What action would you take if you saw a crime?
What action would you take if you saw a crime?
So, there's been a heck of a lot of talk about the Penn State rape charges since last week, and I've been reading a lot of comments on sites from people that think they would know what to do if they were ever faced with a rape scene right in front of them.
Majority, like 85% of the comments were more like, "If I saw the guy raping a kid, I'd stop him and beat the shit out of him."
Others were:
"I'd stop the crime and kill the bastard."
While there was a low majority that stated what I would love to say,
"It's funny how you guys sit here behind a screen and say you'd take action when you probably wouldn't even know what to do if you were to come across something so sinister to a man raping a child."
What would you guys really would do if you were face to face with a crime being committed? Would you actually take action and stop it? Call 911? Do nothing and walk away?
No one really wouldn't know what to do because it's that stunning. It just pins you frozen and you're stuck either watching it or walking away from it. And then you got an option to do there, would you call someone or just ignore it? Some people are that much of an asshole to let a crime slip away and let the victim be hopeless and defenseless. Others would take immediate action to help the victim out, others would immediately call the police.
Honestly, for me, I wouldn't know what to do. I mean, watching Law and Order SVU and seeing something in real life are two different scenarios. Sure I might be saying that I'll take action, even if I'm not that strong to fight against someone, but would I actually take the action into consideration? Or would I just run off somewhere, whip out my cell and call that there's a huge crime being committed at so-and-so.

I've never been faced with a crime such as rape, but when I was walking my dog one night I found a man shouting at a woman (I assume his wife). She was very nervous and crying, so I walked in a bit closer to hear what was going on. Seemed like usual stupid-husband-on-wife stuff until he said "don't make me beat you up, I never like hitting a woman!". When I heard that I walked up to them, and politely asked him to walk away. He ignored me and said it was none of my business, so I tried to make him see I was serious and not leaving until he did by shouting at him to get the fuck off right now.
At that point, a police officer saw us and walked over to take control of the situation.
Never saw them again but I hope the man never got close to the woman again.
The other time I saw a "crime" was when I was walking into the subway, and a guy clearly tries to pickpocket a man in front of me. The man didn't even notice and kept going, but I was like "what the fuck? in bright day light right in front of me?". I instantly started asking the guy what he was doing. He was a weird one, big fat and gross looking, but he looked like he had the brain of a nine year old. He got nervous as hell as soon as he realized I saw what happened.
He started saying he was lost and was trying to shrug me off and I kept getting in his face. I had no idea what to do really, I wasn't going to beat him up and there was no police around. I just knew I had to try to do something to keep the prick from trying to pickpocket anyone else that day so I guess I tried to intimidate him a bit. Nothing major though, I was so surprised I didn't really know what to say other than state the obvious.
I followed him for a bit to see if I'd catch him trying something sneaky again. He waited at a bus stop and eventually got on a bus full of old ladies. I bet the fucker stole something from them.

Although I would be surprised for the first few seconds. I would take as much action as I could to try and help that person. I think that we should try and help each other, especially when something like this is happening. I know actions speak louder than words, but the reality is that I would take action even if that meant risking my own neck.

I once bore witness to domestic abuse with my sister. We phoned the cops and they arrived and detained the assailant, but the dumb bitch (yeah, I said it) didn't press charges and took him back anyways. I can't stand when that happens.
As for the rape thing, luckily I have an iPhone 4.
If I'm not immediately noticed, I'd take cover, phone the police and use google maps to give my exact location. Then, I'd try and stop the assault myself until the authorities arrive, even if it meant beating the living shit out of them or vice versa. As an acquaintance to such victims, I couldn't stand by knowing it was going on. I've been stricken with fear many times, but when the action was called for I've risked it all.
Honestly, fucking honestly if I was trying to shower at my gym and I saw an elderly dude sodomizing a young boy, I would stop it right then and there.
But then I remember when I was like 16 and I went to my first college party at some frat in Newark and there was this girl. She was passed out outside and alone, and I was just like "wow, she must suck if that's her idea of fun, and where are her friends? She must really suck if her friends abandoned her like that." And then a large man came and picked her up and walked away and in my head I was just thinking "wow, she is literally going to be raped tonight." And I did nothing to stop that from happening. In my heart I can pretend to imagine that he was just bringing her somewhere safe, or he was actually one of her friends, but the whole situation just seemed to wrong and it happened so quickly.

I've been in situations of conflict and violence, I have responded accordingly each time, was I stunned and scared? Yes and I was one of people who said I would have helped the kid and call the police, I know what it's like to be a victim, so I would never stand idly by and watch as someone is raped, people can believe or not believe me, but that's my stance.
And those people who took no action were grown men, not kids or teens, I'm not going to give them any excuse for their half assed inaction..

I find it REALLY hard to believe that someone wouldnt stop a guy fucking a little boy.... really. Not like kick his ass... since its not that easy... but shout out, scare him off... call the cops...
Really, if you just look the other way when you know its happening... its fucked up. Even not checking when u suspect something like that is happening... I find it hard to believe your regular person wouldnt do anything about it....

No one ever wants to, but at least it would be nice for someone to try to help out someone who is in danger even if it's just calling the cops.

So, you'd let whoever is getting mugged, raped, about to be murdered get what's happening to them without even whipping out a cell phone and call the cops or gaining attention to others and have them all realize that there's a crime being committed?
Not trying to spark up anything, but that's kind of selfish don't you think? No one deserves to be a victim of a horrible crime, it would definitely help to put some effort into helping someone even if its just calling the cops.
Depends on the scale of the crime and the victim. If the victim is a girl of any kind in any kind of crime, I tend to jump in out of pure chivalry, if it's a small kid, I jump in due to the feeling of moral responsibility. If it's something I know I couldn't stop/help with (skinny 17 year old kid isn't much help in a fight) I look for help. If it's something like the Penn State incident mentioned above, I look for the heaviest thing around, sneak up behind the bastard and knock him out. Worst case scenario is he notices me, then what? Not like he can take on a kid with a weapon and a football player who no doubt at that point wants to cave the guy's skull in with his bare hands.

I'm not trying to sound like a badass here but I would smash his head into the ground. I won't just stand there while somebody gets raped. I might be in shock for a sec but I would definitely do something about it like KICK HIS ASS. Thats evil what he did. A guy like that deserves to be killed in my opinion. And if I seen him do that I would be the one to kill him. Piece of scum.

Exactly. I think any sensible person would do their best to stop something like that. I myself am a complete weakling but I probably would have jumped on the guy and called the cops. We as human beings can't just let this happen to one another.
I think a lot of you are gonna face serious legal repercussions from some very angry homosexual inter midget couples.
BOOM. I'm the most politically correct man in this thread. Gay men can love gay midgets too! You all are savages, savages I say!

I really doubt I could make a difference. Plus I don't really know the full story, I don't know why that guy is attacking another, he probably has a reason, last thing they need is me stepping in and making it worse. Sucks for the victim, but like I said, that's not my issue. If I want to help the world, there are other ways, leave the hero stuff to the cops. totheark Wrote:

You'd think right? Sadly though people love to "Troll the Trolls" 'round these parts.
As far as my response to "reporting a crime committed " it would depend on the type of crime and whether I'd get my ass shot or not for physically intervening. Regardless though I'd be calling the cops for a whole mess of reasons (I'm a mandated reporter through my vocation). Hell I'd even intervene if it was a psychological issue until the police arrived.
In the context of the Penn State coach I doubt you'd find anyone that wouldn't have intervened to a child being sexually assaulted.

Put on my costume and stop that crime!
On a serious note, I'd take action. I grew up watching/reading/playing things that have to do with hero, and I admit that I have kind of a hero complex.
Earlier this year I drove by a group of teens who were stomping on another teen who was on the ground. I hopped out of my car ran up with one of my unedged (aka sharp and dangerous) signs from work, and scared the kids off. Then made sure the other one was safe, told him to go home, then drove off.
I felt like a million bucks after helping that kid.

I may be sitting behind a screen, but I am also armed.
The law permits you to shoot people for the following:
Deadly force against you or others.
Robbery.
Home invasion.
Severe beatings that you think may turn lethal.
to stop a rape.
So if I saw a rape in progress and I had a clear shot, I would shoot the person. then call the cops.

Even if people wouldn't directly intervene, calling the cops and announcing it to the perp seems the least we could do, you don't have to be tough to make a difference, you don't even have to fight.
This not my problem mentality is scary to me and I'm not trying to be confrontational, but if we were being the victim of a crime, we would want someone to help us, save us from murder, rape, and domestic violence especially, this is not counting the huge slew of other abusive and violent acts like kidnapping.
There is not a single person who would say they wouldn't want to be saved from this stuff, unless they were suicidal.
