There three best candidates for this and I chose Dead or Alive series, Street Fighter series, and the best of the best; Mortal Kombat series. Dead or Alive series are more of a modern day story. Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are placed in a world of fantasy, so to speak.

IMO, the tier list would be MK>DOA>SF

Street Fighter is classic and is one of the best fighting games. Their main characters are Ryu and Ken, with their famous Haduken and Shoryuken specials. But, they fall in the comparison between DOA and MK. Street Fighters are rather more cartoon-like characters that can do fireballs and such. Their media (ie. Street Fighters: The Movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme) is pretty sucky compared to Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihalation. The main baddies in this game are Akuma, Bison and that bald guy, i can't recall his name.

Dead or Alive is only a few series starting with the one that started in the late 1900's. Their main game to date, Dead or Alive 4, is their best one IMO. The storyline starts off as Kasumi looking to find why they crippled her brother after the first Dead or Alive Tournament. With her as the last heir of the Mugen Tenshin Clan, she abandons her clan, and becomes a runaway shinobi. She then participates in the second DOA Tournament.
The main baddies in this game are Raidou, Tengu (Bankotsu-bo), and Kasumi's clone.

And finally, Mortal Kombat. Started in 1992, their first game took the arcades by storm. With intense gore and their signature "Finish Him/Her!" along with their fatalities make this game a memorable one. The first game started with Earthrealm's finest warriors fighting Shang Tsung for the safety of Earthrealm. In the end, Liu Kang defeated the reigning champion, Goro and finished Shang Tsung with a Flying Kick. In MKII, Shang Tsung comes back. THis time, better than ever. But it isn't him that was trying to take Earthrealm. This time, the real baddie, Shao Kahn, is the superboss. Again, Liu Kang beats him and saves Earthrealm........
The main baddies in this game is Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Quan Chi, Onaga and Shinnok.

In the end, the only one that stands up against MK is SF cuz it and MK goes way back, even tho DOA has a place somewhere in here. It deserves to be mentioned....Well, post your thoughts and we'll see who's champ!!

MK>SF> DOA imo.

Mortal Kombat may not have the awesome gameplay, but it is always fun and easy to pick-up-and-play system. The storyline is always good and interesting, and has great characters overall.

Street Fighter has good gameplay, and cool characters; still, it dosen't have a good storyline imo.

DOA is a fun series, but a huge button mashing fest imo, and dosen't require much skill. The characters are all human, pretty much at least, so really no interesting non-human characters.

Well, I would've put Tekken on this list but I'll make due with this DOA that I know nothing about outside of its mostly-female roster and volleyball spin-offs.

MK>SF>DOA

I always thought that Mortal Kombat had the koolest...coolest story of all fighting games and had such intriguing characters (Hellspawn spectres, cryomancer ninjas, eternal Emperors, all sorts of people...). I too think that it was easy to pick up (Though impossible to beat), especially today, and only improved with time. From what I can tell, SF did little to change itself outside of making faster gameplay, more super specials, and one or two new characters that are really rip-offs of older ones. MK on the other hand, injected a running and combo system into MK3-MKGold, transitioned from 2D to 3D unlike most fighting games, and added the awesome system of having multiple fighting styles for each character. I also like MK's button combinations for doing moves. SF always intimidated me with how you had to push Left, Diagnol Down Left, Down, Diagnol Down Right, Right, High Punch to do moves whereas MK always spoke to me with its simple Back, Back, Low Punch mindset (Of course, a while ago I thought you had to do all of SF's button inputs one button at a time like MK's and not a fluid motion from left button to right button so that's why I never liked their moves.). And, of course, MK's the one with the Fatalities. All of this has made me a long-time MK fan and almost prohibits me from liking other games.

I didn't give a crap about SF and actually hated it up until my friend got this DVD set of a show called "Street Fighter II V." While I don't know what the "V" stands for or why Ryu and Ken are animated to look nothing like their true selves, I found the show interesting enough (Even though my friend and I watch the episodes solely to make fun of everything because it's anime and we're not fans of anime.). My friend also researched SF to find out famous one-liners and moves he could reference for his wrestling gimmick (Uh...long story. Short version: we occasionally wrestle on his trampoline and we come up with gimmicks and storylines when we can.). So by now, I'm tolerant of SF and even have a favorite character. Japan calls him Balrog and the United States know him as Vega. Aside from the show and Vega though, I don't really like much about SF. Too many characters have that karate gi thing going on in which not only do they all wear similar clothes, but they also have all the same moves (And believe me, that IS worse than MK's palette-swap days because at least Scorpion had different moves than Sub-Zero, not the same things but weaker/stronger/colored differently.). Also, like "SF 2 V," it's too anime for my tastes (Something Tekken is now suffering from much to my displeasure). Another thing is that the series confuses me with who the bad guy really is. Normally its Bison/Vega but then Akuma will come in and the next thing you know, you're fighting him for the last boss. What's up with Akuma and what's the series' status here? Also, why is it that SF2 had so many remakes? The MK team got their act together in one game for the most part, only having remade MK3 and MK4 and even then they only have 3 between the two originals. Then there's SF Alpha...Why are so many games in the SF series prequils? Has the story stopped all together and now all that's left to do is explain the backstory? Well actually, it has stopped, hasn't it? SF doesn't make games anymore, right?

As for DOA...I've got nothing. Don't know anything about it and I don't care to learn about it...Unless of course this is the game that had Halo's Master Chief as a playable character in their X Box release. Is this that series? PS to ErmacFan- The bald, one-eyed, muay thai fighter from Thailand is named Sagat...and wasn't he the last boss of the first game? What's the deal with SF? Can't they commit to a last boss and quit flip-flopping!? Just joking glasses. ...Or am I furious?

Sagat! Thats the name, the guy with the scar from Ryu's Shoryuken Uppercut. Furthermore, Dead or Alive is a japanese based game with japanese quotes and shit. And, quite frankly, i really like the series since dead or alive 2. I havent played doa3 yet and i just bought doa4. Cant w8 to see Kasumi again!

Kasumi....

Even tho Soul Calibur is a good game, and even tho i love Nightmare from the SC series, I would have to disagree with ur tier. I thought about it but SC doesnt belong cuz they're mainly a weapon-based fighting game, which could slaughter everyone without weapons. Only MK would stand a chance. If we had SC in here, it would be having an experiment between an ocean and a puddle seeing who would evaporate faster. An unfair and unequal comparison. But good try tho!

Oh... my bad, I thought we were picking our faves, not the strongest.

MK > SF > DOA

That should be pretty obvious though... MK has characters like Sheeva, Shao Kahn, Onaga and Moloch who could easy defeat anyone from the other games. And even the normal characters, like Dairou, Sonya and Ermac, all have some kind of power, be it teleportation or something like that. It would be just too much to handle for the other games.

SF characters also have Hadokens and a few things like that, but even Gill, Akuma and Oro (I think those are the strongest SF fighters) would not stand a chance against the strongest MK fighters - not to mention how there are more big, overpowered MK dudes (all the bosses and stuff).

DOA stands no chance - they are good at fighting, but if you can throw Hadokens or freeze people or throw spears or whatever, it doesn't really mean much.

Okay, this isn't at all biased.

DOA>MK.....SF = neutral

MK>SF>DOA

Mortal Kombat comes in first with its phenmanol(probably spelled that wrong)storyline, great variety of characters and great fighting mechanisms and the intense blood and gore that few other fighting games give us.

Street Fighter comes in second. With its being the father of modern fighting video games, cool chacters and though hard to understand pretty good story. However it does not make first because of the small variation in terms of a characters moves.Little violence never going into 3D(not inculding that one time they did because from what i've heard that game sucked so much it was barely considered a video game)and adding to many prequels.

DOA comes in last because it is essentially a porn fighting game.

Well Mortal Kombat gameplay is meant to be easy to pick up and play type of Fighter and also fun.

With Street fighter, what story.

DOA; jiggle effect

MK then ST then DOA.

Ayane, who could level an entire skyscraper with her spell versus a guy who can do split punches and throw blobs of shadows?

Mk has meager chances sometimes.

for me... mk>sf>doa

MK is the best...it's the only fighting game with a decent storyline and with the chance to kill(obviously) your opponent, and lot and lot of blood.

SF series was good until the second chapter, and maybe the EX+alpha series was good, but now is a dead series.

i love a lot DOA,but it'not a real foe to MK and SF franchise....it's funny to see women breast jumping up and down during a fight, but it's not funny see a fist that should leave you without teeth, and neither a spill of blood.

BTW,i'm not crazy,but for me MK >Tekken>Virtua fighter>Soul calibur.

Tekken was good until tekken 3,and in that game the blood was transparent and i don't understand why after a kick of a punche there were special effects.Tekken 4 is a total failure and tekken 5 an clone to Tekken 3,hoping that Tekken 6 will be a lot better....

Virtua fighter "THE MST REALISTICAL FIGHTING GAME...EHM NOT THE FIGHTING SIMULATION!"....go to hell!
It's too slow....they think that a real fight is slow....you have to wait at least two or three seconds after a three-four hits combos....

and at last but not least Soul calibur, the most overrated game ever....i have SC 3 from 2 years and even tough i play it a lot,i never understand how the gameplay mechanic works.I keep on winning pushing always the same button.
