From what I'm reading, he seems to be the order-at-all-cost type, and I can see how that philosophy could lead to a number of atrocities. My question to the seasoned DC fans: how consistent is that motivation through the decades of comics? And how genuine is it? Is it blind zeal, or is it a cheap rationalization.
I'm researching the issue, but wikipedia can only do so much. I'm reading the New 52 stuff, but I would like to know how representative that version of Sinestro is throughout comic history.

Comics weren't exactly deep and consistent in the era Sinestro was originally created, and he was presumed dead for most of the 90's, so, if you read Geoff Johns' run, particularly Sinestro Corps War and the Nu52 GL (which you're already doing), you should have a pretty good grasp on his complete personality.
As for how "genuine" his motivation is, we've only had bare hints at his origin, but it seems like Sinestro's home planet was extremely slummy before he got a Lantern ring, or at least that the neighborhood of it that he came from was "the streets", so to speak. He's seen some seedy, hedonistic shit and seems to really believe what he's selling about how the only way to stop crime and bring order to the universe is to keep people on a short leash and rule through fear.
Though he seems less extreme about the "the corps would be more effective if people feared us" part when he's got a green ring compared to the yellow. Yellow rings do influence their hosts and make them think fear is more powerful than other emotions, though.

I don't think he would kick a puppy or anything.

I'm not that knowledgable when it comes to the Green Lantern universe, but from what I get from him...he seems to be under the same lines of not evil, just a darker shade of grey. He doesn't see eye to eye with the good guys, but isn't necissarily going out of his way to be bad. Just believes in a different type of justice. Different tactic, different methods.
Similar to Magneto or Catwoman to a lesser degree.

That's not entirely true, he hasn't really changed.
This page from Sinestro Corps War sums up his motivations pretty well and he's still more or less consistent to it.

Well Sinestro Corps War was before the New52 relaunch.
Green Lantern continuity wasn't rebooted with everybody else. You actually have to go all the way back to 2005 when Geoff Johns started writing GL to get caught up.

Just do what people have done for decades when there were no reboots, just pick up a comic and start reading, then backtrack to find out what you missed if you're that interested.
I don't get why people these days act like it's so hard, especially when we now live in an era where the internet is there so you can look shit up.

Sounds like everyone's in agreement, and the input has indeed helped. If Sinestro is high-mid tier (not higher; not lower), I'm going to be all over this character. I'll train with him for a week, and if he meshes with my style, I'm buying a Yellow Lantern shirt for tournaments.
Story does matter to me. Even if a character fits like a glove, I have to connect with who I'm playing with.
EDIT: In other news, I googled Kryb.
What if that puppy was out of line?
