There are three rules for doing scientific research. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.
Can you remember the first time you saw the terms '1337', 'w00t' or 'noob' (or any other variant of these terms) being used? Where was it, and who used them? I'm especially interested in the origin of the words 'w00t' and 'noob'.
Thanks,
VQ

No special name edited MK signature, but hey.... I don't give a f00k.
Noob, I don't remember. I am sure I heard it when I was playing some game online. And Ive played countless games online, so I don't remember. Same goes for pwnage, and ownage.
w00t I once heard in an MSN conversation. It was back in 2001 I think, maybe 2000. I was playing Mech Warrior 4 intensively and I was in a clan. It was a clan chat. Someone started the chat with w00t.

Damn u busted me...lol The first time I seen 1337 was on the online Star Wars game I have...w00t and n00b also...I used to get sick of, actually still get sick of, people who think they are 'kings of the internet' and call other people noobs.

EVAs
n00b, noob, newb: someone who is new to something, or someone who acts, at one point, like they're new. p1-"what does tt mean?" p2-"lol newb"
pwn: own, said like "sweet" (as in 'that's sweet', 'that pwn's')
pwned: owned, as in "I pwned him", pretty much the same as "I owned him", so used like that
h8: hate, as in "omg the hate around here". If someone says "I h8 u", its nothing like "I hate you". h8 refers to a feeling of faked dislike of someone, or to belittle actual hateful comments: p1-"you really suck" p2-"wow the h8"
<3: love, as in "love, no(t) hate", "<3 ok?". Not the same as love, <3 is pretty much opposite to h8, in the same context.
h4x0r: haxxor, hacker, like "you did something which should not be allowed. person1-"I just killed p2" p2-"he's a haxxor".
woot, w00t, WoOT: not unlike whooping sounds of any sort, used to indicate happiness, esp. when beating something, like the opposing team (not usually used against a single person)
kern: to kern someone. To lead cows to them while they are afk, resulting in death.
T.T, t.t, tt: "I'm sad, but not really, so don't worry" or "That's sad."
gg: good game, sometimes people say it after a duel or even after a flamewar on the forums.
gd: good duel, used to congratulate each other after a duel.
gosu: cool. "That's a gosu weapon!" That's a cool/awesome weapon!
O.o, O_O: Surprise or in awe of something.

}¿?}: which I just made up it means Joe kick ass!!
but pwnage is Very stu[id just dubass played it off, it's really just a typo and then it developed into assmonkey heaven...
The first time i heard about the term "newbie" was actually a long time ago when i was a child. I remember when my older cousins would teach me things in video games, or sports, they would say "Daves a newbie at this". So thats been with me for a while, heh.
The first time i saw "n00b" and "noob" was on the message boards a few years ago. I think i remember seeing it on the first message board i ever went to, which is the "F13TH message board". IMO its a very annoying word, and it kind of annoys me when people call newbies that who didnt even do anything, or are just asking a simple question that they didnt know. You probably wouldnt see me calling someone a n00b. A n00b is way different than a newb, yet people call newbs n00bs. Weird.
As for 1337, it looks awfully familiar. I either saw it on a message board years ago, or someone mentioned it to me in person, but i just forget.

I also learnt today that "l33t" and the like is as old as the '80s and comes from old BBS.
I only use 1337 in ironic contexts but I do use über a lot; possibly because I'm also fluent in German but then again I think über is a way cooler word than "mega" or "super".
BTW Thanks for the information I didn't have yet, guys.
Cheers,
VQ
The word 'noob' also originated from the hacker scene, especially in phreaking/hacking readings.
The words 'pwn' and 'ownage' originates from gamers, the same goes for the word 'w00t'/'woot'.
This, according to my beliefs/readings.

Alpha_Q_Up Wrote: I thought n00b was for this site only becuase of NOOB saibot, so instead of saying newbs(short for newbies) you guys said n00bs. |
I thought the same thing; with message boards I've used in the past, I usually lost interest and stopped posting after a week or two, so I never saw "noob" or n00b" on other boards. I did see newbie quite often though. I never understood 1337 till I read what Nikodemus and Agilo said about it. I always thought pwned/pwnage was a typo, or mocking of a typo.

Then again, I am an elite according to MKS. But really, I think most people weigh the elite status with a grain of salt, lol.
