i thought the MKvsDC thread was looking pretty dead so I decided to start a new topic. Anyway, the game is about to be 2 years old and I still don't know what the community thinks of the combat system. Sure I've heard people say it was good, it was umk3 ish, and it was crap, but I really want more detail about what the community thinks.

Personally I thought the combat itself was great. It wasn't perfect or perfectly balanced for that matter, but it felt like an MK game and it was a step up from the previous 3D MK games.(Combat wise). The combo system was pretty damn good, because it was just fun to input special moves into combos that made it seem really fluid. The game was more about the players freedom to create combos rather than having pre made ones. The pro move system was also a great addition as it added more depth and it made it harder to master a character. I also liked the return of the uppercut. It made a good anti air and an even better wake up. To me the game felt like a 2D game with the freedom of moving in 3D. To me it isn't really 3D or 2D but a bastard hybrid that differs from so many other fighters.

The core combat itself may have been good, but there where other aspects that really bogged down the fighting. Rage didn't work. Every time I RAGED they got away, if they RAged I would dogde every move. The other problem was close combat. A good idea on paper and kind of fun at first but nobody used it because you could just do a regular throw and do a decent amount of damage. Free fall combat just pissed me off once I played rank. I would be winning and then some how the jackass would get lucky and knock me off the edge and then I end up losing a good chunk of health to some noob. Even though I kind of liked the 3D aspect it added to the brokeness of the game. It made for a lot of wall combos and glitches for scrubs online.

Even though the game mechanics had issues, I thought it showed promise and I was even surprised to see that they ditched the pro move system, because it was a great addition. Overall I would say that this comes really damn close to my being my favorite MK fighting mechanic, and I can even see shades of MKvsDC's gameplay in the the new game. So my point is that this game, gameplay wise is pretty damn good, and those who want to experience a new MK with some resemblence to the old game should at least give it a rent.
