I wonder what Ed Boon's problem is with Hawkman. Anyway, unless Boon is pulling his normal trickery, which he seems rather serious this time, Hawkman will not be in this game.

Thoughts?

Edit: Sorry for the lack of a hotlink. Too drunk to look up how to do it again.

It's just a running joke of his. The joke revolves around a panel from a very old comic where Hawkman is all like "Give my life to save Midway? NEVER!" (Referring to a town in the DCU called Midway City, but obviously, the joke is about the company Midway going bankrupt)

If Hawkman's really not in the game, it'll just be because Hawkman's too lame of a character to make a roster that only has 20-some spaces to give away.

Ehhh, come on. Poison Ivy is a character who has no traditional precedent for combat. She isn't a "perfect" choice for a fighting game. Hawkman is all about throwing down, swinging from the hip, cracking skulls. He's never going to be first choice, but damned if he isn't a worthy inclusion in any twenty-odd stack for a DC fighting game!

On the other hand, with the last decade (or more) of experiences with the NRS guys, it just seems in keeping that they'd do their darndest to avoid a character that demands unique biology. Big ol' wings intersecting with arena elements, demanding special animation and creating whatever other extra work might be needed? Almost feels like shades of Motaro. Hope not, but it wouldn't be the biggest shock.

The character deserves a spot, but maybe not enough for the work.

Hawkman may "fit in" in a fighting game environment but he's also an incredibly boring and unpopular character. (And who is he this week, Carter Hall the archaeologist, Katar Hol the alien cop, or some bizarre amalgamation of the two?)

Not to mention the one-note-ness of his fighting style. Every special move would be "hit 'em with a mace". You could portray him as a weaponsmaster in general I guess, but anything he could do with that sort of style, Wonder Woman could do better.

Though if he weren't so lame, wings wouldn't be the reason to exclude him, it was never a problem with Nitara or Onaga.

Not sure where Poison Ivy came in...but she could have all kinds of awesome moves summoning giant thorny vines to smash the opponent or venus fly traps to bite them out of the ground.

Going to go out on a limb and say if Hawkgirl was in announced, nobody would have a problem. You could have all the powers of Hawkman, without the facepalming lameness.

Here's how boring of a character Hawkman is: In JLU, he was voiced by this guy:

And it actually fit.

I believe this is Ed's Hawkman story on why he won't be in the game:

http://www.giantbomb.com/podcast/?podcast_id=317

Skip to 1:44.48 After a couple minutes Ed tells his story. Maybe he's kidding, maybe not...but I am guessing he won't be in.

I disagree about Hawkman being lame. As per usual, all of this is opinionated.

Though I feel Hawkman could be a much more unique combatant than you give him credit for. Yes, he has suffered from horrendous continuity errors, but that is due to poor writing from the Golden Age onwards, but that doesn't diminish his prowess as one the top fighters in the DC Universe that isn't, as NRS would say it, a "Power Character".

While his mace could create for some interesting specials, other weapons that he has used commonly include spears, nets, and short swords. He has also previously used the Claw of Horus, and gauntlet that essentially channels the Earths gravitational field, that could be used as magnetic blasts. He has even fought Superman using it.
Flight is also an advantage.

Hell, if you think about it, you could say they'd have a hard time making Batman unique compared to characters like Superman and Cyborg, but obviously they have. If they really work at it, they can make any character unique, moves-wise.

Just my two cents.

Batman has an entire belt full of gadgets. Batarangs, smoke bombs, acid vials, a grappling hook gun, a sonic thingy that draws a swarm of bats to him, and even the Batmobile has a remote control.

If anything, I always feel like he didn't have anywhere near enough special moves in MKvsDCU and it looks like he won't in this game either. I wanna see him tie people up with the electrified bola from Batman Forever, or the explosive foam from the Arkham games, especially when he sprays it on his knuckles for exploding punches, lol.

But Hawkman...maaaan, it's always the damn mace. Or sometimes a sword or axe. He only used the Claw of Horus in like ONE story ever. Dude gets his powers from a metal that negates gravity and this is all he can think to do with it?
The comics writers should give him something new, like...I dunno, an actual pet hawk he can command to attack people, like The Falcon in Marvel, lol.

Well...maybe having a net and being one of the "free hit move" guys of the game Cyrax-style would actually make Hawkman a decent addition.

But there are still a hundred better characters to give away one of those 20-some precious slots to. Hell, the devs are more likely to think of Green Arrow having a trick-arrow that splits into a net than they are to remember that Hawkman occasionally uses one.

3 ways to look at it:

1) Hawkgirl gets the spot, already decided

2) Without lying but trolling, he may not be in the game CURRENTLY; but might be one of the last characters put in the game

3) Maybe there is a legal matter using him/the whole Midway terminology; or he's very very superstitious lol.

As for Poison Ivy (well the newer 52 style):

Abilities
â–a Botanist: Expertise in botany. She specializes in creating new plant species and plant/animal hybrids
â–a Toxicologist
â–a Proficient Combatant: Poison Ivy's athletic abilities have grown over the course of her career. She has learned a limited style of martial arts fighting, is proficient at climbing and leaping, and is a strong and fast swimmer.

With this immortality issue going on, I say she's PERFECT/UNIQUE! Way better than Hawkman lol, even though I don't dislike him!!!

A mod that needs to be modded. Tsk tsk.

I don't know Hawkman other than him being the male equivalent to Hawkgirl who I only know due to the Justice League cartoon. Question is, why should they choose Hawkman over Hawkgirl if they should choose either of them? Hawkgirl has more screentime and would be the logical choice between the two, simply because people would recognize her easier due to her appearance in the Justice League cartoon.

And if he really is that lame as you guys are saying he is, then Hawkgirl would be the better choice, right?

Does Hawkgirl have anything that Hawkman doesn't? I mean I'd prefer Hawkgirl, especially with the sexy latin accent she had in Justice League but if the issue is a potentially boring move set than yeah.

The cartoon version of Hawkgirl did have some powers that Hawkman and Hawkgirl normally don't in the comics. She could electrify her mace and the metal it was made of turned out to be anti-magic. Like she could hit ghosts or kill gods with it, or if Dr. Fate put up a forcefield, she could shatter it in one blow because the forcefield was a magic spell.
But that doesn't really transfer to game mechanics in a balance-able way. And Nightwing's sticks already do the electric charge thing.

Hawkwoman could be cool. I think she could be more warrior-ish. Like maybe her moves could be some thing like these...
Javelin throw- she could have a spear that's always on her back typ thing and she throws it.
Grab and bash- she grabs the person and hits themin the head a couple of times.
Electrify- she's makes her mace electrified and her attacks have more damage
Flying drop- she flies at them and grabs them, she then flies up and throws them down.
Up down- she uses her mace and hits them up and slams them down making them bounce, setting up for a combo
Wing hit- twirls and hits them with her wings. Edit...... Oh yeah! And that net too

Groan. The cartoon Hawkgirl was Hawkman with an eye for saturday morning gender equality. A moment in time that has ultimately passed. Which is why you'll always have to work a lot harder to find a Hawkgirl comic than Hawkman. Asking the century to justify Hawkman over Hawkgirl is idiotic and coming at it completely backwards. Hawkgirl is the female equivalent of Hawkman -- he's the precursor, the all-star, the source of the vast majority of the tropes.

That Hawkgirl/Hawkwoman has had the opportunity to grow as a character is pretty cool, if a little bit contradictory in fashion [not sure MKO is the best place to talk gender politics in comics], but you've gotta know your place in time and the universe. When you make a list of fighting DC heroes, it's Hawkman who quickly makes the list, sandwiched between the franchise players and the martial artists. Hawkgirl wouldn't be any kind of travesty, but Hawkman's the go-to. Not lame, wasn't lame, will never be lame. A garbled mess, sometimes, but never lame.

I imagine it's an issue of familiarity, but if the pictures moving helps:

Spoilers: the cartoons are for whiney annoying kids with silly haircuts.
Sit quietly and be ashamed. Hawkman wouldn't take this kinda crap. He's an archaeologist!

HAWKMAN LOVES ARMLESS FUN! HAHAHA! Shut up.

He doesn't usually have a hawks mouth on his face. Usually it's just the top of the beak, like this:

This is how he 'currently' looks in the comics:
