Diablo 2. That was so fucking good.
Hmm....If I recall my first online experience was Mario Strikers Charged, we didn't get quality internet in my house until I was like 17 I think so playing online wasn't possible. We had dial up for the rest of the time.
I miss playing that game, last time I played, there were still people playing online, great Soccer/Football game. I still haven't unlocked Petey Piranha unfortunately, that game's A.I. is so cheap

Damn...why does this make me feel old?
The first game I played online was a MUD (a text based RPG) called Blue Moon. Are MUDs and similar still around? *goes googling*

TimeShift, a first-person shooter with time-traveling mechanics, that game is now dead online, I'm sure of it.
In the single-player mode, you wore a full-body suit that allows time-travel, in the beginning the main time-traveling component is damaged, and switches its functionality to travel time in short periods.
You had a Time Energy bar that recharges after several seconds, your time-travel abilities were Time Slow, Time Stop, and Time Reverse, the screen effects and sounds were different depending on which Time power you used. Time Slow gives the corners of the screen a blue, watery type of wavy effects, Time Stop gives the corners a white sort-of cloudy effect, and turns off the colors of the world, leaving everything black and white. Time Reverse renders the world in an orange tint, with a sort-of cloudy effect in the corners of your vision, similar to Time Stop, but orange.
How would Time Powers work in online? The Time Powers were turned into Time Grenades! The grenades produce a Time Bubble that affects anyone and anything it touches, 'cept for the landscape. The bubble sizes vary depending on the Time Grenade used, being caught in a Time Bubble also causes the corners of the screen to have an effect like in the single-player.
Time Slow takes the least of your Time Energy and produces the biggest bubble, blue-tinted in color. Time Stop produces the smallest bubble, gray-tinted, anything and anybody it touches will be frozen in time! Time Reverse is orange-tinted and the bubble is smaller than the Slow Bubble, but bigger than the Stop Bubble, it also doesn't really act like it reverses time, it acts more like a Time Bubble that sends things right back at'cha. Say you leaped from a high place, sending a Time Grenade at the point of impact, the Time "Reverse" bubble will send you right back up to the height you were when you jumped. Time Reverse is also great if you're getting a barrage of projectiles and bullets thrown at you, return to sender.
TimeShift was really cool back then, the online is most likely dead now.

Lol, I am a relative newcomer to online gaming. My family have always been more into sports and things so internet at the house was never a priority. First game I have really played a lot online was Red Dead Redemption. It's also been one of the best, so much you can do. Slowly been trying out a lot of my older games online. People can say what they want but CoD is awesome online (all of them). I'm keen to try Team Fortress 2 and both Left 4 Deads out (are people still playing that on Xbox?) but Battlefield 3 is consuming all my game time right now.
