There's a patch you need. It can be found on TheSims web-site or you can buy any of the expansion packs from Unleashed on.

The description of the patch doesn't say anything about this problem, but I had the exact same problems with my deluxe edition until I downloaded it.

Until you get the patch try starting the game by clicking on a shortcut rather than using the blue window that appears on autostart.
