Here's something i'm trying to find the answer to, being a spare-time developer and all, i'm trying to get ideas and such.
What makes a good site like this one? I'm sure that a huge part of it is the game itself being popular, the fan-base, the information, the people here... but what would be an eye-catching thing for a person working on a new site for a new game or movie or whatever?
I'm just curious, seems like there's not much interest in sites that are newly being developed, unless there's already a following or what not.

Go to Apple Trailers and go through some of the movies sites. I suggest "Taking Lives", "Kill Bill: Vol 2", "AvP", and "Dawn od the Dead". Take a look at how they relate to the movie. Look at the kinds of images and sounds that are used to bring each site to life.
Even without knowing much about the movie, you're given all of the particulars that would get you interested in going to see it. The use of navigation and tone of the site would suck you in and make you click around to see what it offers. Take a look at the Punisher site for example. Ont of the most in-depth movie sites I've seen in a long time. You're telling a story using abstract images and sounds that don't overtly explain averything about the movie, but they want you to experience the tone of the movie and give you a sence of the character.
In a way that goes with almost every movie site out there. Design plays a huge part in making someone come back to a place. Take MKOnline for example since we're here. Look at what it offers! Everything except the kitchen sink.
There's seven forums that caiters to a variety of subjects that everyone can enjoy. The theme selector is another little gem.
See, you have to look at a site that you enjoy and disect everything you see. What you like about it and what you don't. Is it design, navigation, or content that's bringing you back to that place or keeping you away? What do other people think about that particular site.
This is all research that is vital in assuring that a site is popular. Especially a site a big as this one.

Thanks for the reply on this :)
I'm just trying to get ideas of what people want to see... i'm making the site a more basic fan-site though, I seriously doubt I could make a site that looks and functions as slick as this place, heh.. i'm jut an amateur site designer looking to have a fun hobby on the side, i'm trying to develop a fan-site for the game SIREN, and i've got some of the basics already laid out, i just gotta get it working and get it known, so i am looking to be pointed in the right direction.

Three things make a great site:
1. Content content content! If you have nothing new to offer to the web in terms of what your site is actually about, then don't waste our time by making one! No one wants to read a website about your pet cat, your car, or your CD collection.
2. Easy access. Do not fill the site with flash intros, animated GIFs, and hidden links. Make the content easy to see, and easy to get to. IGN.com does a good job of this.
3. Slick advertising. I don't have to tell you that pop-ups, ghost adverts, and spyware is INCREDIBLY irritating. If you must have advertising on your site, place it somewhere convenient and where it won't interfere with the content of your site. MKO does a good job of this.

A site that has easiy to access information that is informative and entertaining. Take the content of Microsoft.com and the GUI of Apple.com and fast servers (unlike either!) and you have a pretty good site.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I really appreciate it :) I'm actually going to dedicate the site mainly to one game only, but i'm going to make it have a wealth of information and i'm going to keep the graphic stuff on the down-low so to say... I especially know what is meant when suggested to not overflow the site with spiffy graphics, flash, and so on... i've got the site already up granted, but i'm looking into re-designing the place a bit more, and now that the game is out, and there's a lot more interest in it by people, not to mention i've got more than enough resources at hand to make a greatly-compiled database for people to accss, i am definitely going to start work on the site this weekend..
Again, thanks people, you guys all rock!!! :)

A site needs to be pleasing to the eye, like this one. The colors are friendly and warm *Ninja Spectre*. So make sure there are alot of cool pics *this site doesn't have em very much anymore
* Make the site easy to navigate, and don't put anything that's boring or has too much text.
works for me !
