When I heard Nirvana’s piece [Smells Like Teen Spirit] I had never heard of the band before. I was in Sweden in the outback freezing my ass off in the fall. I wasn’t keeping up on stuff, and I saw their band on MTV up there and immediately I was going, ‘I’ve got to write this down.’ That melody was just something that said, ‘Take me to the piano.’”
”I was playing a festival in Germany a few years ago right after I had done the Smells Like Teen Spirit cover. This is one of those festivals where the people drink gallons of German beer three days straight. I played on the second day and they were already gone. Many boys proceeded to yell ‘Schnell, you fucking slut’ as I was playing my piano. I turned to them and said, ‘Look, you motherfuckers, synchronize your watches because I’m here until the big hand gets on the 12. So unless you blow me off the stage with a rifle, suffer.’ And I did the longest version of Teen Spirit anyone’s ever done, like 22 minutes, and walked off the stage, pride intact, graciously ass-saved.” [Spin – March 1995]
”I did a tribute to Kurt Cobain with ‘Teen Spirit’ and ‘American Pie’ this night in Dublin because ‘American Pie’ is what I heard over and over in my head the night he killed himself. I played it to 2,500 kids: it started like a whisper, and then in perfect pitch, in perfect rhythm, very softly, they all sang ‘American Pie’ with me. None of us in the crew had ever experienced anything like it....
I just felt like I knew him. I miss him as a musician. It’s just painful when you see someone who had so much to give - especially musically - gone. We’ve lost quite a significant voice for this generation.” [Illinois Entertainer – August 1994]
“When I heard that song for the first time, I was very moved by it. The idea that boys also knew this kind of pain! Like a sort of homage I recorded a version of that song as well.” [Oor (Dutch, “Ear”) – January 29, 1994]

I am a happy well adjusted emotinally disturbed person, and for some reason all the raiden sprites keep staring at me I mean it tell them to stop, they are scaring me hides
my friend pred gave me this one, and the avvy that goes with it, but I love the ones flameshang and darkryder gave me too, so expect a cycle of these three folks
1. nirvana is grunge, not metal first of all, just wanted to adress that
2. general rule, its rare that a remake of a song is as good as the orginal, and tori amos is a pop singer, the opposite of what kurt korbain was, think about it
Now, I'm downloading a techno and an acoustic version of the song, my impressions later on tonight.

well Im pretty heavy into music and Ive never heard of it so... Not good prolly.
Just because uve never heard of it, means it wont be good?
Seriously, have a word with urself.
Tori Amos has an amazin voice, and "Smells like teen spirit" is a great song....No complaints here
I suggest you check out "Cornflake Girl"
The techno version is fun and I ain't easy on techno.

Why don't you have a seat?

the problem lies in these facts though
1. nirvana is grunge, not metal first of all, just wanted to adress that
2. general rule, its rare that a remake of a song is as good as the orginal, and tori amos is a pop singer, the opposite of what kurt korbain was, think about it
Thank you!

now I am not saying amos is bad singer or anything, nor am I saying there arn't good remakes, hell I liked the metallica version of turn the page by bob seger (and I have heard both)
but.... most remakes do suck, like it or not they do, or at least purist hate them
oh and johnny cash = god, so he doesn't count in this place
now admittly I haven't heard the song but honeslty, unless she is gonna parody it like weird al, how the hell is she gonna sing it when you can't even understand half the words, which is part of the allure to the song in the first place, and sometimes a song done in a different style then it was orginally done, it wrecks the song
example, a techno pop group tried to do bohminan rapsody, and it sucked, it wasn't operatic and they skipped a part, they butchered it so no a remake may or may not be good and to be honest I doubt this one is good sorry but that is how I feel

Tori prounces every word perfectly.
the allure of the song is that you can't understand all the words right off the bat

the purists are gonna hate it then

Are you trying to actually say that what attracts someone to the song is that they have no idea whats been said?
What makes a song good is [partly] that you can understand it, not vocally, but mentally and emotionally..

you are not getting it, the song was loved for what it was, that is what I am saying, and usually a remake is hated, good or not, because its not the same, that is what I am warning about

You're letting the sterotype of cover songs to cloud your judgement. If a song moves you in a way that you experince the song's emotional message, it will show on the song. Give the song a chance. That's all I'm asking.
one more time: I am not saying if I like the song or not, honestly I am one of the few people that didn't like to orginal that much, so chill. now I avoid pop right now, I got soured to it by britney spears sorry, but,.. I am telling you that there are people out there that, for some reason, feel the orginal songs are ALWAYS better then the remakes, that is what I am saying
I am not one of those people ok, I am saying something here for the third time, here let me explain.....
limp bizkit did a remake of behind blue eyes, and it got panned a lot, but guess what, I liked it, alot, I thought it was cool, and I hate limp bizkit, but there where people out there so closed minded that they barely gave it half a chance
now I might download the song later and listen to it, since I never heard it, but I don't like tori, I dont like bubble gum pop (that is what she is) so I can't promise anything, but I am not saying its gonna suck, but don't say I am clouded because I say something, read more carefully, I am warning you there are people out there that will say "this sucks" no matter what ok, I am not one of them, I don't know if the song sucks or not ok!
Not that anyone probably has heard it, but The Cruxshadows covered Eurythmics' track "Here Comes The Rain Again" and it's, in my opinion, better than the original is. No one should really rule out a cover song before they give it a chance. I never see anyone complaining so much when a movie is remade based on the original; it's the same concept really.
Anyway, this is semi-related I guess since it's about Tori Amos... I preordered the CD "Where's Neil Where You Need Him?", which is a tribute album for the writer Neil Gaiman. Tori has an exclusive track on here along with other bands I like, which ironically includes the band I just mentioned in my previous paragraph. I've never been that big of a fan of hers, but maybe this will be something good.
