- Actor Efrem Zimbalist Jr., Voice of Alfred on Batman: The Animated Series, Dies at 95
Veteran actor Efrem Zimbalist Jr. -- known to older generations as the star of the TV series 77 Sunset Strip and The F.B.I. and to younger audiences as the voice of Alfred Pennyworth on Batman: The Animated Series, has died at the age of 95.
In the 1980s, Zimbalist acted opposite his daughter, actress Stephani Zimbalist, and Pierce Brosnan on Remington Steele, where he played the title character's mentor. He also played "Don Alejandro de la Vega" in the 1990 TV series Zorro.
Not talked about as often as some of his castmates, but to my mind, the reigning definitive Alfred Pennyworth. Obviously a lot of other noteworthy credits, too. Loved the 90 Zorro series, at the time. Very sad news.

The Batman: TAS supporting cast never got the credit it deserved. Efrem Zimbalist WAS Alfred. Bob Hastings WAS Jim Gordon. So much so that I'm not convinced Kevin Conroy would be as iconic a Batman had he not had so much to play off of.

It's really upsetting to lose someone like him. His contributions are a significant part of my childhood days. I loved him as Alfred, and I loved him as Doc Ock. It's great that he lived a long, fulfilling life. R.I.P Efrem.
It's interesting to note that many of the actors who've portrayed Alfred have lived very long lives. Ian Abercrombie was the youngest passing away at 77 due to sudden Kidney failure.
Other than that William Austin and Alan Napier lived well into their 80s, Michael Gough and Efrem Zimbalist into their 90s, Michael Cain seems pretty spry for being in his 80s, Jermey Irons seems quite healthy at 65, and Sean Pertwee doesn't at all look his 50 years.
Mr. Zimbalist lived a good long life, gave great performances, and we are in his debt.

He was the "true" Alfred to me as well.
All things considered, 95 years is a hell of a run.
