Ok so, this was a topic of conversation at dinner the other night (yes, I am a nerd) and was wondering if some people who are reading current comics can chime in to provide some context on the matter. The question wasn't who would win in a full on brawl between the two super sluggers necessarily as much as who would be ranked higher via a static metric like a Power Level. It's sort of like talking how the character "matches up" against everyone in the DCU...not just vs one another.

I argued that Wonder Woman has been benefitting from retcon power creep in her own WW series but that it isn't necessarily shown in JLA and other series. So, if we take into account HER series...she's one if not the most single powerful current DCU heroes. Edging out even Superman.

What do you guys think? Can any of you clarify WW's power level?

Also bonus question: Is there a canon explanation for her invisible jet and her "stars and stripes" costume across any era? I got asked this too and I had no clue except "Murica" and, "how do you make something inherently cool like fighter jets even cooler? You make it invisible."

I've always just assumed Superman was physically stronger, I'd assume more durable too since WW goes to the effort of blocking bullets with her wrist gauntlets, where as Supes just lets them of his face and giggles.

As for WW stars and stripes costume, in at least one continuity she was wearing the countries flag as a sign of peace or something like that, there may be other reasonings for it in different stories, including but not limited to; 'Murica, Fuck yea".

I always imagined it was like Wonder Woman could KNOCK Superman out but Superman could KILL Wonder Woman.

In terms of technicality I'd imagine on a level field, Wonder Woman could out fight Superman.

But then again Wonder Woman's power levels fluctuates on the story it seems.

I'm not much of a New 52 guy, but I think a definitive Wonder Woman should be in the league of - but a step or two off Superman. I'm reluctant to compare the two (as that's not the point of reference in the original post), but if you try to measure them as equivalents against other characters, you're inevitably looking at two heroic protagonists of a similar calibre. So, you're going to get the same narrative conceits steering their abilities.

I get the impression Superman isn't what he used to be in the strength and endurance department -- unless, of course, he's a bastard maniac who wants to kill everyone. Then he's got carte blanche.

I think in classic terms - it's no contest. Superman's much stronger, Wonder Woman's a little weaker. I think a modern 'definitive' take has them close, but Supes still on top. New 52/movies can go screw.

One time Superman tried his best to kill Wonder Woman (thinking she was Doomsday and killed Lois) while Wonder Woman was holding back. She was able to slit Superman's throat with her tiara. He was gasping for breath and couldn't do anything to stop her from killing Maxwell Lord.

Raw power: Superman
Skill and technique: Wonder woman

But currently, with the New 52? I don't know. Comics are expensive where I currently am because the large paperback are the only ones available.

Superman is vulnerable to magic, part of the reason I've always favored Capta-....ughh...Shazam.....over the Man of Steel. Assuming the Greek pantheon works in a way similar to the Rock of Eternity, I've got to give the edge to Wonder Woman. Though it's not a mainstream comic, an emotionally abused and brainwashed Captain Marvel beat Superman down HARD in Kingdom Come. I could only imagine what Wonder Woman's proper training as a warrior, coupled with her agility, would do to Superman.

Superman Wins. Hands down.

WW: "don't hold back on me"
Supes: "If I don't, you're dead"

In some continuities, her costume is deliberately designed to look American so that when she makes her debut in "Man's World", the public will be more inclined to trust her, or as a tribute to an American soldier who had come to Paradise Island.

The last known explanation was that red and blue with stars happens to be the colors of the Amazon flag as well. It's hardly an uncommon design, after all.

As for the invisible jet, Pre-Crisis Wonder Woman couldn't fly and the Amazons had advanced technology somehow. (Another example would be the "purple ray", an instant-healing device)

Post-Crisis, Wonder Woman can fly, and the jet is actually a piece of shapeshifting alien technology she picked up on one of her adventures, "jet" is just one of the shapes it takes, useful for carting passengers.

In JLU, the jet was a stealth plane she stole from Owlman.
