This occurred to me a while back when I was playing WoW with my brother. Apparently some guy didn't appreciate me being kinda low with my DPS (haven't played in over a while so of course I'm behind). My brother was driving me through an instance and this guy was just getting annoyed. So he whips out, "Dude, quit playing like a girl!" Little did he know that I AM a girl behind my shadow priest, and when my brother told him, he left the group, continued to whisper to me how much it ruins the game when girls play, I'm cute and then stopped talking to me.

I don't quite understand how there's a difference in playing abilities when it comes to both guys and girls. Maybe you guys can help me out here.

Do they not play as hardcore as the guys do? They're not that big of a fan of the game? They wouldn't know what to do? They need to be in the kitchen at all times making sandwiches?

It's like that in sports, it's like that in real life, but in video games... I can't see the difference because I don't see any way how girls play differently than guys.

Thought this might be another interesting topic to talk about.

I know a lot of female gamers who would destroy the majority of male gamers, if given the proper game to play. For example, I have a female friend who absolutely destroys at action games. She got S rankings on every mission on Dante Must Die mode on Devil May Cry without even trying, and she pulls off some amazing combos on the game, she does the same thing on Ninja Gaiden, and she plays a real mean Left 4 Dead too. I have another female friend who can beat beat RPGs like nothing, all of her characters are always a much higher level than mine ever are, and she knows strategy better than I do too. I also know a girl who is really good at driving games (my worst genre) and she always beats me every time.

So, I don't see how being a girl means that someone sucks at games. I actually wish I knew more female gamers, but if the male audience keeps scaring them away we'll have fewer females enjoying our hobby. I think girls are more than capable of playing at the same level as guys, and in most cases they can surpass their male counterparts.

As for the reasons why guys do this? The only thing I could think of is based on common misconceptions and ideologies installed within the common psyche of every male. The general way that men think is that women cannot do things to the same degree as men, a huge misconception that does not hold any valid point or argument. However, guys still believe this way of thinking is correct and say sexist remarks towards women all of the time. Their points that they try to validate within their incoherent rants about women is simply based upon stereotypical depictions and ideas that women are supposed to be less competent than men at most tasks. I think that this way of thinking will stay active within the male mind for a long time, it will diminish in terms of quantity of men applying this thought pattern towards women, but I believe it will always exist. It's sad really, since most women are a lot more capable of performing tasks than men are, especially nowadays. I believe it falls back on society and the general consensus that members of society have towards women and their "rightful" roles within society. I say that women should continue to step up and prove their capabilities, and maybe more men will open their minds to the though that women are the same as men in terms of performance standards and acceptable roles within society.

Everybody knows women arent as good as men at anything, and anytime they win is just a pleasantry extended by us, men, just to make them feel better about themselves, and therefore we don't have to hear their incessant whining.

Spoilers: (Highlight to reveal)
This is clearly a joke... In all seriousness... my sister has kicked my ass in videogames for years... granted, she is older, but still... do not underestimate a girl player cause you are gonna go down fast!!!!

I don't know a single girl who is better than the majority of my male friends at any competitive video game such as racing, fighting, or even Mario Party.

Girls can kick ass at video games and you know what I'm just fine with that. Two of the best fighting game players I know are girls and it doesn't bother me at all. As long as you get to play the game you like I don't think it really matters who you play against. As long as you enjoy playing it's a non-issue and if playing against a girl ruins the fun for you than you need to grow up.

People tend to talk a trash when they play online (just like the internet forums & blogs). The few girl gamers I've come across (playing FPS) have been pretty good. I've played a few matches of one of the Street Fighter games against a girl before, and she was considerably better than me.

I wish I actually knew more girl gamers, because one the things I don't like whrn playing games is trash talking. Girls don't seem to do that all, while almost every guy playing games online talk some kind of trash.

I like the girl gamers who expand their gaming horizons. Not just play CoD and Halo and automatically claim themselves as a gamer.

Biotch, play some other games and get back to me.

But yeah, I've played some pretty good female gamers in Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat before.

I think it's mostly the "boys club" niche that video games have carried for the majority of it's existence. That's not to say that women don't play video games or are somehow genetically inferior to men at video games, it's just that they're still in the minority for a myriad of reasons.

I like Extra Credits take on it:

-Female Characters in Games: Why women don't relate.

-Gaming Medium: Sharing it with others.

-
Gamer: Identifying with the term.

It should be changed to, "you play games like an ATTRACTIVE girl!" One word makes a world of difference.

Gaming has become progressively more popular these days, more people are gaming now than ever before. You give anybody a game they like (gender, race etc are irrelevant) and they'll play it and most likely play it well.

My niece loves Call of Duty, she kicks butt at it, I don't like it, but she loves it and wins often.

My two sisters growing up used to love playing fighting games, they loved Kitana and Mileena, they did pretty well too, they even still sometimes play games, like Street Fighter.

My youngest niece has already discovered the beauty of games she loves wrestling games, fighting games, but she also likes the adorable my little pony and Dora games too.

My thoughts on games is simple, anyone can enjoy games and be good at them, you just have to find something that appeals to this specific person and I believe every genre has something that everyone can enjoy.

The harcore v.s. casual gamers stuff needs to go too, I'm so tired of casual being considered a bad thing by snobbish gamers, casual gamers enjoy their games, they just don't get as into them and that's okay, they're getting what they need out of their experience and moving onto other things, leave them alone.

What would help girl gamers feel more comfortable is if guy gamers would stop acting like freaks or like being a girl gamer is some scientific phenomena when they discover a girl gamer, there's stuff like, "Oh my god, you're a girl and play games good...HOTT, wanna exchange pictures ..." Why would she? She's just enjoying the game like everyone else....back off creeper...

A better sandwich maker? Yes. Better gamer? Nah. Jk

For what it's worth I've been beasted on by one girl in SSFIV and I was impressed.

I know a few girl gamers and my sister happens to be one. She's kind of stuck in the generic girl gamer category though. Sims, can't play MK worth a damn and can't save a life in GOW 2.

My buddy in VA though? I suspect her to be top notch on the stick. Ha haaaa! DOUBLE ENTENDRE!

I don't understand that more girls aren't interrested in gaming. Most guys are, at least in some form of gaming but girls just don't care for it. Because I have always loved games since I got a Pong console as a little kid I don't get it. I have tried everything to get my girlfriend interested in games. I might as well try and get my cat to make supper. She actually played a couple of games of MK with me and "liked that Kitana chick". Just twirled around the arcade stick and pushing buttons.

I bought that stupid Scene It game with the 4 buzzers and she digs that but no interest in anything else. Best I got out of her was she played a bit of Fable 2 untill she realised her character gets fat when eating and there was not enough outfits she can buy. Honestly, the other day she asks me to put on the Xbox for her while I am off doing something. I get really happy thinking I am getting through to her. Then she ends up putting together outfits for her avatar for an hour! confused Women man...games just aren't in their genes.

I can't tell if you're being facetious. When you say that you know girls who can hold their own in a video game, do you mean like, she'll win one out of every ten matches? Or are you saying that you know a girl who is better than all of your male friends at video games? Because I don't know any girls who are better than all of my male friends, or even half of them, but I know girls who can win once out of every ten games. And it's not even a pity victory.
