I work in a library and there is this woman who has been working there for 20 years. She acts as if she has authority even though she really doesn't have any stroke there. I feel like if I mess up, even a little bit, she talks down to me as if I'm a dog. I could react harsh but am afraid to get into trouble. Because this woman has seniority and because she also works at a school, my own library director might be afraid to do anything to her. What should I do?
I feel like I should say something as no-one else has. Not knowing your situation, I don't really know what to say other than stand your ground. That may not be the best advice, and I'm not telling you to sucker-punch her, but you should just tell it like it is. Explain to this woman that while she may have seniority, she has no real authority, and that her behavior is unacceptable in the workplace. Maybe tell her that her attitude may be the reason why she's been in the same job for 20 years, I don't know. Don't let this person walk all over you. Try to straighten it out with your director first, but if she doesn't do anything, I'd just say stand your ground.

I've been sick of this shit since the 80's. There has been some effort in recent years to affect positive change.
Not enough is being done to stop bullying. People need to actively be taught to not be ignorant assholes.
If only lightning would strike people when they're intentionally mean.
Or their digestive system would mess up, giving them literal diarrhea of the mouth to match the taste of their disgusting words. Taste them!
Be careful who you share your heart with. <3 Far too many people are only pretty on the outside.
Looking for quality people seems like sifting through cat litter. -_-*

Sorry.
Of course the correct answer is there should should be some kind of H.R.(Human Resources), Shop Steward, or Ombudsman of some kind to specifically handle workplace incidents, and interactions.
And that's assuming they aren't underfunded, understaffed, burned out, in with the bully or a bully themselves.
