"Baptism by Kombat"
Scorpion (MK9) vs. Ryu. This was the winning entry of one of the Fake Picture Kontests that I also hosted back in 2013, the last I entered prior to my retirement from the scene.

Geez nice way to finish me off. At least my avatar looks amazing. Great detail and execution here. I'm not qualified enough to critique custom sprite work so I'll leave that to the vets. I hope you return to the industry with some new pieces that will inspire the rest of us to create more. Good to see you back. 4/5

0/5 dragons cuz I'm a big bowl full of salty jelly

Scorpion's a resized render.

Shadow priest is a resized render.

Ryu is a resized render.

The arena is a resized render.

Brah, is anything in this your own work?

On a more serious note................. I like everything except Ryu. That's not to say his sprite is of low quality... he just seems so huge. And that's the poor design choice of Capcom. I mean, seriously, how many martial artists in the real world look like 350lb weight lifters? Who is that fuckin' huge and can do flips and shit in the air? It's a shame MK's fighters have been leaning toward that huge muscular look ever since MKDA.

Your Scorpion has muscles, but is still relatively "thin" and matches the old school MK look. I like that.

Yeah, I had a lot of issues with Ryu. To be consistent with the 3D look of MK9, I looked at Street Fighter IV models and they were incredibly cartoony, so I had to make a lot of adjustments to make him fit in with the Scorpion sprite. His tunic looks bigger than it should not only because Street Fighter's tendency has always been to give their characters a Mr.-Olympia-in-martial-arts-gear sort of look, but because his arms are outstretched. The martial arts images I referenced for this pose all had a similar look, minus the Mr. Olympia models.

I don't like the lighting in the arena and it's a bit off in spots on the Scorpion sprite. I may have just avoided shading too much because I didn't want to lose anymore detail than creating a sprite-sized version of an MK9 character would involve. As much as I struggled with Ryu, I had a hell of time with Scorpion's wrist guards. I think my biggest gripe is the lighting on his back leg. It should definitely be a lot darker than that. FPKs tend to cause me to rush certain aspects of an image and lighting/shading is definitely at least partly sacrificed in favor of just getting as close to a finished product as I can get submitted. I uploaded the wrong version of the image, too. This one's missing the chain being held between both hands and the chain around Ryu's neck. All in all, it is what I consider to be my best work and definitely how I wanted to leave the industry having succeeded in what I set out to do... Or, so I thought.

I do wonder if we're able to submit corrected/updated versions of an image so that we don't clog the Kreations database with different variations of the same image.
