S_N987 here, eh ?

I was wondering if yours truly and ShingoEX are the only two people in the World who actually remember an old fighting game called Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer (Chojin Gakuen Goukaiza). It was released on the now-defunct NeoGeo system in late-1995, originally being an arcade game created by SNK (a "sequel" with 3-D backgrounds was made for the Playstation but I haven't seen any footage of it).
It was directed by Masami Obari, the guy who directed such Anime classics as "Fatal Fury : Legend of the Hungry Wolf", "Fatal Fury : The New Battle", "Fatal Fury : The Motion Picture" and "Voogie's Angels". Incidentally, Obari also made VFG into three 40-minute Anime episodes and a full-lenth Anime movie, "Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer : The Motion Picture". It had more Fan Service than a Dead or Alive convention.
The game itself was very good. You play one of 10 or so heroes who have to fight Ohga, the evil master of the Belnar Institute. He's responsible for provoking the earthquake that destoyed a large part of Japan and aims to use his powers to take over the World, as usual. The fighters all have these cyborg suits that grant them awesome powers, thanks to the "Kaiser Stones". The fighters are:
-Gowcaizer: The main hero. Bears a striking resemblance to Andy Bogard.
-Hell Stinger: A rock star with bat wings on his armor.
-Karin: A girl who uses a staff as a weapon. She can summon a cloud and make mini-copies of herself. Based on the "Monkey King" of Chinese mythology.
-Kyosuke Shingure: A fighter who uses a sacred wooden sword as a weapon. Can summon 3 demons, Kubira, Makora and Basara.
-Fudomaru: My personal favorite. Mild-mannered litterature professor by day, space-age Samurai by night. Can use many energy swords.
-Captain Atlantis: A Captain America lookalike.
-Brider: A vigilante whose armor and helmet make him look exactly like a Transformer or Gundam robot.
-Marion (pronounced "Mah-ree-onn"): A heavily-armed robot with 6 arms.
-Battle Master Shen Long: Your run-of-the-mill Golden-Aged Martial Arts master, However, he is evil.
-Shaia: The reason this game caught my eye in the first place ! wink She's this really sexy fighter who seems like the spitting image of Mai Shiranui ! Controls this little ball-shaped robot called Ballboy who can shoot lasers and hit enemies from a distance.
-Ohga: The evil master of the Belnar Institute.
-The Platonic Twins: Their backstory is WAAAY too bad-taste to write here (shame on you, Obari !), but all I can say is that they can fuse together to form this hideous, four-armed, ambiguous creature. Obviously not among the game's good ideas...
-??? Garustan ??? : Rumors of a secret character are still flying around, though chances are that he'll never see the light of day...

I first found out about it this summer. I went to a flea market and started looking through some really old gaming magazines. The ad for the game really caught my eye so I bought the mag (Electronic Gaming Monthly number 77, December 1995). It has an article on VFG.

Immediately when I heard that there's also an Anime of VFG, I serched for it from coast to coast, across the seven seas, far and wide...alright, I didn't and those are the lyrics from "Wasted Years" by Iron Maiden. But I did search for it and imagine my surprise to find it in a small video store in a mall ! Not only the movie, but the tree 4o-minute episodes as well ! I didn't see it yet, however...

I was very sad to notice that a real sequel was never made for thid game and it just seems to have been completely abandoned by SNK. I really think that a sequel would be awesome. I think I'm gonna write to SNK and urge them to make a sequel.

If any of you have any questions, go ahead. I can also post some images of the game or Anime if you want to.

Hmmm...For some reason, my images won't load. Go to google.com and put "voltage fighter gowcaizer" in the image search. You'll get the front-and-back box art. You'll also find screenshots and scans on animeart.com . Go to "series", "v" and select "Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer".
If you need help, send me a message.

Apparently, SNK just released a 3-D King of Fighters. It's been said that after the NeoGeo went kaput, SNK's financial situation isn't what it used to be.
I think they should make a 3-D Gowcaizer. It would totally kick ass. Imagine everyone's surprise, after more than 10 years of obscurity, VFG FINALLY gets a 3-D sequel. The gameplay would have to be excellent however, nobody wants to pay for another Strret Fighter or King of Fighters clone. They could add more fighters, more special moves, a better story and PRESTO ! They could sell it sight unseen.
Whaddaya think ?
