The Top 10 Characters of Fighting Games - Completely Biased? (Long Post)
The Top 10 Characters of Fighting Games - Completely Biased? (Long Post)
Whenever I come across Top 10 lists for fighting game characters (and there are a lot of them), I often find them to be structured by either popularity, nostalgia, or both.
It bothers me greatly that the same few characters are always placed in these lists despite the lack of there being any notable reason for their constant inclusion, or for being included in the first place, besides being a popular character.
Thus, I've decided to try my hand at a Top 10 list of my own, one that I hope is a display of merit rather than popularity or favoritism. Keep in mind, this list is ultimately a matter of opinion.
In descending order:
10. Captain Falcon (Super Smash Bros.)
Captain Falcon's significance as a fighting game character hails especially when one considers his origin: a racing game. As someone who has never before been in a combative state, Captain Falcon proves how well genres can shift for a single entity. His superior combat system and powerhouse special moves make this speed king a force to be reckoned with.
9. Princess Kitana (Mortal Kombat)
Personally, I also find her to be one of the most underrated fighting game characters, even despite her legacy. Princess Kitana marks the accomplishment of storytelling in a fighting game, being presented as one of the most complex and sympathetic characters of the sort. Her trademark weapons have given her a strong fighting prowess throughout the series, and her overall existence will always make her a character worth having in a Mortal Kombat game.
8. Yoshimitsu (Tekken/Soulcalibur)
Proof that two is better than one, on many levels. Yoshimitsu's gand appearance and moveset led to his division into two major fighting game franchises, Tekken and Soulcalibur, as what are two (or three) characters. Throughout his nearly 20-year run, his fighting style has grown into one of the most superior styles of both franchises, and he boasts the blessing of never wearing the same thing twice, his costumes ever-changing. Yoshimitsu's presence as a fighting game character stills remains a joy to behold.
7. Orchid (Killer Instinct)
While originally was going to give this spot to Spinal, another great character, I had to remind myself of the realism of things and avoid favoritism. Easily one of the most iconic women in fighting games, Orchid is one of the few majorly popular characters with actual merit. In a game full of bulky, brawny men, Orchid proves that women still reign supreme. Her brilliant and beautiful display of moves make her a deadly warrior, so deadly the series' leading song was made in her honor. Orchid truly gives new meaning to the phrase. "if looks could kill."
6. Testament (Guilty Gear)
A prime example of how beautiful androgyny can be, Testament's appearance alone is a display of his capability. Wielding a scythe nearly the size of himself, he slays his opponents with ease. His special attacks are wondrous to behold, and all throughout he remains within his sleek, calm demeanor. Testament may be prone to ridicule by gamers for his costume, but he always gains the last laugh.
5. Isabella Valentine (Soulcalibur)
Isabella Valentine, or Ivy for short, is a clear example of "She's slutty and it's okay." While the stigma of video game women still exists to this day, Isabella Valentine dispels the connotation with her highly memorable moveset. Initially being the only original new character in her debuting game, she grew into a hallmark character of the series, and to this day remains of the most superior women in the fighting game genre.
4. Iori Yagami (King of Fighters)
While I personally care not for him or the series he belongs, Iori has received critical acclaim as a character of the King of Fighters series. He is praised for his speedy moves and highly destructive combos, neither of which can be learned easily. Truly, he deserves the title of a character worth mastering.
3. Hsien-Ko (Darkstalkers)
Sexy Morrigan and adorable Felicia may shine bright, but behind them stands a woman of a great hidden arsenal, Hsien-Ko. Energetically controlled by her sister Mei-Ling, Hsien-Ko is an unstoppable force with more weapons that one can remember. She moves ever-so-strangely and attacks with shocking and clever movement. Truly, this jiang shi desrves just as much notoriety as the leading ladies of the Darkstalkers series.
2. Kenshi (Mortal Kombat)
One of the only two iconic Mortal Kombat characters to have debuted after the MK3 era, Kenshi a powerful display of a video game character done right. In the most unlikely of scenarios, Kenshi bears the position of one of the most generic entities in both gaming and fiction in general, a samurai. Yet, he appears and moves in a way that makes him look as though the samurai was a completely new idea. Unmatched by his swordsmanship and telekinetic powers, Kenshi stands as an extremely astonishing character, one to be around for years to come.
1. Voldo (Soulcalibur)
What it means to be original, Voldo truly is a being no one can deny exists. What he lacks in speech he makes up for in his superhuman combative nature. His costumes are forever a shocking yet immaculate sight, while his many weapons are almost as sight-worthy as his costumes. Voldo's supremely unique and unprecedented fighting style, joined with his great appearance and beautiful loyalty, truly leads me to believe he his deserving of being called the greatest fighting game character of all time.
Feel free to discuss my list, and please share your own views of who is among the best of fighting game characters.

If anybody wants to post pictures of the characters listed feel free. later I'll post my thoughts on your guys lists.
10. Rose from Street Fighter. Her unique moves and magic give this character a mysterious vibe. She may not be 1 of my favorite Street Fighter characters but how this character is played in the anime and in games she is a force to be reckoned with.
9. Kula Diamond from King Of Fighters. Even though she's 1 of my favorite characters in the series she earns a spot on my list. The way she walks, dashes is very elegant. She skates her way toward the opponent sending a barrage of various ice attacks. She's fast but very cute. She is a weapon but that does not stop the way she lives her life.
8. Ryu Hayabusa from Dead Or Alive. He is a true ninja in every sense of the word. he may not be the most creative design but his story is deep and imaginative. he is used quite heavily in the tournament scene for his amazing throws and off the wall attacks. again he is not 1 of my favorite characters but I respect what he can do and what he does in terms of story.
7. Venom from Guilty Gear. his move set is complex, his look is creative and his fighting style is zany. he uses his pool stick in a variety of ways and that fact he can turn you into a pool ball just makes him 1 more reason why he is on my list.
6. Duck King from Fatal Fury. He is 1 of my fav but this does effect why he is on my list. He has a energetic personality with a sidekick of a chick that is always with him. He does break dancing in his moves. He is colorful but deadly. He for me is the eddy of Tekken but in Fatal Fury series.
5. Tira from Soul Calibur. Her weird weapon and off the wall personality is the reason why she is on my list. She's the joker of SC. Although she is another 1 of my fav she doesn't get as much hype as the rest of the cast. To me she is what made SC3 different from the previous installments.
4. Yoshimitsu from Tekken. My number 1 fav until Tekken 3. He has had many looks over the years. From Tekken to Soul Calibur. He is the original samurai in my eyes. His crazy moves like slap you silly and poison mist makes for fun matches. He fly's as well. Among the fighting game community he is well received.
3. Shuma - Gorath from Marvel Vs Capcom is as unique as they come. his animations and his fighting style is strange. I hardly ever play as him but he very underrated and needs more love.
2. Hauzer from Red Earth. He or she is a dinosaur. It's awkward fighting with him or against him. He has an interesting move set and a lot of people prob never heard of him so that's all the more reason why he made my list. Plus who doesn't like dinosaurs.
1. Carl Clover From BlazBlue. He is a young boy that his sister is a marionette. He is my number 1 spot because he's like no other character I've ever played before. I don't play as him much but his style is so complex and precise it's hard to use him and also fight against. it's like fighting with a team but it's not always to your liking. prob not very well know either.
This is the most biased list I could come up with. Let me know what you guys think of my list and I'll let you know what I thought about your lists as well.

This is the most biased list I could come up with. Let me know what you guys think of my list and I'll let you know what I thought about your lists as well.
I'm starting to think people are missing the point of this thread.
I made this thread to combat the idea of having a Top 10 be filled with favorites, but that's what people are doing. It defeats the purpose of what I'm talking about.
My list is not about who I like or who I think is cool. It's about who I feel is truly deserving of recognition. Hell, I hate Iori Yagami, but I would be a fool to deny his excellence as a character. That is why I put him on my list, not because I like him.
What I am challenging everyone to do is try to look beyond their favorites, or at least very least go deep into why that character is your favorite. Voldo happens to be my favorite video game character, but when I disect him and see what it is that makes me love him, I see how valueable he really is. Voldo's value goes far beyond my love for him as a character. He genuinely is a great character, whether I like him or not, just like Iori.
Do not allow favoritism to dictate your list. Use merit and merit alone. That is what this thread is about.

How is Voldo the best fighting game character of all-time? What's his merit? That he dresses like a freak, and that he bends and twists in different ways? He's not important to the overall Soul Calibur story at all.
Yoshimitsu could just as easily be #1 by those standards.

Your view that he dresses like a freak does not hinder his merit.
It is Voldo's unprecedented existence, his originality, that earns him his merit. Never before has such as character been seen, and never again will it ever be seen. His existence is unmatched by any other character there is in the genre, or most video games for that matter.
And for the record, Voldo is highly valueable to the Soulcalibur story, as he is the character who paves the path to Soul Edge. It is why Nightmare was able to influence him as easily as he did. Voldo knows the way to Soul Edge. He led himself right into Nightmare's grasp.
In the end, as I stated in my initial post (which I am assuming you didn't even read), my list is ultimately a matter of opinion.

Riyakou the thing about my list it's nothing like my actual favorite lists. On the list i listed not 1 character would be on my top 10 lists for male or female characters. I thought i kinda posted good reasons for the list i posted.
My actual male favorites are.
1. Lord Raptor from Darkstalkers.
2. Testament from Guilty Gear.
3. Scorpion from Mortal Kombat.
4. Hwoarang from Tekken.
5. Remy from Street Fighter.
6. Spinal From Killer Instinct.
7. Venom from Marvel vs Capcom.
8. Ash Crimson from King Of Fighters.
9. Basara from Samurai Showdown.
10. Maxi from Soul Calibur.
For female top 10 fav are.
1. Morrigan from Darkstalkers.
2. Ibuki from Street Fighter.
3. Mai Shiranuai from King Of Fighters.
4. Jam from Guilty Gear.
5. Kasumi from Dead Or Alive.
6.Taki from Soul Calibur.
7. Zafina from Tekken.
8. Ihora from Samurai Showdown.
9. Psylocke From Marvel Vs Capcom.
10. Litchi from BlazBlue.
None of the characters i listed are on my previous list so it wasn't like i was making a top to lists of my fav when the previous characters i play hardly or i play frequently.
Mojo i dig Juri to she's an awsome character. The fact you put Tung from Fatal Fury speaks as a highly unsed character that is quite enjoyable.
Riyakou the fact is Hsien - Ko does need more popularity. Captain Falcon is highly used among the community of Smash Bros. You even listed that you had few fav characters on your list even though your trying to be biased. Every list has atleast 1 fav theres just no way around it.

So because he's the first male character that looks like a sex slave, his existence is unprecedented? And like I said, Yoshimitsu is just like him. Always changes appearance, is defined by his unorthodox fighting style, and has been in every game in his respective series. Yoshimitsu is also extremely loyal to his Manji Clan. So how is Voldo ahead of him? Only because Voldo wears the most ridiculous outfits.
Another thing, how is Captain Falcon on the list when Sweet Tooth from PS All-Stars could be on there for the exact same reason? Sweet Tooth had never stepped outside the truck either. I'd say Superbot was pretty inventive with his moveset. While it wasn't a racing game, it's still the principle of him never ever being in a fighting game before.
Lastly, of course I understand it's your opinion. But I'm just trying to further understand your reasoning behind some of these choices. I am kind of curious how there's no Street Fighter characters as well. I know SF isn't really known for it's story but it does have some good characters. Maybe I'll make my own top 10 characters later.

It seems your disapproval of Voldo being on my list, or any list, stems from your taking a disliking to the costumes he wears.
That's completely fine, but I can't help but feel it seems a bit unfair. Nevertheless, I cannot deny you your viewpoint.
As for Street Fighter, I had actually originally intended to include Vega in my list, but I ultimately opted him out. Indeed there are quite a few amazing characters in the Street Fighter series that are deserving of recognition, most recently C. Viper. For my list, I simply saw others I felt were more deserving.
But please, I encourage you to post a list of your own. I would definitely love for you and many others to show characters you feel have the merit to be called the greatest fighting game characters of all time. I am highly fond of these kinds of lists, so I love seeing the views and opinions of others in these aspects. Seriously, I'm not being sarcastic. lol I anticipate your list.

Alright so I have an idea of what my list will look like, but before I finalize I'd like to know what you consider merit? Obviously creativity and originality are big, but are there other factors such as story relevance, character development, etc?

What I consider merit may not be what you consider merit.
All I truly ask is that the list not be dictated by favoritism or popularity. Seek out characters you feel are great in their own right.
Riyakou man you're being a bit difficult about this. You want a thread about "top 10 best fighters" but only if it meets some sort of ambiguous criteria to you. Unless you list categories it's all going to be subjective/popular/favorite characters.

I don't think it would be fair for me to ask you all to compose lists based on my idea of merit, and I am not comfortable doing so.
Each and every one of us has an idea of what makes a great character, so all we have to do seek out the characters who match that idea. As some of you have shown, my ideals are much different from yours. Just take a look at a character you personally consider great, and ask yourself what it is about him/her that makes him/her great.
I am more than positive that each and every one of us is capable of forming a Top 10 list that isn't dictated by popularity or favoritism. Even if you choose a character who is hugely popular, like Scorpion, or is among your favorite characters, dig deep into the character to see just why you feel he/she is of great merit.
I'm sorry if I am not being of more help, but this is as best as I can be.
That's my point. Your version "of merit" may differ from mine and is pretty vague. For example your choice of Testament sounds like he was chosen because of his androgynous aesthetic design. Apparently to you that "has merit" but that's just a subjective favorite preference. If you wanted discussion on"best of" based on some sort of criteria then you need to establish that criteria or at least break the list into categories.

It honestly should not be this difficult for you to figure out which characters you feel possess great merit.
I should not have to establish a list of criteria for you to follow. If you cannot decide on your own, you might as well not voice your part in the discussion. I apologize if these words are offensive or insulting, but I am only being honest. You should be able to see for yourself who you feel is or isn't deserving of recognition.

I apologize if these words are offensive or insulting, but I am only being honest. You should be able to see for yourself who you feel is or isn't deserving of recognition.
Man I DID post a list which you dismissed as being too subjective. You apparently don't seem to realize that "has merit" without any context other than "what I feel has merit" is the very definition of subjective. So, you claim you only want people to contribute how they see fit but only if the characters are "worthy of recognition." According to who? You apparently.
I literally disagree with the vast majority of your selections as examples of "the best" but I don't dismiss your list because it's based on why you personally feel a character has merit. Yet when WE DO THE SAME THING apparently we're doing it wrong. Then you want to tell me that I"M the one who's confused here!?!

So be objective but make a list based on our personal opinion on what warrants merit.

Then by all means challenge my list by posting your own, and I am not saying this in any negative fashion. I've been asking for this since I started this thread.
The only reason I felt disenchanted with the list you have is because it contained too many statements of your love for the characters, which made me to believe they were added because you liked them and not for their merit. If I am wrong, I encourage you to inform me, as acidslayer had.
Again, and for anyone who has yet to post a list, all I request is that the list not be dictated by popularity of favoritism. That is the basis of the entire thread.
And please, if not anything else, remember that in the end all of these lists are based on personal opinion. In no way am I declaring that my list is of an absolute truth.
Their merit as what man? You mean the reason I like them? That's all you said in yours! Captain Falcon is from a racing game and you like that so he has merit. Testament is androgynous and you like that so he has merit. Yoshimitsu and Voldo have wild ass costumes and you like that so they have merit. Those are things that you find memorable. I did the same exact thing except I wrote in first-person used the words "I feel/like/love" and you didn't. But fine...I'll elaborate more and rewrite from a more neutral 3rd-person perspective. Actually no I won't, this has already proved to be a waste of my time.

It kinda bothers me how upset you seem to be from this, as it ultimately isn't that big of a deal.
However, I do apologize as it was not my intention to upset you, and if you feel this is no longer worth investing time in, I completely respect that.
... This thread makes me feel like I need to play more fighting games. I really can't throw anything down in here except for the characters I know but I don't think the kind of list that should be in here should consist characters from just Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter and Soul Calibur.

Well you played Smash Bros, and there's a character on someone's list. So brawlers count. That means you could have Smash, PS All-Stars, and even Power Stone.
Hell, even Primal Rage qualifies. As bad as everyone says it is, it's characters are surprisingly good.
