all I know. The rest I've simply seen through what little experience I have with Pokemon Colosseum, surfing Smogon, watching Let's Plays, or whatever.
As for your reasons, I won't criticize. I will say however that you can train legendaries just like any other Pokemon, the only difference being no evolving. And again, for me, pushing the original 151 through isn't giving them a free pass. I do it because I like their designs, gameplay, their portrayal in the anime and/or manga, etc.
Anyway, I don't want to wreck the game with debating, as I feel that I've already said far too much to answer your question.
